Reason for taking down Monster Collecting
#1
Posted 26 March 2012 - 04:09 AM
website and the reason I took it down... This is a copy
of the message that I posted in the Junkyard thread that
may have not been seen by some collectors.
"
I think Howard's point pretty much sums it up:
"Its all a bit obvious really. its just a shame collecting
has come to all this I reckon. I know not everyone is perfect
and at times collectors tread on others feet and there are
obstructions to people getting what they want but thats just
the real world. Sure people lose auctions, or back out of
deals but there are ways and means of at least being a decent
person and not causing problems through their own hoarding
or self opinion. Theres too much of this lately unfortunately"
I have not sought after many figures within this past year
and a half. But unfortunately on a number of occasions I have
been forced to deal with one collector because they are set
on outbidding me even when they own the figures already.
The final straw came when they decided to pouch a trade I had
with another collector. Obviously 'shit happens' but it becomes
increasingly frustrating when the person messages me wondering
why I took their photographs down from the website and then the
very next day screws me over again. We can't have our cake and
eat it can we?!
At the time of removing the website I really felt that it
was the cause of the 'greed' and 'deceit' I had witnessed.
It saddens me but I completely understand the comment about
'throwing in the towel'. I realize that the website had
become bigger than one man (myself) and if anything belongs
to all of us. I would consider someone taking over the
updating of the website but have yet to have anyone come
forward with this request...
Whoever does it perhaps they should be better adaptive to not
taking things personally and able to remain impartial for the future
of MIMP data collection.

Either way, Monster Collecting lives on with me, albeit in a very low tech way!

Ever since i discovered Darryl's site i've always worked from these print offs to monitor my collection. It's been a Godsend in making sure i know where i am with my matchbox figures in particular.
So yeah, cheers for the work you put in, Darryl.

You need to realize that for every ONE person who is an ass about collecting there are dozens and dozens who appreciated what you did for what it was.
I remember showing my nephews your site and having them be in awe while i told them to each pick any monster they wanted and we'd track it down for them as a reward for A's on their report cards.
In the end it's just little rubber toys. It didn't make that one guy a jerk, he was already that person. But you need to make sure it doesn't change you and make you bitter. It's just toys. Have fun with them or just walk away.

At the end of the day I don't bid on an auction if I know the winning bidder is a trading friend, at times I've put in bids for other collectors who for some reason can't bid, that has outbid people I know, but it rarely happens, private bids thats a bit impossible though:-D

These figures will only rise in popularity as our generation ages, don't know why you would hop ship now.

From past experience here, I've been in trades and the guys always say that figure is put aside for you until the trade is all sorted etc. I'm pretty sure this is the same collector who won the neon green behemoth on ebay last week that sold for £183...
At times it can get damn annoying - eg that guy who wins all the bad eggs, skeleton dinosaurs and horrors n heroes figures one ebay annoys me no end. But it doesnt stop me collecting anyway:) So I reckon Darryl will come back at some point.
I definitely agree with you though, keep in the game, don't let the scum get under your skin so much. Prices are going through the roof again and theres always going to be another person coming along with a bottomless pocket who'll trample over anyone to get figures they need. Just man through it and I'm sure sooner or later those collectors who do the underhand deals and so on will find people won't trade with them maybe. Who knows.

If only that was the case, but it seems most are more than willing to deal with people who have screwed other collectors over.

Here's the thing. Why not just be a little more patient and wait to pick up the figure later from another source?
Just like the douchebag who pulls the same crap with BEB (is it the same person?). I don't think many people deal with him to get their BEBs.

Strontium - you're right, I know a few people who deal with said BEB guy and say hes a good trader, and so on. I don't deal with him (did poke to see if he would for things I know he collects but he'd give bullshit answers like no they aren't high on my priorities list), nor the guy who I think this whole matter is about. Not for a long time anyway after I had some problems of figures that were put aside getting traded off constantly and then reappearing as if by magic later but being shown to other collectors as 'available'.
Would be nice to see some peoples opinions other than you, 1313, and the people who've posted. To their views on if they've been screwed over by anyone, or such or felt like they've ever got in the way of a potential trade or such and if so how they've responded to it. I know that those who have annoyed others in the past have kept rather quiet on this whole topic

I'm curious about who these unscrupulous traders / collectors are. As a newbie collector I go into most trades / purchases on good faith and am still getting my head around rarities and pricing. Monster Collecting was a great resource, and it's a shame that it's down.
Don't trade with me,
I'm a jerk.

Bad + MIMP = Brojo (based on my experience)
But don't take the site down. That's dumb. You may not want to continue running the site, or updating the site, but I'm sure more than just the people that posted here found it useful. Now you're being a shitty MIMP person to those people by taking down the site. Don't let the figures get in the way of enjoying MIMP. I love MUSCLE, but I'm effing sick of the actual figures.
I have way more fun with the UofM website and all the things associated with that. The figures are just stuff, but you can make your website into whatever you want. So far, it sounds like your website does a lot of good. Taking it down seems like it does a lot of bad.

I assume the problem is Brojo.

I think your wrong, yeah he can be annoying at times but I dont think screwing people over is his style. In fact when I traded with him he insisted he sent first.
