I didn't know Superman was that big in Japan.

They did have SUPAIDAAMAN, though. Hell yeah.

It's hard from our point to see how big the '78 Superman film was in Japan, but it seemed to come out during that major Hero Craze in Japan which also had the Spiderman series (and Captain America reviving Sentai with "Battle Fever J"), the continued prescence of Ultraman and Kamen Rider, and all other sorts of hero shows and such that was in and around Japanese culture when Kinnikuman began in '79. My guess: in some ways Jump took a chance with Kinnikuman both in it being a parody and to go along with the hero craze of the late 70s...unknowing of the major influence it in itself would bring.

@bigbody: Well it was a crooked gyuudon considering Harabote was a big jerk...as was Suguru. And...yeah, assumably it's "the languages of Planet Kinniku" considering I highly doubt he knew any Earth languages at that point. (though it does bring up a weird thought: it is weird that Planet Kinniku would have multiple languages and dialects on it considering most alien civilizations in fiction seem to have all of it's beings speak the same way as compared to the thousands of languages on Earth)

I'm still bothered by the fact that he suddenly has the Super Phoenix mask as a kid... As I recall he didn't get it until the evil god possessed him.

Original version of Phoenixman:

Yeah...well unfortunately there was an utter failure of mental aptitude at this point considering there is one mistake per chapter by now. Besides, it just gets ridiculous that we end up seeing Phoenixman in the Super Phoenix mask...wearing glasses. (then again he's not the only one who gets a change between first appearance and flashback: Powerfulman looks nothing like he does in his flashback...and has a zebra to boot when he first appears...when Zebra Kid should be dead)

Chp. 385:

Johnny told his mama, hey, 'Mama, I'm goin' away.
I'm gonna hit the big time, gonna be a big star someday', Yeah.
Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eye.
Johnny said, 'Don't cry, mama, smile and wave good-bye'.

BTW: got the chapter after this done too but I have a ton to say with this being the countdown to the finish...so that will be tomorrow...and then...

The blocky man who has a ton of prominence is Tileman, the Choujin who was knocked out of the roller skating race in the second Choujin Olympics...then gets stuffed down Benkiman.

... I see. I can't fathom why they would picture HIM of all Chojin. At least someone like Cubeman or Benkiman was more memorable.

(By the way, the best fight in the series BY FAR is Cubeman vs. Chie no Wa Man)

I think the only reason why Tileman was used was size and ease to draw. He's such a large, prominent Choujin that stuffing him into all the crowd shots makes it easier to show the magnitude than using, say, Chienowaman.

Yeah Chienowaman/Cubeman was a classic fight but...really short considering the winner got a one-way-ticket to Wolfman and no real chance of being an Idol or anything...probably stuff like this and Warsman/Teapackman were so classic but so short that it was hard to really include them on my list.

Wolfman's one win. Poor Wolfman.

Warsman/Teapackman is another hilarious fight, yes. It's a pity we didn't really get any of those fights after the Warsman arc, all fights had to be BIG and EPIC. At least we got the Hawkman and Mr. VTR fights in the Throne arc...

The closest we get to "comedy fights" post-Big Fight are probably some of the early fights of each arc, like Kinnikuman/Stecase King. Hawkman and Mister VTR are close but they're less "light fights"...and more just plain good fights without all the bull-crap. (even with the occasional funny moment like the one scene with Zebra and Parthenon)

Hi there! :(

I have a smal suggestion, maybe you could have summary of the series on Team Kinniku website, and maybe a summary of each volume. If you guys think it's a bit of a pain to do, then I could do it... I can think of a good summary...

by the way Ataru, your siggys are funny, especially the one about Meat...lol XD

I guess I want to remind people that the series isn't just about wrestling.

