MAX POWERZ CRITIQUE OF GODBEAST's CUSTOMS

This is a PM I basically woke up to this morning! Not a way to start the day.

THIS WAS MAX POWERZ PM TO ME THIS MORNING.

Oh Btw, i figured out how to do some sick joint for a micro AF. So if i actually make it, beware! Youll have some competition on this next contest. Dont take it to offence but I though you picked a lame pose to do and if I were a judge I wouldve picked the other guys thing. For a contest youve got to make it better than normal where you did articulate it and paint it but still. I hope you know what I mean. Honestly I was shocked you won with that. I hope to see your sculpt a new unique one for it. Cuz im telling you now, if this new joint actually works, your in for some serious competition. But first I have to get right the leg ball joints down.
What scares me is i couldnt find my thin brush and painted the two micro AFs with a brush thicker than the eyes and i managed to get thta thin black dot in. Luckily I found it but the paint sucks. What should I use as a sealer?
Oh btw if I submit one with this new joint, ill be sure to explain how to do it, Ive thought of two ways.

Ive got to find where you posted how to make molds so I can make a unique sculpt. Im thinking a flying farting kid&king muscle holding hands. That would be classic.  But that would be for my personal collection.

After that sh*t you think I am going to tell you what sealer to use? How to make molds? (If someone can locate anywhere I have posted info on "how to" please let me know so I can edit it out, I don't think I have, in any detail though) Plus, making a mold is not how to do an original sculpt! Ha! Ha! That is the most stupid comment I have ever heard! OF ALL THE NERVE!!!

I am a professional artist, I have a BS in Art Education from a major university, and I have taught visual art education for 7 years, so I have had many a face to face real art critique of my work and to be honest, yours pissed me off, it wasn't even constructive, and didn't even have real merit, cuz the sh*t you said was straight up subjective and not factual or craftmanship related. It was based solely on my character selection and my single articulation (which by the way, one of the judges realized that it takes a little more to hand make your articulation than to buy it). So I would appreciate it if next time you kept your critique to the boards rather than PM'ing me and pissing me off. I would much rather have everyone chime in and give me a real critique rather than you just expressing your private opinion of my "lame" character selection. That would be a real critique.

I am holding back the true critique I want to give you on your stuff, simply because it would be purely hate driven right now (and I have had all day to cool off too). God, I sound like Ironmask, in fact, I am relating to his whole hate concept more and more! Thanks Ironmask!

Here is my honest critique of your stuff from a different post, where you mentioned wanting one:

the Mirco AF's are only 50% done (if you didn't do the waist, legs, knees, etc...) So you have 3 points of articulation right now? Boy that is so much more than 1?

The paint jobs, well lets just say, if you didn't like me saying they were good, then maybe I should have said that they were out of the lines and the wash was, well, muddy/sloppy?

Your character selection............. well to be honest that is purely subjective and not for me to critique why you selected those 3? I personally don't like those 3, but, that is only my personal opinion and that would not be constructive for you.

Your photos? Well I lied in your post. They are too dark and the lighting is bad.

Ok there you go Max Powerz a true Veers critique, ok well maybe not 100% Veers, cuz I was still trying to be nice, because I think that if you got a real hard artistic critique, it would probably discourage you. Unlike your not to nice critique of my customs I entered in the contest.

By the way, due to Soran and Max, please nobody PM me asking me advice, questions about customizing, mold making, plastics, etc... Except for my friend Andrew!

I am getting 100% tired of punks talkin' sh*t about this and that and how they are gonna make some figures with plastics, sculpt some original figures, blah, blah, blah............. Then oh by the way, what do you use? How do I do it? What brand of this and what brand of that? On and on and on....................... FORGET IT!!! FIND OUT ON YOUR OWN!!! SPEND YOUR MONEY FINDING OUT LIKE I DID!!! EXPERIMENT LIKE I DID!!! JERKS!!!

PS. By the way, I have been in a 3 month bad mood lately and several people have been pissing me off recently, so you are not the first, actually Soran was first you are second! Ridureyu, I am not sure why you bring the sarcasm. I am not going to prove myself to you with that kind of statement. I believe you to be a nice person, so I think maybe you should reflect on your statement and think a little about my age, and information I have stated before in this forum. Alex is probably the most right, however, I am seriously pissed off and considering just blowing and doing customs for myself and the people that already know how to contact me, via ebay, my email and my web site.

