Ha! So it is! Anothing thing I never noticed before! Cheers Nik and trumanshower

After scrutinizing as best I can, I'm convinced this is genuine.

FYI Nik, incase you hadn't already realized, the figure is worth a lot of money, even if you're not planning on selling it, make sure to take care of it and make sure your daughter does too! I'd suggest storing it separately to your other figures so it doesn't get discolored.

I'd bet that it was branded on before the material of the figure was fully cooled. There were probably so few of these made that it wouldn't make sense to use a separate mold.

It's nice that it's a neon purple one as I don't think those ever become discolored (has anyone ever seen staining on a NP figure?).

Thanks for being so forthcoming with additional details/photos, Nik.

I wonder how many of these were made. And I wonder what other colors they made them in, if any.

I'm glad you posted that pic 80s child....

I know it was a joke but it's helpful somewhat. If it was branded AFTER the figured had been cooled then you would have seen the rubber around it push up or ripple up... Like what we see in your pic 80s child.

With the real one - there doesn't seem to be excess rubber around the edges of the star which strengthens the argument that it was either branded before being cooled or part of the mold. I assume it's branded before cooled... Because it doesn't make since to make a mold for so few figures.

Which makes me wonder in general... If these were supposedly 1 out of every 10,000... In general what sort of print run did MIMP see around this time? Does anyone know or is there even a way of knowing?

Neon Purple can be stained with ink from storage with newspaper and they get faded in the sun. Beyond that, I have not seen any staining on them.

Thanks for everyone's help and information, it's been really exiting for me to find out I have such a rare figure. I didn't know the other figures could stain them, right now I have them all on a shelf standing next to each other, some might be touching a little....  should I space them better? I'm going to have to put them on a bigger shelf soon anyway as this one is almost full. I am missing 1 series one figure , 9 figures from series 2 and I have only 1 series 3 figure.

The ones you want to be most careful with are the greens and yellows (both neon and regular). When those are in contact with red and neon red figures for an extended period of time (especially in heat), they can get pink/red stains that are permanent.

Yeah, I doubt you'd have any trouble with staining based on that setup, but you can never be too careful. If you ever store them together in a container, it's best to separate by color in plastic bags.

Nice display, and congrats on the starred Troll! You're the first one to come forward with one in the 15+ years people have been discussing MIMP online.

Do you think the circle on the back of Jotun Troll was an augur ? Does he was predestined to be the legendary star monster ? As this circle give a plain surface for printing the star. Or do other mimp have this plain surface, and star monster could be an other monster ?

I love how every few years we seem to get a new discovery with this line, on 2 different instances we found out about the New Jersey arcade that had batches or rare colors and now this. I wonder if we'll ever see a trident with his weapon?

Maybe some prototype Triton would have it. It would be a cool custom if nothing else.

Or maybe more premium colors that haven't been found yet. If those arcade ones turned up suddenly, who knows what else might.

I'd bet Triton never made it to production with his weapon, but you never know. As a kid I was always more bummed they took away most of Medusa's cleavage than I was that they took away Triton's weapon. :p

Another thing I didn't know! But upon comparing the production figure with the prototype, yes Medusa does indeed seem to have had some kind of reduction surgery lol. "My eyes are up here" haha!

Other than Triton and Medusa, did any other monsters change in any way from the prototypes?

I think Triton and Medusa were the only two that had any noticeable differences from prototypes to the produced figures, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Try these:

That's pretty much how the pamphlet photo of Medusa looked to me as a 6 year old, haha.

Little late to reply to this crazy thread.. I can't believe that after all this time a star monster finally turns up! I'll admit I was sceptical at first, but I'm really starting to think this is the real deal.

I always thought the star monster was a Jotun Troll; the Aussie release of these had the same silhouette on the back of the boxes so maybe the chunkiness of that made me think it was that particalr figure. I've never even seen an African pack.
I was kind of hoping for a pentagram though, that would have been sweet! Still, a star is a star.

Incredible find Nik, thanks for posting here dude! If you ever do decide to part with it, I hope you'd consider doing an auction on the boards here or if you ebay it, post about it here and let us know.

I will definitely give a heads up if I decide to sell it in the future. A pentagram would be a lot cooler I agree, but might have gotten Matchbox in a bit of a religious backlash back in the day.

Matchbox made enough stir using Kali and Ganesha as monsters. Pissed off a lot of the religious folks. I was looking forward to a Jesus and Muhammad MIMP too...
