Super Sentai Showcase #2: Super Sentai Soft Vinyl Collection

I had already caught the "Power Ranger bug" as a child and during my last trip to Asia it pretty much was cemented along with Super Sentai/Tokusatsu/Metal Heroes! Being a completist I started with the first Sentai/Ranger group and I am working my way upwards to the current team as of writing. I love Soft Vinyl figures and the Super Sentai line definitely has a lot to offer in that regard. So this will showcase and keep track of my collection :)

I apologize if I get "terms" & names wrong (despite being a Linguist, I am not super anal about terms and names etc)

25戦隊レッドヒーロー大集合 (25 Sentai Red Hero Large Group)

The Red Ranger (Jason) was my favorite Power Ranger growing up and when I saw this Red Hero Sentai set in Hong Kong at In's Point I could not resist! Although I waited around for at least 4 days until I pulled the trigger due to its size and price; eventually I wore the seller down and he let me have it for the price I was originally asking for.

This was the "gateway drug" I guess (haha); it has the first 25 Red Rangers from the Super Sentai series and although not vintage (released in 2013 I think) it does have that vintage "feel & look".

After travelling around, I eventually threw away the box and just repacked the Sofubi and poster it came with (once I reached the 4th country on my travels and bought more stuff it became harder and harder to find luggage space).

You can probably still find this set online but I definitely I didnt pay the 13,000 yen asking price I see on amazon Japan.

The Best 01 Set

Once I picked up the 25 figure Red Ranger Soft Vinyl set, I saw another six pack in Thailand (The Best 01) which had Soft Vinyl figures from the much later releases that are not included in the 25 figure set. It was a birthday gift! Same deal like the set I purchased in Hong Kong: I had to throw away the box unfortunately but I am the type of collector who likes to hold/feel things and and not just have them tucked away in the box. I only took a pic of the back of the box but not the front (hence the stock internet pic of the sealed pack). They actually display nicely along with the other figures and are the same size (a slight concern when I picked these up as new releases are either bigger than the 12cm Soft Vinyl figures or smaller at 9cm)

Your post just sent me down a Power Ranger rabbit hole.

FYI, here are the Red Rangers you're missing.

Curiously, there was never a later installment of the Super Sentai Best sets, so you'd have to look and see what might have been released between the 25th anniversary and Gokaiger to fill in your collection gaps. Not sure if the candy toy vinyls are in the same scale as these, could be useful as filler.

Much appreciated! If Hong Kong led me down the Power Ranger rabbit hole, Thailand drowned me in it! :)

This was great 411! Because I looked for other "Best" sets and only found the Kamer Rider or Ultraman sets .

The candy toy vinyls are 9cm (slightly smaller in scale) than the early vinyl figures; I did a bit of research and noticed that after 2001 or at least I didn't see any more 12 cm scale figure releases.

So I imagine that became the standard (9cm candy toy scale) along with the 17cm or bigger (circa) vinyl figures but nothing in that middle scale.

Not a big deal since they at least make those releases in relative uniform style/scale at least.

BANDAI Gosei Sentai Dairanger (五星戦隊ダイレンジャー) White Tigerzord with White Ranger Soft Vinyl (1993)

I honestly only bought this because of the White Ranger Vinyl figure (it's to scale with the other Sofubi releases of that time which is about 12 cm). I was surprised as to how cheap this can go for on yahoojapan (I bought mine for less than 1,000 yen + shipping). Mine was new and the scale of the Tigerzord is "display friendly" and it fits inside my IKEA Detolf glass shelf case (it's a stationary pose but you can move the arms and shoot a missle!). I am just waiting for my Dairanger Soft Vinyl figures to arrive in the mail so I can display them all together.

Super Sentai Team #01: Himitsu Sentai Gorenger Sofubi (1975-1977)

Everything has to start somewhere (Sentai, Super Sentai and Power Rangers) and Gorenger/Goranger was the first Sentai series!

