Yes, you have been reading it correctly; ¨Renaming the Laser Beasts"

So far this is only one of the results of a still ongoing journey into re-translating some of the good old documentation that has been around for years. With the current progress the Beastformers Archaeology (BA) Team is making and after some internal discussions knowing presenting such a name change for names that are generally accepted and known for years we have decided to make this step simply because some translations done in the past were not accurate or incomplete. Which means we´re not actually Renaming them for the fun of it but they are Corrected. Curious to see which Laser Beasts (LB) names are changed and which not check out the full article on the Beastformers Blog;

Renaming the Laser Beasts

The names will be released in 3 Phases and with the 1st Phase (May 1st 2020) the first 12, so called lower, LB are discussed followed by the next Phase (next 12 LB) every following week until May 15th when all the new LB names should be done. According to the Green V (V) in the header image you can check the current status.

With these new names the History of the Battle Beasts line has become a little bit more clear again but we are still far from done so there it more to come from the BA team.

Feel free to share your thoughts and comments in regards to this article because we´re fully aware this can shake up some things knowing names we´ve been used to within the BB Community for over a decade are suddenly no longer correct...

SURREAL? Get used to it :D

Enjoy the Beasts!

I just want to say a lot of research and cross back an forth with these names has been done. I am not an expert by all means, but I have a lot of sources I use to come to the right conclusions. I know I don't post a lot anymore, but the LB names have bugged me since day one coming to the boards when it was Beastformers.com. I do hope you guys enjoy and like Beasformers said, I also look forward to you guys sharing your thoughts.

I can dig this for sure, but it may be too little to late; with the names out there as for 20+ years it'll be hard to undo the translations that are out there. It was a fun read and makes a bit more sense. Somethings get settled in stone and stick, for right or wrong "One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind". That missing "a" was the blight on Neil Armstrong till the day he died. We now know he said (or meant to say) that "a" but the annals of time keep putting it in wrong. It's an uphill battle that may never be won, but I respect the work to dig for the more accurate truth.

Actually I don't think so, because everything that will be put out now will have the new/correct translations. New people coming in that's all they will see, and the old miss translated names will soon fade away. Just because it's been said that way for 20+ plus years doesn't make it correct.

And that's your right 108KickBack, but why use incorrect names that don't make sense? Shool? That's what I don't understand. I brought this up a long time ago and got about the same response as most people don't care. Which is a shame because the toy line deserves better can continuing to use outdated information. But hey, I guess to each his own.

It´ll be completely up to the BB Community whether or not these names are accepted or not.

I think it´s obvious that this is not something that´ll easily change knowing it are names we´re used to and have gotten familiar with so it definitely has impact, maybe they´ll gradually become adapted in time and we won´t know better in 2 years from now but it´s also likely that the old names will continue to stay around.

Either way it´s not a problem all we did with this is correct what´s wrong and share it so people can make up their mind about it. But as mentioned in the opening post here it´s a change that´ll have it´s impact and that´s also something we discussed internally and were aware of. We didn´t and don´t expect all collectors to walk away with it but from now on it´ll be those names that´ll be communicated via the Beastformers Blog. Which means that new collectors who might check the checklist there or look for info might not know better other than that in the past they´re named differently, due to some incorrect translations. That info has now been corrected and it is out there the way it should be in order to preserve it correctly.

And whether or not it´ll become accepted by the BB Community.... time will tell.

Enjoy the Beasts!

This is the kind of work most other fandoms did on correcting older knowledge and translations ages ago, so it's quite the positive sight to see it occur now for Laser Beasts too. There were so many nonsensical names used in the fandom for the Laser Beasts and it's neat to see an update, particularly to something like Grand Wolf.

I think it'd be helpful to retain the transliterations along with the actual names (can bridge the gap as to why you don't use Zariganian or Shuru as names any longer) but otherwise, big thumbs up here.

Might be overcomplicating Sairon though. Did you try "Rhiron"?

Well that's interesting! I'm been curious about some of these names over the years. Sometimes it looks like you're directly translating Japanese into English instead of just copying the name, though- turning "Zariganian" into "Crayfishian" is just a translation.

When I did my "List of Beasts" I theorized that Rainbow Samu was named because of his similarity to Toucan Sam of the Froot Loops boxes. Froot Loops are definitely known in Japan. And "Sailon" is probably just the Japanese version of "Ceron", like Rhinoceron, yeah.

We did go down the Toucan Sam road. But from what research I could find is that it was not very popular. Plus, they now have Unicorn Fruit Loops now that replaced Toucan Sam. As for Rhinoceron, we considered that name to, but because of the Iron connection it was best to leave him Rhinociron. Since the Japanese love to play on names.

Ooh, MANTLE Frenzy- that makes sense! I'd thought the name was supposed to evoke "Mandrill" (even though the animal is clearly a Baboon). And I didn't realize which kind of Baboon he was, so I should re-edit my "Notes" section if I still can, lol.

"Grencats" meaning "Crimson" or something is a bit unexpected. I wonder if there's a cultural association with the color or flower that we're missing somewhere.

Thanks to White Leo & Beastformers for spearheading this project.  I was happy to be part of the small group debating each and every decision here; it was good fun.  The purpose of the project was to determine if a more accurate Japanese-to-English translation could be made (since there were never any officially released English names). It wasn't about finding "cooler" or more interesting names; so liking old vs new is a little beside the point.  Some of the new names we landed on represent very minor corrections OR yielded an even less interesting name than originally there (i.e. Rainbow Parrot or changing Skull Grotess to Skull Grotesque). The intention was to be as fact based and literal as possible, while trying to avoid any sort of creative interpretation, because we knew that would taint the outcome.  This was more of a science project than anything else.  Anyone can accept it or not, but it should be clear that this was the intention.  I think this was an interesting step forward for the community and again was glad to be part of it.

Interesting stuff. I'd have thought "Grin Reefer" was possibly a "Grim Reaper" joke based around name similarities or mistranslations. Salmomancer makes sense, too. I think "Grotess" was always a mistranslation in the first place too, yeah.
