On our little board here we often say how people disappear after they finish their flesh set. Sure some people move on to Kin., Rom., and Gen 2 but for the most part people feel there collection is complete with a flesh set.

So my question is, “Are MUSCLE collector’s doomed to burnout from the beginning?”

With other hobbies or toy lines there are many paths to take. For instance, let’s take a look at Star Wars. There is vintage and new, carded and non-carded, prototypes, production art, non-toy items (i.e., soap, cereal, etc.), props, replicas, etc. Basically once you finish one area it is very easy to move on to another area of Star Wars. This is true with other toy lines too. GI Joe, He-Man, Lego, Playmobil, and many other large lines of toys.

Take a look at other hobbies too.

Sports – Cards, programs, give-away's, posters, endorsement items, etc.
Stamps – Domestic, foreign, sheets, singles, etc.
Coins – Domestic, foreign, material, denomination, etc.

With MUSCLE it is much more difficult to branch out. Especially if you only consider US MUSCLE items.

So again, “Are MUSCLE collector’s doomed to burnout from the beginning?”

It depends on the person. If you like the mystery and the "new info" on kin. freaks you out, then yes. You will burn out. If you are obsessed with it and move on to the imported items, you will be on it forever. Have you seen all the items that are related? I want a rice bowl set :notme:

I think it's inevitable. If a collector limits himself only to the vintage American MUSCLE line, he will eventually get burnt out because the line is so finite. But then again, to use one of your examples, the same thing would happen to a person who limited himself to only collecting vintage Star Wars figures. There are only 96 figures and a few dozen playsets and vehicles. Eventually, he would get everything and lose interest.

I remained interested in MUSCLEs only because I started exploring other aspects of the hobby: colored figures, Kinkeshi, Romandos, and Ultimate Muscle. Many of the original old-schoolers who didn't expand into other areas are gone, like Darrin and Patrick Gresham.

So, yes... if you limit yourself to just collecting a flesh set, you'll lose interest quickly.

Nothing's technically a guarenteed burn out....

I mean, when a toy line is over, and ou have absolutely everything, maybe. But we all know no one can't have every single toy there is.

I mean, if the toys aren't in stores, half the fun (or frustraition) is looking for them online or something. so, if you have all of the MUSCLE and that's all of the MUSCLE/Kinnikuman/Ultimate Muscle/Ramenman universe you care about, you will burn out. I mean, I am really interrested in any G1 or G2 Japanese stuff, and my coillection is small (consists of 21 MUSCLES, UM 1-4 and most of the CCG figures) so I'm hungry for anything Kinnikuman related... even if it's just going down and finding a place that actually serves Gyu-don!

I'm going to agree with Max and Tortle here. it depens on the person. frankly, without UM/ Kinnikuman I could care less about these. The idea that it stems from an obscure Japanese cartoon show really sold me, and that's the reason I am here.

The thing is, I haven't collected that much besides G1, and I still enjoy it- even if I haven't gotten any new figures in a long while.

I feel like it is more likely a burnout hobby than not. Once you've collected them all, there's really nothing more to the hobby. Unless you play with them, that is. Or read about them, or write about them, make sites about them, film movies using them, etc.
There are collectors, and there are MUSCLE heads.

For a collector, it really depends how they approach collecting. A completist will never burn out, because I don't think it's possible to find and obtain every figure in every possible color, in one lifetime. However, if you just want the flesh set, you're done after a relatively short time.

Ridureyu, you took the words right out of my mouth. I haven't branched out from G1 originals for the most part and I'm fine. My appetite isn't quite as voracious now, but I'm still buying whenever I can afford it. I've always collected things for quantity, even as a kid.

There are collectors, and there are MUSCLE heads.

This sums it up best for me. I am a man obbsessed with M.U.S.C.L.E./Kinnikuman, and no matter how many figs I have (and I could always use more) burning out is not an option. To me, it is not about collecting them to complete a set. There will never be a sense of completion to my collection as long as there are M.U.S.C.L.E.s or Kinnikuman figures out there that I do not own. I literally want them ALL.
M.U.S.C.L.E. is a part of my every day life, has been since I was 5 years old, and will continue to be until I am a crotchety old man with a shizznitload of little guys from a long forgotten past.

I think if you just collect the American M.U.S.C.L.E. toyline then I think you run a greater risk of "burnout" than a Kinnikuman collector. The American M.U.S.C.L.E. toyline ran for a short time and is pretty limited. Once you complete your collection there is a good chance that the person would lose some interest. Of course, that doesn't go for everyone. But, I think if you are more of a Kinniku-freak like me rather than being a M.U.S.C.L.E. head then you have lower risk of suffereing a "burnout." I love the G1 and G2 manga, anime, Romandos, G2 toys and G1 japanese toys so I definately am not worried about suffering from any type of "burnout" any time soon.

