I myself will never 'burn out" Ive had muscles all my life. I want to collect anything that has to do with them. The B) in muscles stands for millions and thats how many I want! :)

The only time I will stop posting here is when I start my own site and possible message board. :)

Well I originally got into MUSCLES through Kinnikuman, in fact, when I first found out they had MUSCLES back in teh 80's my reaction was "What?? Really??" so basically my MUSLCE collection is spawned from my Kinnikuman fandom, but as far as collecting goes I always burn out from my collecting intrests, though it takes a LONG time, before MUSCLEs I was a avid Gundam Model fanatic, having over 40 models it ran for about 5-6 years. But a few weeks ago I got kinda burned out on collecting MUSCLEs, for the same reasons theyw ernt quite so popular, there just little plastic single colored figures. But I re-kindled my intrest by painting them, now my goal is to have a complete painted MUSCLE and UM figure collection, after that... then ill start collecting more Romandohs and other things. But at that point it may be a more of a light intrest, mixed inw ith other hobiees I have right now. Kinkeshi are okay, I may only collect em to get figures that werent in the MUSCLE line, also I really want to read the whole Kin manga series, and watch the anime, so I have a ways off before i get burnt out.

I saw my name so I decided to post hehe :D

The whole MUSCLE/Kinnikuman hobby is one of the most awesome hobby's I ever got myself into

I collected arcade machines, wrestling figures and other various toys. By far this is the most fun

for starters just getting and entire 233 american figures in any color was an adventure

then a full flesh set little easy but still fun none the less

Then the impossible every figure in every color thats dangerous my friend lol
fun but dangerous though I did pretty well (i think my #'s 1434 diffrent ones? its been a while)
If more peeps color hunted they're would be more peeps to trade with which would make it more fun

I guess the whole "impossible" factor stops people from trying

Then theres the extra american muscle stuff hunting the posters, ring, board game, 28 packs and some other stuff im forgeting

thens theres all the generation 2 toys games dvd's cards and Manga

lastly theres super rare hunting (though that can get pricy at times lol)

thats just the American side of this hobby!!!

then theres the Japanese crap Kinniku's, Romando's, UFO's, and some other stuff you can see in the Akia store and yahoo japan

also there's the Godbeast custom free-for-all ta boot

pretty much the only true measure of success of any hobby is how much you enjoy participating in it. (i like this quote im gonna use it as my new sign)

and frankly I love it

Muscles/Kinnikumen are Kinniku-Kool! lol

Ya Veers Im a little trouble maker glad ya didnt forget me lol :D

and Johnny thanks for the kind words

I missed Akia and collecting but when school bills are in the thousands, 2 weddings i have to attend, car insurance and lastly spending some of July in the hospital those are the time when the hobby and collecting has to be put on hold

but with collecting muscles and such they're are/were a lot of people that just gave up after a flesh set comes there way

thats something that can't be denied or ignored
well i guess you can ignore it if you want... and deny... but its still happens...lol

I guess we will really see in a year from now what newer Muscle heads are still waveing there Kinniku flags the same way they did when they first started

Posted 23 December 2004 - 03:51 AM

I guess you could say that for the most part, i am kind of burnt out. I completed my flesh set a couple years ago and then was heavily into putting together an awesome colored set of figs, i didnt want every single figure, but a few sculpts i aimed to get in every color. In fact, my inquiry almost two years ago of everyone on the board and email list as to whether they had certain colored claws kind of led to the discovery that no one had any single figure in every color, especially not the claw. But for a while i searched high and low for those colored figs, then when people discovered that certain colors of any particular sculpt were rarer than others (think magenta claw), and the price people were willing to pay for those figures went up proportionally, i kind of gave up. I figured even if i did find it on ebay before someone else i would inevitably be outbid. Since then I have stored my collection in a box, every once in a while thinking how cool it would be to make a huge plaque/frame/wall-hanging displaying my collection, and making a post here every now and again. I first got back into muscle my freshman year of college so ive been involved for about 5 years and still going, although not as hard. So, from my experience, i think that burnout in MUSCLE is a likely occurrence, but not inevitable.

burn out? i don't think so. but it may just be me and i'm just starting to add to the collection my big brother gave me. i still can't believe he did that. :D
anyway, for the traditional sense of the phrase, like any hobby i guess it can take it's toll...and for what you guys are discussing, i feel, if you're into it, after you complete the muscle collection, there's always the japanese stuff. i wanna collect them both myself. after all, it's the same thing, just from another country.

I was thinking about this thread the other day, and looking at it today initiated a few additional thoughts.

First, it’s amazing to see who is still here and who disappeared. I think it has answered my question. I think there are two types of MUSCLE collectors: (1) The Flash and (2) The Burn.

The Flash shows up for some time, posts everywhere, trumpets their love of MUSCLE, and then just disappears – never to be heard from again. Maybe the still collect, but in a hobby this small the community is a big part of it. Most likely they jumped to their new thing (cycling, painting, bottle caps, etc.)

The Burn might exhibit a few Flash characteristics, but they don’t disappear. They are continuously around the hobby, regardless of their “intensity.”

I’m curious what causes a Burn to extinguish? I feel like my frustration with the hobby is extinguishing my excitement and enjoyment. Is it just a dip in intensity or really a disinterest in the hobby?

