Dang Asator! That's pretty harsh man! I've learned that if a Bossman sees he can push you more than normal he will, and eventually he will EXPECT you to do more than you really should. I can honestly say I would have told the guy to shuv it if he told me I HAD to work on Saturday. But, then again it would depend on my responsibilities to myself and my family at the time too I guess.

I've only had my new job 2 days, and I'm already loving it! I work late at night, NO TRAFFIC, get home when everyone around here is asleep, I go to sleep for a few hours, wake up and chill all day! Then I take me an evening nap before work. I surely intend to make a career out of this job if I can. I'm hoping to either become a Driver eventually or maybe a part time manager, or maybe I'll have them pay for some schooling so I can get on a higher end UPS job.

In fact, I'm gonna go eat me a hotdog, right this minute! :)

I start at my new job tomorrow at Michaels craft store.

I had been doing landscaping for a number of years and when my wife and I bought our house, I found a new place to work so I didnt have to commute every day. I found a place close to home, making a little more than I had at my last place of enmployment and for a while everything was awesome. Then they had me start working a little bit of overtime here and there which was fine with me, more moolah! But then, here and there turned into 20-30 hours of overtime a week. Now those of you who have had labor intensive construction type jobs know that 40 hours a week can wear a person out, lemme tell you, a 70 hour week will kill.

Because of the overtime, my wife and I barely saw each other as she is the type of person who likes to go to bed at 9:30-10:00 if she can. It also turned the usually fun aspects of trying to make a baby, into something that was more of a chore. Thats when we could even find the time!

The friday morning before Memorial Day weekend I was greeted at work with the information that I had to come in on Saturday. HAD TO. I was told the day before. I had no time to change the plans that I had already made for that weekend and I was totally pissed that they didnt tell me sooner.

So that day, Friday, I was sent out to this job and was supposed to meet my boss at 8:00 for him to show myself and one other guy what to do. We waited and waited for him. For an hour and a half. He showed up at 9:30 to show us what he wanted done. He basically wasted an hour and a half of mine and the other guys time. So he starts showing us what he needs done. Long story short, the work he wanted done was way more than 2 guys could handle. Finally, he leaves and we get to work. By 2:30 we realize that we arent going to get everything done by 6:00 which is when we were supposed to be done. So I call my boss and he says dont come home till its done. So we said "fnck it" and started working very half-assed. We finished by 5:30 and man did we do some shoddy work. I didnt care, I wanted to go home and on top of that I was furious that he would send 2 guys to do what should have taken 3 guys an entire day to do (correctly).

Anyway, we get back at 6:30 (Memorial Day traffic on the parkway easy in Pittsburgh is horrible) and the other guy leaves. As I go to punch out my boss pulls me aside and tells me that he needs me to go mow 2 lawns and then deliver 3 seperate loads of bark to customers. At that point I had just worked an 11 and 1/2 hour day. On top of that, there were other workers who had already left who could have done one of those two things they asked me to do.

Cut to the quick, I quit. I walked out and told him I wouldnt be back. It was at that moment that I realized that I cant do this kind of work for the rest of my life.

So tomorrow I start at Michaels and have been in contact with Slippery Rock University to find out what it will take to get into their PREE (Parks, Recreational and Enviromental Education) program.

I'mma be a park ranger! :)

Hopefully soon though I can be a part time worker/part time stay at home dad. Honestly, thats the only thing I want to do right now is raise children. Everything else I do is really just steps taken so that I can do that.

Was that the owner of the company or just a manager?

Not that it matters now, except I can imagine the company going out of business real soon if it does crappy work like that. I think you're well out of it.

i can totally sympathize with you brew. i'm finally on a 40 hr work week after working myself to death for far too long. the money was good, but it just wasn't worth it. michael's will be a smooth place to work. wish i had known you'd be there a week ago, just spent some dollaridoos on some pens. should have had you hooked me up with the insider discount.

It was the owner. It was a small business, maybe like 4 guys that work there year round, and maybe 7 college kids who only work there in the summer. That was another thing that sucked, working with college kids. I'm out there trying to do a good job (before I wanted to quit that is) and they're out there just fncking around, not caring because to them its just a summer job. So half the time I ended up having to fix their work which only added to my workload. Being a "lifer" in a job like that means that you actually have to care a little bit.

I've since refused to be a "lifer" at a job till I know its THE one.

Things are looking up, me and a couple of friends just started a company which deals in promotion within the music business, we're called Audio Play, basically what we do is offer various forms of promotion to musicians including myspace, popular message boards and websites as well as in magazine print in the form of reviews and articles. Lots of money to be made and I'm real excited...

The new job is much more stressful, but I think it’s because I’m still figuring out the best practices. Hopefully I’ll come back to this thread and laugh at what I said.

Nope.

Well, it looks like all the stress and hardwork paid off. I got a promotion and a mountain of new responsibilities. Being that I work in Detroit, I'm just happy to have a job. So now it's new stress, but not quite like before.

I'm curious because the other side of our business is Career Transition and I was wondering what you think of AppleOne.

Hey all,

I was recently looking at the "what do we all look like" topic thread... and then I was reading about a member that was having issues with his current job situation and wondering if he should move on... and that started me thinking "I wonder what we all do for work?"

So I will be the first to share.  I'm a professional balloon artist.  At some point, I'll probably share some of my work in the art section of the forum.

Ok, who's next?

Literally hours ago I got a bit curious about this myself and was planning on posting the same question later today, so I'm a little freaked out by this ;)

Anyway, presently I work for a hospital and head all the e-learning initiatives for nursing and physician training for the Education department. I've been at this job for roughly a year. Job responsibilities include logo & brochure design, LMS administration, SCORM course development, photography, videography, and in-house tech support.

Prior to this position I worked for a number of years as the Web Admin for a local state university, and since 2006 have been a regional contract photographer for The New York Times.

Eventually I'd like to move entirely into photography, but for now this pays the bills.

I roast coffee for a living :)
I've been at it for ten years, and I'm in the process of buying the company I work for. I can't imagine doing anything different with my life, at this point - I love it so much.

Had no idea Eric was a carpenter, though it make sense with all of the toy sculpting ;)

Ironhaus' profession...yeah, that sounds about right.

Everyone else, it's cool to see how different we all are in our personal lives, and yet we're brought together by a unique bond :)

Be9ine and Warsystem,

yeah, doing something you love is the best. My wife also twists balloons with me, although part time, and we both just love working with kids.  The last couple of months, we have been really just getting our sea legs, but hopefully 2014 will be a good year (especially after the last two have been so crazy <see earlier thread>).

Not sure which country you are from, but I suppose most Canadians don't even know this. The CF has a 3-stage interview process before they consider you "eligible for service." This is the stage I am at. After you are considered eligible, you go on a waiting list for a job opening. You get put into a list based upon your qualifications, how well you did on your aptitude test, interview, etc. You then get a job offer accordingly.

It's a very long, drawn out process. I've currently been in the pipeline for just under a year and just got listed as eligible for service last month. (And that is considered fast).

Draznar -

I'm in the U.S.

I didn't make the connection from your earlier post that the position you are up for is in the CF (although re-reading your previous post I should have).

Congrats on officially becoming eligible.  So is the long drawn out process primarily all the steps it takes to become eligible?  Does that mean by officially being eligible, in theory you don't have much longer to wait... or it's more just wait and see?
