I went to check out GIMP for Mac, but I don't think it is too easy to install.

I also don't want to jeopardize baby pictures, for this thing.

I have GIMP on my Macbook. It was just as easy to install as any other downloaded app. I'm running Leopard with X11 (a requisite install for GIMP) already pre-installed, so IIRC, it was just a little drag and drop action with the .dmg installer.

If you're running Tiger, X11 may not be installed, but is located on your install disc that comes with a Mac. After X11 installation make sure you update it with the Mac Update tool. I think that's the only extra hoop Mac users need to jump through.

here's the download link, http://darwingimp.so...t/download.html

I don't know what the above meant. So I kept looking. Has anyone ever heard of Pixelmator?

It seems ok to me, but I'd love to hear any other thoughts.

And is there any good free (or cheap) web design software out there?

Notepad is an effective web design tool for basic html editing. You just have to know how to code HTML, and it's easy enough that you can learn it out of a book. I did.

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

Notepad is a standard text editing/word processing program that comes with Windows. I'm not sure what the Mac equivalent would be, but I assume there is one. One uses Notepad for writing and saving HTML files.

I've created all my Web sites writing basic HTML, JavaScript, and CSS into Notepad. All of these "languages" are pretty simple and straightforward. Here are the main resources I've used over the years:

http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp

http://www.quackit.com/

Of course, my Web sites are extremely basic, but for what I need/want, they get the job done. Depending on what you want to accomplish, you may need more resources and knowledge.

Veers, the notepad equivalent on a Mac is TextEdit.app, conveniently located under applications.

First though, if you don't already have this link bookmarked, you may want to do so: http://softwaredl.nw...g/Software.html

Smultron & Taco HTML are 2 text editors this page recommends, particularly the former. I've never used either, but in general, you want a text editor that has more than a basic, featureless text editor. Also, in addition to HTML, CSS is the best way to design webpages. HTML is good for the basic layout, but CSS should be used for designing the page and handling more advance layout.

For Windows users using notepad, try Notepad++: http://notepad-plus....net/uk/site.htm
It has automatic text coloring, auto-tag completion and auto-indenting for HTML, as well as a lot of other coding style features for other languages built in.

<_< Wow. I am overwhelmed, but thank you so much!

Soupie, I love the layout of your sites. I really want a clean, simple but academic look. I'm hoping I can do it.

If anyone has any suggestions on things I should read, then please post the links. I am an open book at this point.