I think for those of you collecting all the colors, the fact that you guys have bid up the prices on them so freaking high is weighing very heavy on whether or not you want to continue collecting all colors.
You have to decide if:
A. You are willing to spend money out the ass to get a few colors here and there...
and
B. If you aren't willing to pay out the nose, are you willing to be patient and wait for them to go down to reasonable prices...
and lastly
C. Will they even be available for me to acquire?

For myself, A. would be a point of contention, but C. would be the deal breaker. If I were putting all the effort into collecting them, as you guys are, and I could never complete my set, I would stop.

I've actually just discussed this with my wife on a couple occasions. Near the end of last year, when i had a dozen M.U.S.C.L.E.s and six Battle Beasts to my name, everything seemed so vast and unattainable. Then, only a few months later i'm at what is apparently recognized as a burnout point for both hobbies. 233 fleshies and 76 Battle Beasts. Fortunately, a couple other things happened along the way to keep me occupied.

Through this board, i discovered a vast world of LRGs that hold legitimate points of interest to me. Stacking six or seven new lines onto my hobby happened so quick that i barely even realized it. And of course along with that comes all the great people at this board with their collective knowledge and fierce dedication. Makes me feel like i'd just be bailing on something really amazing if i burned out now.

Then there's the artwork...several years ago i had a promising new career with that, that just kind of fell through. So other than just a little bit here and there, i had pretty much just slacked off on the drawing and given up. Through M.U.S.C.L.E. and Battle Beasts though, this board completely reignited my interest in art. Reimagining and capturing such a vast pool of characters through artwork has been as satisfying as getting the toys themselves.

Not to mention, i've already started branching out into the difficult and scary portions of the hobby. A Laser Beast here, a Romando there....that's gonna take me a good long time. :)

Wow... great resurrected topic, Veers! It's cool to see everyone's responses.

I agree with Johnny in that the prices of some colored MUSCLEs are so outrageous that it's probably a part of your burn-out, and that it's possible that collecting all the colors is an expectation that can't be fulfilled. And the amount of effort you have to put into it (scanning eBay auctions, trading with collectors, etc) must be insanely arduous.

So, there seems to be a few different burnouts here:

1) Flash, as Veers described above. This collector eventually stops collecting because he simply loses interest.
2) Burnout, in which a collector tries to get all the mass-produced items (like a full flesh set and the accessories), but doesn't go as far as trying to get the Super-Rares or rare colors. This collector stops collecting because he's collected what he considers to be a "complete" collection (i.e. a full flesh set) and is unwilling to go further to get the really expensive stuff (which he doesn't consider part of a complete collection anyway).
3) Atomic burnout, in which a collector tries to be a completist and get all the colors, Super-Rares, etc. This collector stops collecting because the high prices and relative unavailability of the items he's searching for is discouraging.

I think there are a few exceptions like me (my website keeps me interested), Alex (who is just crazy :)), etc. But I'd say 99% of collectors will fit into one of those three categories.

Haha! Agreed...over the years I have found myself simply interested in the figures though. I used to have all the items like the wrestling ring, the mega-match game, and belt all sealed in the box new. However, I now mainly collect the loose figures. It could be because of their availability and ease of coming across them. I am not one to hoard MOC sets or garbage cans either. When Toybliss sold all those mint sealed garbae can 10-packs years ago that everyone had a field day on, I bought a case and opened EVERY pack to get colors I needed, then I sold the display box and empty cans to someone here who was more interested in that sort of thing. I have like 1 of each 10-Pack, Flesh and Flesh/Colored and Colored, and a like two 4-packs with some cool figures in them, not even an all flesh 4-Pack yet. So yeah mainly into the figures alone, and the thing that interests me the most and keeps me going is finding new figures. It has always been that way for me even as a kid. I never new how many there were, I didn't have knowledge of the poster and when I found a new figure, rare or not, it always intrigued me to think are there really an infinite number of these guys? Now as an adult and observing the super rare phenomenon, it brings me back to my childhodd fantasy in a sense, that there are STILL figures I have never seen out there to be discovered. That's what holds my interest. :)

I don't think any hobby is a "guaranteed burnout." For instance, I used to collect Hot Wheels, and I never imagined I'd get tired of them...but now I've stopped. There are a couple of reasons for this. Some of it was due to bad attitudes of fellow collectors, but most of it was contempt toward Mattel. They kept releasing uglier and uglier cars, and started putting out three of four different colors of each car every year. It got to be too hard to keep up with all the color variations, never mind cars they promised only to replace with some fugly thing that shouldn't have made it past the drawing board.

Will I get burned out on M.U.S.C.L.E? It remains to be seen, but is unlikely at this point. Right now, I'm only after the U.S. M.U.S.C.L.E. in every known variation--I do have a borderline completist mentality--but it will take me a while to finish off even that. I don't have a whole lot of disposable income right now, and when I get a steadier supply, I intend to find and start heavily customizing a truck. So there's that angle. Plus, the M.U.S.C.L.E. line (as far as the U.S. was concerned) was only around for a few years, and no effort has been made to resurrect it. That leaves me with a finite ammount of items to look for, yet there's always the possibility of discovering new stuff down the road. And finally, it's a reminder of my childhood...the '80s were a hell of a time to be a kid!
