I'm beginning to believe that this toy might be literally unidentifiable. I've tried nearly every site I could think of to find even a little bit of information, to absolutely no luck.

Somebody I used to know brought this and another figure (a purple and green dragon, which my dog chewed up and ruined 9 years ago) back from France around 2000-2001. That's all I know - there are no markings or anything else on it at all.

Did your friend go to Corsica?

The island of Corsica is a French territory in the Mediterranean Sea.  They are known for their sanglier (wild boars).

The sanglier is one of those regional animals that becomes a sort of mascot for tourism.

This could be a souvenir from Corsica.  Maybe related to a festival or anniversary.  Maybe.

Hope this helps.

Wow that's going to be a tough one.  Might be a fun online scavenger hunt!

Is it made of squishy foamy material?

The discordant colours and simple design make me think it's a character from a children's book. That is my best guess. It's a real mystery.

Size? Material?

Size - probably 4" - 6" across. As for material -I don't know how to determine such a thing myself, but probably plastic?

Whats that symbol on its back haunch?

Just a simple swirl-shape

Is it made of squishy foamy material?

No, it's pretty solid.

Very interesting. The only hole in that theory was it's companion figure - a sort of bipedal dragon. I'll look into the Corsica connection, though!

I sent your photo to the legendary vintage toy store in Paris called LULU-BERLU, asking if the could identify it.  About 20 hours later I got the response "Sorry, I have no idea."

Wow. Like it says in the thread title, I have almost come to believe that this toy is unidentifiable.

It predates that game by more than a few years. Terms I've searched on Google/Ebay/Etsy/etc have included - gargoyle, monster, tapestry monster, medieval monster, harlequin.

Is there any possibility it's a Cirque du Soleil toy? I'm not finding anything, but maybe someone might have some luck that way...

I actually explored that possibility a while back. Nothing.

Like I said in the OP, there was a second toy - a dragon (?) of roughly the same size (just bipedal). My dog chewed it up when we first got him, so i don't have it anymore.

I doubt this will help, but this is what I remember it looking like:

RiUvpNX.png

Like the "boar" it was multi-colored, I just don't remember the order or precisely which colors it was.

not a big help, but i've seen the exacly same figure in a flea market in Aisne (France). Aisne is a region near Ardennes, a region reputated for its sangliers. Maybe it could be a source for searching.

Well that's certainly interesting - I've never encountered anyone who's seen another in the wild. Unfortunately, I've been pursuing the "Boar" angle for a while, and nothing's turned up yet.

I actually thought I was on to something when I started looking into depictions of monsters in medieval texts, but still never found anything.

Have you tried doing searches with 'razorback' in?

I just tried a few myself and came up with nothing but you might have some more luck with that.

Im starting to think its not a boar. The horns are on the side of the head, and the feet aren't cloven, there's 3 toes.

If you ignore the horns it looks similar to a hyena.

Looked into it, but it doesn't seem to be related. Thanks for the suggestion!

Somebody over on Reddit was convinced that this was made by B. Toys, the kid's toys brand of Battat. I've looked into it, however, and still can't find anything.