My favorite character from this series is the Yellow Ranger (Kirenger) and it was an extremely successful and long running show (for a Sentai show).

I was so happy to complete this set and I found 4 of the Soft Vinyl figures on yahoojapan and the others in Hong Kong.

These Sofubi are available and can be found in the wild but the prices range depending on condition.

For some reason the Pink Ranger is difficult to find or at least at an affordable price. Which is why I feel like I ended up with a great deal on the yahoojapan set.

I bought a complete Green Ranger and Yellow Ranger in Hong Kong at In's Point (the Green Ranger from yahoojapan had a broken arm and the Yellow Ranger had some paint coming off).

Since I bought the Sofubi on yahoojapan before my Asia trip, it was nice finding the two upgrades during my trip (its interesting to note that this Sentai series had two Yellow Rangers; so I will add the double to the team).

You gotta love that vintage look!

Found on: yahoojapan & In's Point (Hong Kong)

Price: yahoojapan set was 3,200 yen (circa $29) + Shipping + Proxy Service Charge & the two found in Hong Kong: 150 HKD each (circa $19)

Unofficially Super Sentai Team #02: Ninja Captor (忍者キャプター 1976-1977)

Technically not in the family of Sentai (although it was considered a part of the Sentai family in the past), Ninja Captors was the 2nd installment in the Sentai series (it actually aired parallel to Goranger).

I love these Sofubi and I discovered them in Hong Kong, I was able to buy 6 members of the team (the team consists of seven members).

I acquired the last Red Ninja Captor (#01) I needed from Mandarake, now I have a complete collection.

They display well along with my other Sentai Sofubi and I am trying to collect the entire run all the way to the current series of each team.

I need a regular version of the Green Ninja Captor vinyl (various versions exist and the version I have is smaller than the normal core release).

Ninja Captor (忍者キャプター) PA-95 Captor-car/Popinica/Tin Car

Speaking of Ninja Captors...I found this in a flea market here in Germany! of all places! Its missing everything (boxes and small figures that went inside the car) but for 9 EUR I could not stop myself from buying it. I noticed that with vintage tin figures or anything from this material will rust if not properly looked after, so if anyone has some suggestions for what to avoid or upkeep please let me know!

This is what the packaging and a mint car looked like (apparently in 2017 a Mandarake auction listed this at 80,000 yen! no one bid on it LOL):

Super Sentai Team #02: J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai (ジャッカー電撃隊 1977)

I have been watching the Sentai series in order starting with Gorangers and I just finished J.A.K.Q. last week and I loved it! I was really crushing on Mitchi Love!

It's so camp but unfortunately it was not considered a huge hit in comparison to the previous Goranger. The Sofubi designs on these are awesome, I got my first soft vinyl (Spade Ace/Red Ranger) in Hong Kong and the rest from yahoojapan.

I ended up having to buy two lots in order to complete the series and the most difficult for me to acquire was Heart Queen/Pink Ranger (unfortunately mine has pen marks so until I upgrade my Sofubi this will do).

I might consider getting some vinyl and making them capes! I have a few doubles so if anyone wants to trade hit me up!

Super Sentai Team #03: Battle Fever J (バトルフィーバーJ 1979)

The first series to use "Super Sentai" and at some point labeled as the first (I think) until TOEI recognized Goranger and J.A.Q.K. as part of the Sentai continuity family.

So that would now make it the third Super Sentai team and what is interesting about this is the co-production of TOEI and Marvel.

With 52 episodes, it is pure 1970's cheese and I really dig it (February 3, 1979-January 26, 1980).

Some of the characters are partially inspired by the Marvel Comics characters like Captain America & the weirdest tidbit according to Wikipedia is how Battle Fever J is actually part of the Multiverse? (Earth-79203)

These Sofubi are not cheap but I got a good deal on a Lot from yahoojapan (mostly because Miss America was missing an arm and the vinyl scarf).