Yeah man, don't leave. Your customs rule! I love em. As soon as I get out of the dog house, I plan on buying more, especially if you have more variety now. As far as the PM, I think you are reading into it too deeply. It sounded more like a friendly competition, or bet not in so many words. He could of rephrased it, but I honestly did not take Max's PM as anything to get uber pissed about (I usually don't say uber, I think I got it from another thread). Anyways, I have done business with both parties involved, and to be perfectly honest, I think you both are great guys, I am not taking a side on this matter, but hope it comes to a speedy resolution. I don't think this is anything to take a vacation from the boards over. If you need to cool off, talk to the ones that you consider to be friends, I hope I am one fo them, because I think highly of you.

I have dealt with Max Powerz with deals. I have had nothing but great experiences with him and everyone on the boards. Not one bad trade or sale or anything, however, I find some of his comments super ultra offensive to my work and I felt the extreme need to air it out (right or wrong). This statement in particular pissed me off big time:

Jason, Johnny, Alex, I consider you 3 intelligent people with some empathy. Put yourself in my shoes, however, granted you might not or probably would not have posted this PM (I am probably going to regret it).

Tell me again how I am supposed to take this kind of sh*t? Oh yeah, as just someone talkin' sh*t off the top of their head. That is getting hard to do 2 times in one week! Again, he straight up insulted my stuff? How could anyone not be offended? My god, it is my work! It is not like I asked him his opinion (like he did with his posts of customs). He wasn't a judge last time I checked (well maybe, cuz I don't know the judges besides Johnny) thank god, cuz sorry, but, he would suck as a judge.

Yeah, I think that Max Power's comments were rather uncalled for. He may have not meant any harm by them but they came off rather harsh and cocky. I must agree with Marty on this one. But I mean if Max thinks he has something special and he can mold and create these figs...I'd say go for it. Then he would truly have something to brag about. I have not actually casted any of my molds yet, but let me tell you if you think you can master all this stuff in no time think again. I have taken several ceramics and catsing courses, and you can't learn this stuff over night. Especially without someone around to teach you. Before Max made those comments (which should have been kept to himself in the first place) I think he should have researched the topic more in depth, because if you take an unexperienced person and mix him with this art, no good can come from it. Only a mess and possibly long term effects from chemicals. If he wants to dive right in though, go for it. You make a custom first, then you can start to critique Martys figures.

You can't please everyone all of the time. You do good work on your customs. don't let a few snide remarks push you away. You have good friends here who would miss you.

I think he may have been attempting to be funny, and attempting to have fun “talking smack”, but he failed miserably. He gave no REAL indication that he was joking.

Once again I don’t blame Godbeast for being pissed, he has every right to be upset.

You can’t blast someone for their creation (whether in jest or seriously), and then ask how they do it. UNLESS the two people are great friends, and I’d be willing to bet Godbeast and Max aren’t really good friends. They’re only acquaintances from the board.

I’ll be anxious to hear Max’s response.

Personally, I don't think PM's should be made public. Having said that, I have a few observations. Max's post didn't seem that bad. It was definately brash and cocky. The criticism was also simply subjective and not a proper critique. I agree with Marty, that trash talking is probably not the best approach to take before asking for someone's help or knowledge on making custom figures. So, if I was Marty, I wouldn't want to be giving any info on making custom figures, either.

I don't think this is worth taking a vacation from the board. Marty is a very good guy. He is friendly, laid back and fun to talk to. He has taken plenty of time to answer a ton of questions that I have peppered him about Battle Beasts in general and his custom work. I also love the custom Battle Beasts that he made for me. Max is also a valued member of this board and is a good guy. I don't think this situation is so major that it should cause a member to take a vacation from the board.

Personally, Godbeast, I thought it was an ABSOLUTE TRAVESTY that you won. I mean, come on... with that figure, and only one point of articulation?! What a joke! But, despite the fact that I say I think it's garbage, I would really like to know how you made it because I'm secretly in great admiration of it.

You just have to know how to interpret these things...