Chp. 386: OK, so if the Neptune Message was for the Choujin of Earth...who invited Beansman?: http://mangahelpers..../releases/20965

Well...I do want to do a major warning: the final chapter (which is all that's left) and the afterword is done...but they're not being put up until tomorrow. I have a lot to say, both to the manga-reading community and to all you guys in honor of this occasion...and I'm so tired after putting up everything with this chapter that I can't put it up until tomorrow. This won't be the end of my existence on this board...but I do really need a break from all things Choujin.

Doesn't this mean Wolfman has TWO wins - One against Cubeman, one against the God of Strength?

:)

By the by, is that... Kendaman in the background of 113?

And yeah, I agree with most of what you wrote at the end (very funny read, by the way, thanks for that) although I liked some things... Like Kamehame interfering in the Stray Devils match and Pentagon's comeback.

It wasn't Kamehame's interference completely, it was just seeing all those scenes of him climbing the mountain randomly while we see the New Machinguns/Stray Devils fight. Once he gets up there, its great. And...I just never liked Pentagon and him having time-control powers just fried my brain. (especially considering the Perfects take it a step further by arc end)

Yeah, the scene of him climbing was very drawn-out. But the fact that he fairly successfully fought the two strongest Devil Chojin at once was just awesome.

Yonjigen Sappou/Muscle Brothers remains one of my favourite fights, though.

It just feels weird though thinking about it now: Kamehame's return at the start of the Tag arc just felt so much like a plot device at first, with him suddenly returning out of nowhere when "the Friendship has been taken" to team up with Suguru, only to essentially die due to a wring through the Cursed Roller...yet not quite dead with his reappearances for the rest of the arc and his classic cameo in the Throne thanks to Omegaman. Yet somehow or another...it worked. Maybe it was the free-wheeling style of the series that prevented Yude from remembering him after his first appearance in Hawaii until the Tag arc, but it's strange that what felt so much like a plot device had resonance with the last two arcs, changing Kamehame from being a strange convenience (some wrestling refugee from another planet who happens to live in Hawaii when Suguru goes on his American tour and taught him everything he'd use for the rest of the series) to probably one of the most important and memorable characters in the series.

Refugee from another planet? At least in his themesong he's said to be the uncrowned king of the Kamehameha line.

One thing that really bothered me is how they retconned him into being over 60 when he took the championship belt. Did he get those 999 title defenses in ~15 years?

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

Well...the time has come. I actually said a lot in my post-script, but I sort of want to make a special message to all of you here on LittleRubberGuys due to everything you've done for me in the last year and a half. When I first started on Kinnikuman, all we really had were the Toriyama World scripts (which everyone wanted to keep even if I wanted to make a redo) and a bunch of fans who didn't want me to write about Suguru fighting shrimp monsters and giant turkeys and just skip ahead to the Gold Mask arc. To tell the truth, I'm sort of happy that the series is "complete" instead of just out there in a bunch of random fragments as it was originally. As bizarre and stupid as some parts were, everything Yudetamago did had a purpose for character development, with A leading to B, B to C and so on. I know people probably didn't want to see the random misadventures of Kinkotsuman or see Specialman and Canadianman in the only moments they actually were important or try to figure out why the heck Choujin get a theme park in St. Louis, but it's these little touches that actually allow for one to appreciate the growth and development of this world. Besides, in some ways I rather have the shrimp monsters and giant turkeys over Iron Sweat, Voodoo Dolls of Friendship and the Muscle Prophecy any day.

In a way, it's because of all of you here on LRG that I was able to have the support to do what I needed to do with this series. Unlike a lot of the manga I translate, which seem to go out into an empty world with no real response from anyone, I had a fanbase to back me up and push me along from day one, helping me, critiquing me, yelling at me for not getting scripts done fast enough, guys I could joke and threaten to allow for the existence of Beatlebomb or Buster Crabb. (yeah...I never wanted to use those either) And I guess there are a few people at the top of my head that I can thank right here and now for everything...I know I'm probably forgetting a ton of people but I have a bad memory with names:

-Tash (Stecase King): You were the guy who probably was more of the crux of the project than I ever was. Sure I translated the manga, but you did a lot of the scanslations that came after my scripts, polishing them, giving them sheen, and making sure they had the right amount of spit and shine in the spit-shine. You also had a lot of other cool interests as well in some of the crazier hero stuff out there, not just the comedy arc but "Batman: The Brave and the Bold"...and reminded me to get back to "Iron Man: Armored Adventures"...which I really need to. I think you're more important than stupid old me and I thank you for getting these scripts more presentable.

