So anyway, I have a question for y'all...

You can tell from the photos that the pink AshuraShines visually look very sharp. You can easily make out all the details in the sculpt at just a glance. I think it's because of the even tone of the pink rubber and the fact that it's very matte and opaque. Well, if you look at any of the white ones containing the special effect powders (before changing color in the sunlight, of course), it's the exact opposite. They look kinda like white amorphous blobs. There's very little contrast (basically no shadows), so it's harder to make out the surface details.

Well, I was thinking that for these white figures, maybe I can apply a thinned out black acrylic paint wash. It should seep into the crevices (of which, there are MANY!) and make the details stand out more. I think with the glow figures, especially, it would look hot because you'd probably see that detail in the dark as well.

Anyway, what do you guys think of this idea?

I agree that would look good on the glow figures. I just bought some GITD mini figures of Jason Voorhees and Leatherface. Jason has painted details on the hockey mask that look cool when he is glowing. Leatherface has no painted details anywhere on him, so he is just a fat chunk of glow in the dark.

i think it is a fantastic idea. it should really accentuate the different details and grooves.

I'm toying with the idea of grabbing some of these, but I don't think they look too good when not glowing. Plus, the standard colour figures are only £2 each on Amazon UK and have great detail.

That goes back to sanjeev's point (trying to get back on topic after I sent the thread off-topic). Most GITD figures I've seen don't look great when not glowing if they don't have some other color to them to make the details stand out.

im not a big fan of GITD figures for that reason, they are a gimmick. Their arent supposed to look good just sitting there, they are supposed to sit there and glow.

For real, I might just have to get those Tiny Terrors. They actually look kinda fresh!

And not off-topic at all...that's why I asked the question! Eric, I definitely agree that glow is a gimmick...but it's one I've ALWAYS loved. In fact, I used to have one of the biggest glow vinyl kaiju toy collections around. Check out this crazy shit:

Believe it or not, my girlfriend at the time was totally cool with it! LOL! Granted, that was several years ago and my collection focus has changed a ton since (mainly, I've switched to vintage kaiju toys...of which, sadly, very few are glowie). But anyway, the thing about glow vinyl kaiju is that they're usually painted in really cool ways that complement the glow effect. As such, they make for very fun toys--every bit as fun as non-glowies, but with the added effect of looking sweet in the dark. But I generally agree that unpainted glow toys (minifigs or not) generally look like boring blobs under normal light OR in the dark...hence the question.

I'm inclined to go with the dark wash to bring out the details. HOWEVER, I know some cats will frown on that because no paint of any sort normally goes on a MUSCLE! Monochrome is part of their charm and history, afterall. I can respect that. So maybe I should just make it an option, y'knowmsayin? I'll post pics of two side-by-side glow AshuraShines; one with the wash, one without...and folks just choose.

Cool. I'm leaning towards straight up glow but maybe after seeing some pictures I might go the other way. I love me some glow.

Not to put it on a pedestal or anything, but this is a really fantastic custom.
I will properly put this picture on flickr in about a week or so, after I rteturn from an upcoming trip.

(BTW - no photoshop used. Low light, an LED, and a glass mug of tea to filter the golden light)