I am a muscle head true and true. Kinnikuman related items are the only toys i collect. I have to admit I did get a little burnt out once my fleshy set was done, but it is fun trying to get as many colors as possible, and Romando opened up a whole new door to kinnikuman collecting, same goes for kinkeshi, although many are too expensive for my taste so I doubt I will ever get all of them bastitchs. I suggest branching out to anybody getting bored though, I love the comics, i love the Romando, and I love God beasts customs, infact Godbeast has kept muscle collecting alive for me, I can not wait until my order gets in, I will have over a dozen CLAW variations how is that for effing sweet. I have 7 muscle claws, two customs already and 6 more sweet ones coming in, I have a ton of custom photos for a customs page on my site, but I am waiting for that order first to complete it. Let me say this, you guys are in for a treat. Godbeasts two toned tortles are sweet, I have two of them and want more. Ok, thats enough kissing Godbeasts arse for now, but I personally think he deserves it.

I think that if a colector limits themselves to only a complete flesh set, then yes, they will burn out after it is achieved.

However, if you are like me and are going for a complete colored set of every M.U.S.C.L.E., then you will never burn out because you will never get them all! Haha! ^_^

I still have yet to get 1 figure in every color, like everyone else!

Plus I have an undying interest in Super Rares.

Pretty interesting responses.

Here’s my take. If you are just interested in MUSCLE, then you are likely to burnout. There’s just not enough stuff to keep you interested. Even if you try and get one figure in every color, or something like that, it appears that it is an unobtainable goal (from what we currently know). I’m still going for an unobtainable goal, like arforbes, and it is keeping me very interested. But I don’t think most people want to go down that road.

However if you get interested in Kinkeshi, then your collector options are plentiful.

Plus I want some Super Rare answers. ^_^

well, i think that anyone that collects these little pink buggers has some issues in the first place!
Heck, I've seen some collectors get so whacked out that they make crazy web sites totaly dedicated to muscles!! Can you believe it??? There's even a guy who makes this imaginary TV show staring two well know members of the G1 lineup. Have you ever heard of anything so.........bizarre?? ^_^

I'm starting to worry about my OWN sanity lately!

After I completed a flesh set, I almost called it quits. That is until I started collecting UM and kineshi. Painting all of the extra G2's I have always keeps me very intrested in the toys. So what I'm saying is if you branch out and collect kinnikuman/ UM related stuff, you probably won't get burnt out too quickly. Unless you go broke. B) I'm actually pondering on starting a colored set after Christmas.
I would buy more actually, but muscle isn't the only thing I collect, I also collect, spawn, homies, and occasionally gundam models. I think intrests in other things has probably helped me to keep my intrest in kinnikuman/muscle/UM.

I'm in agreement with pretty much everything that's been said here.
It realy depends on why you collect the guys. Me, I just want my fave's because I like them. Since I don't usualy get burned out on what I like, then I'll be fine.
For me there's no real limit to my enjoyment of MUSCLEs. B)

i have often thought how much fun it would be to come up with a muscle related RPG board game type of game. You can choose characters from bank of your own figures and so each game would be different depending who you chose and you could have cards to determine things that could happen and combat with dice and all and the characters could even level up. GW came up with blood bowl so how hard could it be to base one around intergalactic wrestling, with no official game we could pretty much make up our own way of distributing things like magic power and special weapons and so on. What if we set up a committe to thrash out the rules we can all make suggestions to come up with something pretty good im sure and thus expand the hobby to a new level. What do you guys think? and i dont think the hobby will burn out for those of us who branch out beyond the american line and i sure would like to get my hands on godbeasts super-rare customs.

I created a General Use Minature System once that worked very well with figures like MUSCLES.

I'll upload them as they were on my website... That one dissappeared some time ago, though. I never did get to test the larger figures(3-7") or giants(8-12+), nor the Magic.

For the current rules, though, they're not too bad. Any questions, just ask.

Edit: forgot to upload. D'ho!

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

Well, I guess you bring your MUSCLES, and they bring their Orcs, Goblins, Robots or Space Marines.

When I wrote the small critters for GUMS, MageKnight had JUST come out, and a few people had 'em... and some people didn't care for the rules in themself. I wanted a minature system that was like GURPS and let you use any minature(like one of Steve Jackson's cancil'd games). Thus, I made the General Use Minature System to incorporate all those things, and other Action Figure type things.

Have fun, and don't forget to pick up a Zbots vehicle or two.

Also, any playtest data you want to take down(Vehicles too powerful, etc) please do-- the rules only got light testing of mabe ten or twelve plays.

Guys for me i believe the underlying factor here is

"PASSION" and not 'burnout"

Hell when i was a kid , playing with my original 30 figures , growing up in the outback at the arse end of the world , you would think i'd get brunt out from playing with them? NAH AH

if you have a passion for them as i do burnout is never an option.

Even though this is an old topic, i'd like to throw an opinion or two on this topic. first off, I personally get as much or more out of collecting information as I do from the accumulation of little rubber dudes. To me, its like owning 100s of cds, but knowing about the bands, the record labels, the history is what makes a collector a collector, and not just a selective packrat :) My other thought on this topic is that in the case of muscles and kinniku, its not just about what you win in auctions, or learn about the charachters, but about being an active contributer to the collective..... A realization I've just recently come to. As a community, we all feed off of each others interests, and all press onward as a result. B)
