Showcase #1: Starting a new collecting journey

It is the oddest feeling to write about something other than Kinnikuman & Kinkeshi! I decided to start collecting Battle Beasts this month and a big part of that decision lay in what I have read about the line on LRG and my last trip to Japan.

My Battle Beast journey began with Mandarake, while shopping for Kinkeshi at the Micro-kan store (the Nakano Tokyo branch).

I saw a giant lot of 54 Battle Beasts on display in a glass case at Mandarake.

When I decided to pull the trigger on starting to collect Battle Beasts I inquired at the Nakano Mandarake branch via email if they still had the set available and they did (I also inquired about Laser Beasts in general).

Since am a language trainer I have a ton of Japanese students and they help me out with writing key words or sentences in Japanese that I use when making my inquiries :)

So I ended up getting additional Laser Beasts as well. But the nicest part was that they included 3 extra figures to the Lot (doubles) because they had made the listing (according to them) with all the figures having rubs on them and when they double checked the inventory they realized 3 figures had no rubs.

So all in all, 57 figures (only including the Lot) for about 6.70 EUR each (the Lot cost 50,000 yen) I felt was a good deal.

The pot got sweetened when I received them and found out that that the Lot also included a Sunburst Pirate Lion!!!

Plus not to mention the extra weapons they came with (4 of them belong to Laser Beast figures).

On top of that I bought some figures from another LRG member and realized that I now have a lot of variants/Bestias de Combate as well.

I know part of the fun of collecting is the hunt and not just getting complete collections but what most attracted me about collecting BB are the Laser Beasts, The SD Keshigomu & the gumball figures.

Those will be fun to seek out because rarity has never stopped me from collecting (even with Kinkeshi); especially the SD Keshigomu Battle Beast sculpts :)

This thread will be dedicated to my recent acquisitions:

I did some rearranging and placed Series 1 Battle Beasts inside my glass case; I wanted that toy store display feel :)

Some more Series 1 variants (1 Bestias De Combate & 1 "regular" Battle Beast):

Beside the paint job color scheme being different, another difference is the size of the 4 on the back:

Some more Series 1 variants; reminds me of the times I collected MOTU figures and variants from Mexico, Taiwan etc:

#06 Triple Threat Snake

Attached File  1.jpg   58.72K   2 downloadsAttached File  2.jpg   50.94K   5 downloads

The differences in the back are pretty OCD: one figure has the T below the H for HASBRO and the other figure has the T below the A in HASBRO + slight difference in color shades; other than that damn near identical (thanks to Beastformers I now know one is an A mold and the other a B mold):

Another Series 1 variant; glossy color finish on one figure and the yellow shades are different (one is more canary):

What a great way to start off a collection and congratulations on scoring the sunburst lion. It’s definitely a awesome figure.

Not sure if the lighting in the pictures does it or if the blue coloured armour parts on your sharks are quite different. Maybe you can have a closer look at them? One of them looks way more dark blue then the other. Anyways thanks for sharing and happy hunting the rest of the beasts.

Good eye! One of the sharks is a Bestias De Combate (thats why the shade of blue and armor's color scheme is different) :)

We´ve discussed a lot of them via PM already and as I mentioned before and as bot3ro points out as well the valid point here is the light which can be a bit confusing. BUT there are obvious marks to look at and I honestly thought you almost had me with the Snakes because the placement of the @Hasbro and @Takara sign on the back of the right one (close up pic) are odd compared to the other one. It definitely ain´t BDC but that´d make it even more strange and it´s not in line with our knowledge so far so I had to run through some Snakes to see what´s going one. First 5 Snakes, similar to the Left one, didn´t help but those were all B and C molds. Luckily the last Snake I had did gave the satisfying result... It´s an A mold Snake. You can find the letter inside the armor that´s pointing outwards on the left feet of the figure. So please check yours and confirm it´s an A figure ;) The Snake is also a good example to show they ¨messed up¨ a little with the placement of the number because the #6 is clearly visible on the back in the green part in between the upper and lower body armor but it is also visible in a smaller way on the back left leg. This gives away a bit of how the mold evolved over time but it´s still not completely clear what´s been the correct order there, we´re still figuring that out. Glad we don´t have to add another odd mold to the list because luckily it´s just an A mold Snake :)

Never have I been so excited to read a post Beastformers! You are correct (A mold and a B mold); even if its not a BDC I am still digging the differences in molds.

It almost makes me feel like I own a completely different figure.

I asked you about collectors of Battle Beast collecting 3 of each figure because of the rubs but do collectors also collect A, B, & C molds as well? That would amount to an insane checklist!

I know about a few collectors going after a set of the different symbols for each figures but personally the A/B/C Molds would be more interesting to me but in both cases it means you´re looking at 76x3=228 figs to collect. Like the initial Battle Beasts commercial mentioned collect all 84! Referring to the first 28 Beasts (Series 1) times 3 (different symbols). If you really go crazy you could go A/B/C Molds and than for each mold 3 Symbols which would come down to 76x9(!!) = 684 Beasts... And than there still are the LB as well ;)

ps. Glad the research pays off and you confirmed the A mold on the Snake, otherwise we´d had to go back to the drawing board :)

#08 Sledgehammer Elephant

Not much a difference here besides one Elephant being "A" & "B" (the pink shade is also different but I attribute that to discoloration), for me the font of the 1986 looks different on both but maybe am crazy:

#015 Gruesome Gator

The differences on these two: The HASBRO/TAKARA/Year stamp, color shade, one Gator is marked "A" on one leg and the other Gator has the number 15 on the other leg:

#017 Hardtop Tortoise

The materials are different (one more rubbery and the other more plastic; however the copyright is in the exact spot on the shell). One I believe to be the Hardtop Tortoise Orange Plastic version:

Can someone tell me the deal with stickers on the foot of Battle Beasts from Japan? Did children put them on the figures or did they come straight out of the box like that?

Its hard to tell if I own a "Lavender Armor" version, in person they appear to have a difference in shade. One has a "gloss" finish and the other a mat duller finish:

Just arrived today! One more addition to Series 1 is either a European sculpt or a #05 Bestias De Combate Carp; it is made with a similar alternate white plastic as the Lion and Bird. The biggest distinction is the circles over the shoulder/chest armor:
