Yes they still were the major deciding factor. Only in the original Dragon Ball, power levels weren't paramount. The kienzan attack is lethal, but that's not going to work on anyone that has their guard up. The limits of Guldo's uncanny abilities are unknown. Yes, he would have defeated Gohan and Krillin with his shenanigans, but would that have worked on, say, Freeza? I highly doubt that. Guldo simply doesn't have that kind of firepower. Recoome, Burter, and Jeice, are roughly all equal in strength (as stated by Krillin and the manga infers they're in the range of 30-60000), but Vegeta simply wasn't strong enough to contend with any of them. He lost badly against Recoome, so the transitive property would dictate he'd meet the same fate against either Burter or Jeice at that time. Goku's naivety was what allowed him to fall against Ginyu's tricks, but the fact of the matter is that he was vastly superior to Ginyu when using his real power.Though before Goku went Super Saiyan power levels were not the deciding factor. Krillin could have killed Freeza if he got a good shot in with his energy Disc. Guldo was way weaker than Krillin and Gohan and he still won his fight. When Vegeta powered up and laid the smackdown on Recoome, Vegeta's power level was way higher than Recoomes for that breif time, but Recoomes insane durability allowed him to survive it, when it would have killed Burter or Jeice. Ginyu force members were winning their fights thanks to special abilities, not raw power. When Freeza transformed to his third form is when all the logic went away. What excuse was there for Freeza to suddenly be stronger and faster than Piccolo all of a sudden? None, Piccolo just had to lose badly all of a sudden and there was no time to think of a good reason. Dragonball may be charming and still quite entertaining, but it was pretty badly written, though any true DB/Z fan knows Akira Toriyama was getting jerked around by his bosses, with corperate meddling shitting all over everything he tried to do. Freeza was only meant to have 2 forms, his small form and his large form, Dr Gero and Marshmallow Man (#19 and #20) were originally meant to be the cyborgs trunks was talking about and Cell was only meant to have one form, his first.
Just my two cents on the way Dragonball/Z turned out, the power level/transformations ruining DB/Z is a sensitive subject for me.
Also Yajirobi could have killed Vegeta and Nappa with his sword...
Piccolo lost against 3rd form Freeza because Freeza was simply that much stronger than him. We're talking about power level multipliers here, and that would be more than enough to create a disparity between these two combatants. Piccolo was on par with 2nd form Freeza, so why would he be able to keep up with 3rd form Freeza? He just couldn't. Yajirobi couldn't have killed Vegeta and Nappa with his sword. He damaged Vegeta at most, and that was primarily because of how badly weakened Vegeta was at that point. He couldn't even move properly.
I agree with you about Toriyama not being the best of story writers, though. He's got a really bad memory, and doesn't think things out properly.

They only introduce power levels, to build the belief that the antagonist has a chance of winning... which is almost never the case.
Power levels don't mean shit, and neither do deaths.

yet they both lost to goku because they were too arrogant to kill him when they had the chance final form Frieza could've killed goku at anytime but didnt because of his cocky arrogance and btw if deaths irrelevant how come Brockenman Sr. didnt return from the dead hmm? and did anyone notice my comment about Kinnikuman Big Body being uploaded on WWE 13?

Cell was way stronger than Goku and was just toying with him. Goku also forfeited his match against Cell, because he actually knew Cell was holding back most of his power and could crush him at a moments notice, and as we know, in DBZ power = skill, intelligence, reflexes, speed, mental responsiveness, etc...
Freiza also apparently killed SSJ Goku, but Goku was revived with the Dragonballs, along with all of Freiza's other victims, totally refreshed, while Freiza was absolutely worn out.

I mean, FFS, DC brought back Jason Todd, and Marvel brought back Bucky. If you think comic deaths matter, you're f##king naive.
(And if you're going to start talking about Jonathan Kent and Uncle Ben, OR even Parker's parents... Guess what? They went there, too.)

Brockenman is more useful to the plot dead than alive, which is also why Kamehame will probably never return.
100% agreed... Although evil Brockenman zombie vs Brocken Jr. could be an interesting battle...
And both of those guys could be brought back with little to no explanation.

actually Frieza did not kill SSJ Goku it just took him awhile to get through all the lava he was buried in and if you remember Goku had been revived by the earth dragonballs before and last i checked you could only be revived once by the earth dragonballs

I'm starting to like Grim Reaper's technique-based style. It's different from the others who use raw power.
