May 2-4 long weekend is the biggest yard sale weekend of the entire year in these parts. So we originally set out for a nearby small town to visit their annual outdoor yard sale/flea market thing.

I got this sweet, sweet cabinet for the low, low price of my dignity.

Attached File  new case.jpg   55.33K   30 downloads

Other than that, it was a pretty big bust. (Especially considering the drive.) My wife then had a GENIUS idea to head to this massive outdoor/indoor flea market closer to Toronto, (and thus we've never been.)

My kid, as kids are expected to do, only wanted to see toys. There was this dude selling all kinds of cheap shit like knock off perfume, home hardware, etc. But along his back wall was a massive collection of packaged figures. Spawn, Toy Biz Marvel, etc. So I took my kid back to look around, and then I spotted these absolute BEAUTIES.

Attached File  Star Attack1.jpg   89.94K   42 downloads

Attached File  Star Attack2.jpg   88.98K   44 downloads

Attached File  Star Attack3.jpg   102.13K   44 downloads

STAR ATTACK.

I've never seen these before, and nor do I expect to again. The packages were rough, and he had them pretty much hidden from view entirely. (I doubt they were big sellers.)

The vehicles are great, the figures are great, and most importantly the price was right! ($10 for all three sets total.)

Attached File  Star Attack4.png   840.14K   35 downloads
The "Space Spider" is the worst of the bunch in terms of looking like ass and not working properly.

Attached File  Star Attack5.png   995.17K   28 downloads

The "Space Scorpion" is arguably the best one. It has all kinds of little action features, and very good attention to detail.

Attached File  Star Attack6.png   410.67K   35 downloads

The "Space Beetle" is very plain in every respect, but it looks damn good. It appears to be more of a reconnaissance vehicle than a combat type.

Attached File  Star Attack7.png   1.04MB   29 downloads

The Spider and Scorpion came with 1 additional smaller vehicle, but the Beetle came with FOUR additional vehicles. Each set comes with enough minfigures to pilot each vehicle, (including the shining star of the set.)

AND FINALLY:

I couldn't get a good enough picture of the damn things, but the minifigures are predator and xenomorph heads slapped onto generic space man bodies. Absolutely brilliant!!

The Space Jockey, a piece of movie scenery I have wanted for thirty years.

SpaceJockey.png

Which makes for an interesting crossover with the Angry Birds.

SpaceJockey-AngryBirds.png

Anyway, new on the demon front is Asmodeus, Demon Prince of Lust.  See how hot he is, baby?

Asmodeus.png

He is known by many names: Asmodeus, Asmodai, Hasmodai, Asmodei... that's like saying Robert, Rob, Bob, Bobby, Robby, and Roberto.

Asmodeus-Hellfire.png

Baphomet came from a typo for Mahomet.  The goat demon and everything is about a hundred years old or so.

Baphomet_1.png

This figure comes with an alternate head - it's technically a Baphomet priestess (there is also a more traditional Baphomet in the line, too)

Baphomet-Priestess.png

And finally, because I am a lunatic goofball:

Baphomet-AngryBirds.png

ANGRY BIRDS:  GATEWAY TO SATANISM?!?!?!?!?!

-The main bird is Red, the color of the devil!
-The yellow bird looks like a horn... Of Satan?
-The white bird lays eggs, exposing children to explicit sexuality!
-The black bird trains children into becoming suicide bombers as terrorist propaganda.
-Pigs are inherently unclean animals. Glorifying then is sinful!
-Green pigs? Green ham? Dr. Seuss was a known communist and environmentalist (and thus a new-after). Pure indoctrination!
-Demolishing perfectly good buildings is wickedness.
-Sometimes one of the pigs dresses as Santa Claus. Santa Claus is Satanic.
-Only demon-possessed birds can talk.
-Angry Birds is from Norway or Denmark or one of those new age Satanist Viking countries.
-Angry Birds targets children, and anything that targets children is evil! JUST LIKE HE-MAN.