Anyway, I know what you mean... I get criticism of my site every once in a while, too. Sometimes it is helpful and constructive, but sometimes it's just statements like, "I don't like this site design as much as your old one", or "The Fox and Tortle Show wasn't as good as it is usually". My response is always, "Okay, thanks for the input! I'll keep that in mind!" but what I'm really thinking is...

"You assume that I'm doing this site (and the Fox and Tortle Show) for other people. I do the site because I WANT to, not because I think people will like it. If nobody came to the site, it would be exactly the same because I'm doing this to express myself. If you don't like this Fox and Tortle Show episode, that's fine, but there's a REASON why certain aspects of the episode were necessary... for example, to set up future episodes. To make every episode the same shoot-em-up gorefest would make it into a formula show, like 90% of all TV, Internet, and movie garbage. I'm constantly seeking to expand the site and the show into new and interesting areas, and to move it forward. So, if I heeded your criticism, my site would basically become cliched, stale crap because I would be tailoring it for other people. Thank you, drive through."

But if I replied with that, I would be an a-hole... and I'm not Veers, so I take the diplomatic route.

I think that would probably upset you a little bit more, and make it a little more difficult to be diplomatic. But I can never be diplomatic so it’s hard for me to say with any degree of accuracy.

Ah! True dat. I forgot about that part. Well, I guess my response would depend on the media the person is "offering" the criticism...

If the critic sent me a PM or e-mail, I would simply delete it without responding. A statement like that is not worthy of a response. If he truly thinks he can do better, he can go through the effort of learning HTML, ASP, and Photoshop himself.

If the critic posted it in the forums, I'd respond with my non-diplomatic response above. Then, I would conclude the statement with "Oh, and one more thing... eff you and your family too. Please never come to my site again."

Many of these sentiments reflect those of Godbeast in his case, so I completely understand his viewpoint.

Look, I admire your work. I find it truely beautiful. Really, I do. I want to eventually buy one of them (i cant go off spending 15 for one guy right now). But, I was truely disapointed that you won with that. I know YOU can do SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!! And You know what? I wish that people would rip my stuff a new a-hole. Seriously! I however cant for your stuff because its perfect. I just was VERY disapointed that you chose THAT mold for a creative contest when you tend to do wayyyyyy cooler molds. I know you have a degree in arts, we were discussing it threw pms. And I know people are sensitive when they hear critic about art, but you know what, You KNOW your stuff sells. RIGHT? That alone should tell you that its good. I was just saying HEY YOU CAN DO BETTER and thats because its YOU and I've seen your previous works. Even though I am apoligizing, I need to thank you though. Your the only one with the balls to say whats wrong with my stuff. I love the general friendliness here, but sometimes it gets too friendly and when I ask for a critic, all I get is "thats good" or no comment. I wish peopel would say THATS GOOD BECAUSE.... I was In the wrong for not saying why I thought you shouldnt have done that for the contest. It does look cool, but for the contest I felt you wouldnt hold yourself back. You would "raise the bar," so to speak. I felt you lowered it for the most part. Yea you did paint the face and the circle. Yea you made the head move. Yes IT DOES LOOK GOOD. But I was expecting more from you. Im sorry to come of as a unit, a jerk, an a-hole, etc.... and didnt mean to come off that way. I am saying, for this next contest I have thought up TWO NEW TYPES OF JOINTS. It would give the figure super articulation if it actually works. I need to go out and buy the stuff and put it into practice. You yourself said 99% of the contest was based on articulation. I am saying If I get that to work, YOU WILL HAVE SOME SERIOUS COMPETITION. Cuz you know what? I dont know how your going to take this but since you have soooo much talent, I look forward to your stuff In a competition so that I could modivate myself to do something amazing. Even if yours ranks a billion points higher than mine. You are modivating me to raise my bar for the next one, and the next one. SO that one day I COULD DO something as amazing as yours. I dont want to suck up like that but thats the truth. That is also why I may have been so harsh in what I was saying because I think highly of your work and was disapointed that you chose what you did. I didnt mean it as, Im better than you na na na na na na. I was just in shock. I am looking forward to seeing a new mold from you, even a custom sculpt. It makes me feel good to see something new of yours and it makes me want to go for that as well.

