Hello, I recently came across a Green Manic Mandrill. I have no idea how it came to be this way, one would dismiss this as a knock off or possibly custom. But upon further inspection:

1. The paint appears to be factory paint, if it was painted over residue of the old paint would be visible, but it is not, even in the faded areas.

2. The plastic is not inferior and it appears to be of good quality

3. There is no stamping at the base of each feet.

4. There appears to be a "1991" stamping on the back waist and the #60 number is missing

5.  When compared side to side with the normal colored Manic Mandrill the green one appears slightly smaller.

Any info or ideas of who this guy is will be appreciated.

Looks like a bootleg made in 1991.  Pretty impressive, though.

We've talked about this before on here. I don't have time to go find the thread, but I believe it was determined to be a prototype.

He's cool.  The green suits him but that pink belt/codpiece has to go...

Hello everyone, thanks for the info. It is definately a cool piece. With the other messages I've received I get mixed info that it might be a prototype or a bootleg, if anyone has more info on it would be great. Yes ScreaminDemon, that is the auction I got it from.

It is a Chinese Bootleg that came from the factory in China where the original Beasts were made as well, they were spread amongst collectors outside China a while ago together with the Prototype Laser Beasts which we´ve seen before. Based on the pics and the details there´s a big chance your figure is the Mandrill shown in this lot; http://www.littlerub...239457&p=642118

There´s quite a couple interesting things about this fig I didn´t know because the number on the back is new to me and it also looks like its a little smaller in size than the actual figure.

Do the arms function and rotate like the normal one?

Hello Beastformer, thanks for the info and amazing pics in that link. I'll have to look at it again tonight in more detail to find my guy. Yes his arm does rotate like the regular figures.

After looking at the detailed pics you included in the openings post there´s a couple of interesting details I noticed as well;

- Difference in height, which was already mentioned.

- Different (deeper) mold marks and on different places (the round dots)

- Odd proportions of the figure (hands are clearly smaller but in relation to that scale the arms seem to be more stretched)

- The 1991 Stamp

All together this is the evidence that´s in line with the thought so far of these figs not being prototypes or test shots like the Laser Beasts discussed in the topic mentioned above in my first reply but that they are indeed Chinese Bootlegs created in China and probably in or close to the original Factory where Takara had the Beastformers made. In 1991 there was no production anymore of original Beasts so that stamp gives away the idea they´re going this bootleg way with the remains of the old molds. In which case its not very strange we see Series 2 and 3 figs only here because those were the figs that´d have been produced until the final days of the line so if there´d be any ¨left over¨ molds its understandable it´d had to be any of the later figs in the line.

I expected the length difference to be caused by the fact they took of a little bit of the foot in thickness, resulting in the absence of the stamp we know underneath the feet of Series 3 figs, but based on these pics that´s not very clear. Another fact that could´ve caused this is a different production condition because we´ve seen before with other BB bootlegs that some are often smaller due to a different material used and or the combination with higher temperatures causing the figs to shrink a little bit inside the molds.

As for the paint that´s applied it´d be interesting to see and find out if the colors that are applied here are in line with any of the colors we know from the original Beasts. For instance is the Green of the armor the exact same color of the Green of the Orangutan or does any of the colors match the colors of an original Beast. Because if that´s the case there´d be a more direct link with the original factory because it´d be hard to match the exact same color tones as the originals and since these are bootlegs they´d probably not have invested to much time in creating the exact colors so they´d not mind if the colors were of. So the color can tell quite a bit more about the origin of them.

The pics clarify a few questions about these Chinese Beasts but there´s still a couple ??? left to be solved, as always ;)

Hello,

I have been asked about the paint of this fig which would help identify where it came from. Here are some pics of him with his other green armored buds from the series It appears to be a lighter green that has faded a bit from age, but never the less the paint to me appears factory paint like the other battle beasts, this one is just of a different shade. His arm does rotate.

Sorry for the late reply here as I overlooked this update.

Thanks for the pics!

As you mentioned we´ve to keep in mind the chance of shade differences and how the figure was stored or kept over the years because all of that might´ve influenced the color over time. It´s to bad there´s no perfect match on the Green although it does come quite close at some points. I´d expected the green to match the Orangutang or the Tarsier´s green because those are also Series 3 so in case those were produced during the same period it´d have made sense it was done with the paint of any of those. Any chances you can match the Purple of the Belt as well with any armor colors (Zebra/Cobra)? Or maybe we´re to much pointed on the armor colors that we forget that those colors might´ve also come from some of the color used for the little details..... Since the paint color so far is not giving enough certainty there´s another maybe more simply route we can go; Did you try to place this Mandrill besides the original Mandrill? Because if it is indeed produced in the same factory the skin color should match perfectly, although there might also be some influences from aging but it should be visible imho.

It´s an interesting quest so far...

I wanted to resurrect this thread since there was another example of this Mandrill bootleg on Taobao until list week. Naturally I was hoping it was a testshot, but the telltale "1991" on the back proves otherwise. The seller didn't seem to know much about the figure and didn't have any more either. I think we've seen the green painted one surface at least a few times now (or has it all been the same one?), but I don't recall any unpainted figures, figures molded in this plastic color, or Mandrills with such amazing eyes and eyebrows. :)

There have been a few unpainted ones but they do seem less common.

Nice find