I suggest we begin a boycott!!!!!

Hey. Hey Draznar. You know what you just did with your Star Attack toy haul? I think you've just ID'd the octopus micro playset I've had for a few years now! It came with an AT-ST ripoff that looks a bit less fancy than the one in your picture, and I received it in a trade with an old LRG regular - perhaps Universal Ruler Supreme, miss you dude - who also had no idea what it is. I should send that your way sometime, see if it's compatible with those awesome Predator ripoffs too.

(And I promise to not muck things up this time around. ;) )

Also: How crazy is it that there was something out there you couldn't ID, that I did, (potentially), on accident?

Double awesome.

It's time to learn more about Japanese mythology!  Today, we have the Taimatsuru, Gashadokuro, and the Tale of Kiyohime & Anchin!

TAIMATSUMARU

Related to the Tengu, Taimatsumaru is a giant bird wrapped in demonic flames that really, really hates Buddha.  How much, you ask?  Although it's mostly known for attacking and interfering with monks, it even goes so far a to harrass Buddha himself!  Now, usually a flaming bird is treated as something positive, whether the Phoenix or the East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) Vermillion Bird.  Clearly, that ain't the case with this little guy.  Mind you, any more info is scarce, as he basically came entirely from Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro, written by Seiken Toriyama in 1784.

Yokai-Taimatsumaru.png

GASHADOKURO

One of the most horrifying and deadly of all Yokai, Gashadokuro is an aggregate ghost formed from hundreds of spirits.  The requirement for one is that they had to have died in misery - usually by starvation, although sometimes by plague, or soldiers left to rot in the fields, or otherwise dying with anger and hatred in their hearts.  I takes a hundred such deaths to create the Gashadokuro, a massive skeleton fifteen times the size of a human being (or larger!).  Despite their size, Gashadokuro can move absolutely silently, except for the rattling of their teeth (the "Gasha" in their name is an onomatopoeia for a rattling sound.  It's also found in "Gashapon").  Since they also have the power to turn invisible, often this (or a supernatural ringing in your ears) is your only warning before the giant skeleton grabs you and bites off your head, drinking your blood to satisfy its famine-hunger.  A Gashadokuro can't be killed, though it will eventually run out of energy and dissipate.  They can be warded off temporarily with Shinto charms, which gives you enough time to run - and perhaps if you flee, it will go after another victim and leave you alone.

Yokai-Gashadokuro.png

THE TALE OF KIYOHIME & ANCHIN

The tale of Kiyohime and Anchin is one of Japan's most beloved love stories.

Near the Dojo-ji temple, there once was a well-to-do family who would lodge monks on their pilgrimage, giving them a place to stay before they crossed the Hidaka river to the temple. One such monk, Anchin, was quite handsome, and the family's young daughter, Kiyohime, developed a crush on him. Anchin jokingly told her that, "Well, if you're good, I suppose I'll marry you someday."

Of course, Kiyohime took this seriously, and waited patienly over the years. Finally, she came of age, and Anchin's yearly visit... when the same as any other. He stayed the night with the family and then went on his way. Kiyohime got rather angry and chased him down to the shore, fuming about how he hadn't kept his promise.

When Anchin saw her and realized why she was angry, he said, "Uh... Anchin who? I don't know anybody named Anchin. WHo are you? I've never met you before! You must be talking about, um, some other really awesome monk named Anchin, and... uh... oh, look at the time! I've got to go! OH BUDDHA PLEASE SAVE ME!!!"

And wouldn't you know it, Buddha did rescue Anchin by knocking Kiyohime unconscious (there's a mental picture for you). Anchin quickly boarded a boat and began to cross the river.

BUT... Kiyohime woke up, and realized that he was escaping her. So she jumped into the river and swam after him. And, in fact, she got so angry that she turned into a fire-breathing snake monster! Which is something that happens, apparently, When women get angry, they turn into fire-breathing snake monsters. Don't blame me, this story is over a thousand years old.