Johnny was right in leaving this post. Now I am only pissed with less than 1% of the board members. I totally over reacted. You and I are cool. I am glad I posted this now so that every knows where we both were coming from.

I sent Johnny an email before I even read this post of yours and here was a part of it:

I took 10 of the muscles (I already had) and added another 16 extras I had (all colored) and I am going to mail them to Thunderhead (Chuck Smalling). It took a lot of balls to be the only other contestant and to submit what he did ( let me clarify.......that he sent 2 customs, bought the stickfa, paid shipping to Johnny, and he doesn't get them back). I hated for him to go away empty handed, so I personally am giving him a 26 Muscle runner up prize!

I also think that people didn't just want a new figure or something cool from me. I think their expectations for me to blow them away with a custom made 100% from scratch was what everyone wanted.

I was actually lucky to get a mold made, 2 done in one week, and mailed in time. I feel in this case, rather than people judging the work for what the work is, they automatically set a way higher standard for me alone since I am "thegodbeast." Fair or not, I guess that will have to be my reality.

I hope this doesn't sound arrogant, however, I feel that Tortle's comment here and Max Powerz' sincere comment here both say this. Fair or not, I guess that is something I will half to accept.

Max I am truly sorry I took your comments the wrong way, nun the less, it made me feel bad.

Sorry about the whole "crapping their pants thing" I edited to your custom posts. I was really mad last night, especially after festerring all day. Are you sure you want me to be totally honest with your work from now on? I can, it just isn't in my nature to be so brutally honest with people I don't know real well. Believe it or not, I really am an easy going nice guy.

Oh god, Thats great!!!!!!! You made me burst out laughing!!!! Honestly its the darkness that does that to them which I cant help. The camera does everything wayyy too dark and photoshop can only do so much to brighten it.

But, I'm not Veers just as Nate said and when I first came here, I was like that and I guess I just dont have that aura to say certain things like he does. I am replying again so quickly because there are things I forgot to address.

I completely understand that your pissed once again, but I didnt mean it that way. Once again I am sorry I came off rather harsh and cocky but I didnt mean it that way. I didnt mean oh what you do is easy and I can learn it in an hour. NO, I know it takes lots of time and devotion to complete one figure, I know that. Im not saying, oh Im going to cast off my own and it will be better than yours. I will be surprised if my first 100 castings will come halfway near yours. Its all been a misunderstanding and next time, ill be more carefull on what and how I say it. Because certain parts were implyed which I didnt mean to be implyed because I wasnt even thinking of them.

I dont want you to take a hiatus for afew days, nor to be even the slightist bit PO'ed about it. I was just disapointed you chose who you did for the contest.

I have great admiration of your work, I envy your abilities and your knowledge on molding. I didnt mean to say your mold sucks. I just meant to say, awww I thought you were going to do something REAL special for the contest.

Also, why did I not enter the contest? Well, I was done with one wednesday or thursday night, the first night I had free because of me moving back home, and all the exams I needed to study for. But still I could have sent in same day or next day shipping, right? Yea but That would have cost me a fortune. You probably still would have won regardless. I am not saying I dont need to touch up my figures, I know I have to. And that comes with practice. I have done leg joints before on my first one with a bs joint, but that was my first and I didnt have a drill on hand. Imagine how bad taht came out? That first one I would have to say is by far the best paint job but I know that will not come out on a camera because he is sooo dark. But these are just all excuses to you and to everyone else. I will be entering the next contest and even If I get a flat "0" and you recieve a billion points, THATS OK with me. Im learning and I can get a comparison.

I guess its also I wouldnt want to be compared with the bridge mode custom. Yea some peopel think its a cool mold, I personally like the mold, but for a custom contest? Thats what I something I was trying to say. Im very bad at articulating my thoughts and ideas and apologizing for that but its no excuse. I shouldnt have said what I said how I said it. Nor should I have compared yours to mine like that. I meant for it to be a light read and not a slap in the face, so Im sorry. Sometimes you dont see how something is going to be read and you forget taht at times. What and how I said it was wrong, and sorry to dis your work. I really find it absolutely amazing, I was just disapointed in what you sent.
