I found out about this topic from a more recent one. My first thought was back to when I worked in a sign factory. We used tons of the same metals and sizes, but once in a while we'd have some pieces that looked the same but had separate marking on them. To keep the "batches right" or to include a mix we reffered to the code on a certain part of the piece.
If the customer wanted a mixture of pieces we'd grab several "1292s" (making up an example here) and several "1238s". So I'm wondering when these toys were packaged to insure no doubles were packed they people on the line had 1 "a", 1 "b", 1 "c" bins etc.

I found four neon yellow Winged Panthers with no letter today.
thats an unusual find, and 4 of them no less!