Anchin saw the Kiyohime-monster swimming after him, and panicked to the boatman, who also saw her. Thus, they paddled faster than they had ever paddled before, and made it to shore. Once there, Anchin ran into the temple screaming, "Help me! There's this girl, and she likes me and I rejected her, so she got reallyangry and turned into a giant fire-breathing snake-monster (which is totally normal thing that happens all the time)!"

And the monks of the monastery said, "Well, that sounds like a perfectly normal sequence of events that happens all the time. Here, hide under our big iron bell so she won't find you."

So, they hid him under their gigantic iron bell. Kiyohime slithered into the monastery, breathing fire, and sniffed out Anchin's location. She wrapped her coils around the bell and breathed fire all over it, until it turned white-hot and Anchin died.

And thus, now that she had turned into a giant fire-breathing snake monster (happens all the time) and murdered the man she had been obsessively crushing on for over a decade, Kiyohime promptly plunged herself into the river and drowned.

And that's the whole story. Sometimes it is titled, "How a Monk of the Dojo-ji in the Province of Kii copied the Lotus Sutra and Brought Salvation to Serpents," which is not what happens in the story at all.

Each one of these bad boys for $1.25 CAD. (Cannot go wrong with that.)

Got mine too and it fell a few times trying to balance on this ledge and still looks perfect. I want to get another one just to throw at people.

The resin is seriously strong. Going to use it for other stuff in the near future as well.

And so, we have one of the expansions to Cthulhu Wars - the Great Old One (pack 1).  There are three assortments of them - packs with 5, 4, and 1 figure(s), respectively.  They're "neutral" monsters in-game, meaning that they are up for grabs if you want to awaken one... though it remains loyal until killed, at which point someone else can summon it.  These guys really mess with the rules, and add another layer of strategy to the game.  The pieces are all mono-colored gray, which hilariously is accurate for two of the monsters presented here.

ABHOTH - the cretor of all corruption and filth, who dwells in a cavern deep beneath the earth.  Abhoth spawns misshappen, irregular creatures - no two "children" are alike!.  First appeared in a Clark Ashton Smith story - and hilariously, he's actually colored gray!

CWGOO-Abhoth.png

CHAUGNAR FAUGN

Created by Frank Belknap Long, Chaugnar Faugn is one of the... lesser Great Old Ones.  He's an ancient monstrosity who bears passing resemblance to an elephant (and may be the source of all elephantine deities, thought he closer you look, the more you see that this is not an elephant at all), and is vampiric in nature, using the lamprey-like mouth at the end of his trunk to suck blood from his victims.  He physically resembles stone, and falls into a state of hibernation between feedings.  Thus, he can be easily mistaken for a stone idol (the coloration is right, haha!).  In the story in which he appears, Chaugnar Faugn is brought into a museum as an exhibit, and soon wreaks havoc.

CWGOO-ChaugnarFaugn.png

YIG

Yig, the Father of Serpents, first appeared in a story by Zealia Bishop (though Lovecraft co-wrote it).  He is exactly what the title says.  If you show kindness to snakes, Yig will be kind to you.  But if you don't, he will slaughter you and mutate your remains into snakes.

CWGOO-Yig.png

CTHUGHA

Cthugha is a being of fire, who appears as a massive ball of flame.  The coloration is insufficient on this figure for obvious reasons.  When August Derleth placed his stamp on the Cthulhu Mythos, he assigned elements to the Elder Gods.  Cthugha was invented to have a "fire" elemental.  And yes, Derleth's changes to the mythos are highly controversial, but even the people who hate him tend to use a lot of the groundwork he set down... just maybe not the elements bit.

CWGOO-Cthugha.png

MOTHER HYDRA - The consort to Dagon (he's in Set #20, who spawns the Deep Ones.  Only had a one-line mention in The Shadow Over Innsmouth, so it's hard to tell if she's meant to be a Great Old One, or just a big fish-monster.