-Knuxie Chan: If Tash got the manga ready for distribution...then you're the esteemed distributor that got it out to the world. Helping out Kinniku-fans one chapter at a time, that's your motto. And you're the one who sort of kept us all together even in our harder times. Thanks for doing so.

-Meat's Fan: I can't forget you, considering you're probably one of the first really big fans of the project! Reading the scripts once upon a time, eagerly anticipating all of Meat's moments, and applauding when I finally got to that big Mixer Taitei fight and that epic Back Drop. I guess you're sort of happy he still is a kid in Nisei...but hey, you're also a Brocken fan too and his final battle...well probably one of his best moments alongside his Ninja fight.

-JaketheJackal (Katatonia): I know many think of him as probably the biggest controversy on this board and probably in the fandom, but somehow the two of us connected. We're both fellow translators, we both are struggling to get more manga recognition out there and do the things people really aren't getting to anywhere else. Heck, I've even had moments where I just can't speak to him...but the thing is, you're not that bad, Jake. You're probably the biggest fan of my insane, innane rants about the worst moments of Kinnikuman, laughing along at the insanity of the Perfect Choujin pulling the "Superman bit" and appreciating my rants about how Dr. Bombe is the most evil character in the entire series. He's introduced me to "Tatakate! Ramenman", I introduced him to "Sakigake!! Otokojuku"...and somehow, even with "those moments", we make a crazy pair...of what I don't know.

-Matto: Sometimes I like you, other times...well...let's say that you're memorable and I like you a lot. Personally whenever I see how horrible the girls of Kinnikuman and Nisei are treated, I think of you defending them to the bitter end...except Mari but she screws everything up.

-Kinnikumanbigbody: You haven't been around but your enthusiasm has been genuine and it's been great pleasing you with all of your likes and dislikes of the series.

-Shino619: Sort of hard to say too much but like Bigbody, your enthusiasm has been infectious for the series and my translations and I welcome that.

-Tubba: It's strange considering you haven't been on the board for too long but has probably become a delightful conversationalist regarding the series and everything that has happened in such a short time. I know I don't know as much as you and forget things easily but I really liked talking to you about all things Kinnikuman...even if Chienowaman got screwed out of his only notable fight.

-TheOrgg: Our boss, our manager, our all and all god. Just like Knuxie, you're the one who helped get the whole shebang together, being there from the moment the project started, helping me and the rest of us along and keeping an eye to make sure that Kinnikuman got out to the fans and anyone who wanted to read it.

I know I'm forgetting quite a few but let me just say this to all of you: doumo arigato gozaimash ita. If it weren't for you, there wouldn't be a Kinnikuman fan base and I wouldn't have someone to tell me what to do and how not to screw this project up. It's been a long year and a half and I'm happy that we've all had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun with this classic shonen manga. I'm not going away from LRG...I will be doing the wedding chapter hopefully within a week and will still chat on the boards and such, but somehow I just feel like eventually I'll end up doing what I always do...drift away to other parts unknown. Hopefully all of you will prevent me from doing so in the end, I hope. And thanks one more time for allowing for some idiot Bo-bobo translator to reveal a major key to shonen history and one of the most important and fun shonen manga out there to the English speaking world.

And now, with all that said and done...

Chp. 387: And to think, the "future" of Choujin isn't going to be left to those there on that fateful day...but to a gazelle, a walrus, and Suguru and Terry's sons. I fear what sort of future they're going to end up living in...but it's going to be really screwed up regardless: http://mangahelpers..../releases/20989
