The color changing set from 3D Retro is not painted. The plastic itself changes color based on the temperature. Don't spread disinformation, especially when you don't know what you're talking about.

You are totally right.

I have no idea what i'm talking about. I'm just trying to spread disinformation. It's not like i asked about it on the octorbertoys site and got an answer from the guy who runs the place or anything.

Oh wait...

Zectron wrote:Are these sets painted with a color changing paints or made totally of color changing plastic/rubber?

LittleGeorge: Just like with our color changing Z.O.M.B.I.E. figures made by ZombiesandToys.com and Mindless Focus, these are made using color change paint. 320c when cold, to 185c when hot. Works with temperature change, air or water, doesn't matter. Just needs temperature change to work. If it's a nice hot day in your apartment, you'll see them change before your eyes!

Jackass.

It's possible the paint may somehow be fused with the plastic but from what i read it sounds like they are painted. If i'm wrong then cool cause i'd like the set more that way, but you're still a jackass either way.

Yeah, it's paint. My two year-old plays with his color change ZOMBIEs so much that the paint wore off in spots. That took a long time though.

It's still cool. The color change is instant, and happens in your hand pretty easily. Much quicker color change than a claw I have made with thermal color changing dust.

I might have skipped the color changing sets had I realized during SDCC that they were painted. Would've just asked my bud to pick up a purple set to save me the grief and eagerly await having every molded S1 color (again)! That's not because I hate painted figures, but it would be like me tracking down every AP custom and the like, something that I don't feel compelled to do with my collection. We'll see what I do when I have them in-hand at TFcon.

Anyone know what color the figures are underneath by chance?

I'd guess that they'd just have used some of the second run flesh sets for the colour changers, seems to make the most sense, but couldn't definitively say.

I couldn't care less that they're painted rather than colour change plastic. They will look great regardless and watching them change as the room temperature changes will be sweet! Looking ahead to the purple set release now too

It's most definitely paint. George over at OT said that it was the same setup as used for the color changing Z.O.M.B.I.E.s and was paint.

Not sure where you got your disinformation from, bro.

EDIT: Looks like someone beat me to the punch.

Not sure, but I know it is paint from the factory. When I get mine, I might nick off some of the paint under foot to see what the base plastic color was.

I'll be able to answer that after one of my sets is used as a bath toy for a couple months. I would guess flesh. It would be cool if it was something completely different. Maybe they did an orange run and painted them just to F with PimpNugget.

Based on everything I have read over there, I doubt that OT/George would have any issues with the designers using their own designs to make other stuff. And since the original sculpts also belong to the designers, I doubt there would be any problem with them reproducing them and selling them. However, that doesn't make any financial sense, as they can buy the figures from the factory for less than $1 each, hence negating any need for a silicone/rubber repro.
But if they were to do t-shirts, posters, comic books, new sculpts of the character, etc., I honestly don't see George having any issue with it as he has already stated that OT does not own the character designs.

I'm not hugging any

but I am a huge fan of the whole OMFG idea. Their group got together and designed a kick ass group of figures for Series 1 and were able to, because of Matt's contact with his Glyos factory, get the opportunity to have them mass produced for a very decent price. The did the fund-raising, offered independent dealers (such as myself, U of M, Rotofugi, etc.) an opportunity to buy in early, and gave the designers the ability to pick up some exclusive colored stock (cheap) for resale, too.
Funding transpired, and the line is a success.
OT owns OMFG, the artists own their characters.

OT wins because they have another successful line (like they do with Gwins and Zombies).

The artists win because they have their character (which they still retain all rights to) as part of a larger, successful line. They can now market the hell out of their character and even use that as a stepping stone to launch other characters that they have, as their audience/exposure is now exponentially bigger. I am going to take a guess and say that they can also order other colors of their figures in low runs, now, too. We also do not know if the artists get a small residual from the OT sales of OMFG. They might.

The OT community wins because they get to lay claim to having a hand in launching an incredible new line AND the figures are very fairly priced at $10 for a regular version and up to $15 for variant colors. Had they not been able to go PVC from Matt's factory, each figure would be $10-$20 a pop, instead of $2-$3 per.

In my opinion, that is a huge win all the way around.

To give it a different perspective, imagine if this were an entirely LRG created project. Imagine the same facts, different names.

So why hasn't LRG done something similar? There is loads of talent all over this board. Why not mass produce a 3 or 4 pack of tiny figures overseas like they have? I know most of the artists here collab together and get stuff produced and it's usually in a very nice squishy-firm rubber but the idea of an official LRG release is kind of awesome. I would imagine it would cover the cost of itself easily or even with a kickstarter. Then having possible profits help pay the hosting fees and whatnot for this place would probably be helpful. I do realize i haven't been here long and it's quite possible it has been discussed and or attempted in the past but i figure it couldn't hurt to ask.

I would love to do this but I think I will wait until we've got the kinks worked out of the ROTB line before I attempt something like a LRG line of mass produced LRG's.

George and the rest of the gang at OT already had a solid connection lined up with their previous ZOMBIE line.

But yes, once a solid reliable way for us to have them mass produced is 100% nailed down, I would love to do something like this!
