Was it? I got 2 blues and one yellow.
I guess that's not technically 3 sets...
I guess I am a bit slow on the draw haha.

As some one who is just now discovering mordles, it's great to see those old ones. Thanks for taking the time (and I'm impressed that you have all ten originals).
Question: did each original mordle come in only one color? That is, are all of the long-legged ones orange?

This one is my favorite.

Yes. Each figure only came in one color, which is probably a good thing considering how hard they are to find, nowadays.

Regarding color, interestingly there are 2 tones for the blue, red, and purple sculpts. The 2 blue sculpts varied btwn a baby blue (see my avatar) and darker blue. The 2 red sculpts were either bright red or deep red. And most noticably, the 2 purple sculpts were either Barney purple or magenta/pink. I have no idea if that is manufacturing site variance or raw material variance btwn batches.

I just got the mordle on the left today and figured I'd take a picture to demonstrate what you're talking about. The camera flash probably brightens their colors a bit, but you can definitely see the one on the left is more purple. He has a "4" on his back, while the mordle on the right has a "3".

That's weird. In your pic, the one on the right appears red and the left looks magenta/pink. It may be the flash though. I will have to do side-by-side comparison shots of what I am referring to. I have a couple of these sculpts that are as purple as McDonald's Grimace guy! Maybe there are 3 different colors for this Mordle. Maybe your red one is a test shot. How cool would that be for you, Fuzz!!!

My two orange mordles are different tones, as well. I think the codes on their backs may pertain to different waves. One has a 1 on its back, the other a 4B. To me, that definitely looks like an early and late wave, which could explain the color difference.

Yeah, the one I got today definitely isn't that dark. Maybe there are several colors. What are the numbers on the back of your dark purple mordles?
I actually have the answer to this one:
Ideal was running multiple tools on certain lines, RBT being one of them. The numbers on the backs correspond to those different tools.
I would have to look and see if I kept examples, but I think at one point I had Evil Beetles that were made in two different places, based on the copyright info on the figures.
I definitely have two SOTAs from Robo Force which are completely different toolings on some places to rectify an issue with one of the functioning bits.

Yep, you're right! I have two evil beetles as well, and the copyright stamps are different. One says made in China and is much smaller, the other says Hong Kong. Their leg designs are different, too. I have two terrorantulas that also have totally different leg designs in regards to how the connect to the main body. They have different copyright stamps, too. One says China and is small, the other Hong Kong.
So then basically, any differences just means they were manufactured at different locations?
Also, have you ever had any bugs where the rubber part you squeeze is rock hard? I have two like this. Could this problem be related to the different tools, as well? Did they use different materials?
For example, the Manglors egg - the tool that still exists makes two 'identical' eggs at the same time. They are slightly different in certain ways, but for all intents and purposes, the same.
Ideal may have made a tool that could make the same Mordle multiple times - still waiting on some paperwork to confirm this. Hence, 4B, etc.
The materials difference - making plastic is like making a cake. You mix up the plastic and try to make it to a recipe, but sometimes it comes out different. They try to make "flexible squeezy rubber" for an Evil Beetle, but the mix is off (or worse, listed incorrectly) and the next thing you know, you have an EB who is as hard as a rock. Yes, I do have one of those rock-hard EBs in my collection (which sounds wrong). There's no way we could know definitively without talking to someone from back then, or their notes.
The variants in blue/purple original Mordles is the same thing - it could be the factory thinking blue means blue and mixing up the wrong blue, an intentional change, unintentional change, loss of ability to make original color, two different factories, two different toolings...
If you want a good example of how dealing with factories can be, there are some great articles in Tomart's magazine with Todd McFarlane, where he explains the early Spawn figures having variants that he didn't intend - such as the factory deciding not to paint the sign with Overkill to save Todd money (even though he told them TO paint the sign) and the factory not understanding "worn paint" on Chapel's face, instead painting it to look like mud.

So we have some more Mordles coming this weekend (7/14)...what colors are you guys thinking?
Posted 12 July 2013 - 04:20 AM
I'm hoping for green.

In reference to DK's teaser email, it appears they wil be neon green and magenta. Cool, cool all around...
The green has what appears to be purple paint apps making it the unofficial "Joker edition".
