I could use the help of the kinkeshi experts here. I have various types, but I know very little about the different varieties and sets of kinkeshi that were released. I'm just curious to learn more about the different types that were made, when, and which of these are which. Underneath the pics I've detailed what markings they all have.

TOP ROW:

- Red Sunshine: no markings that I can see

- Flesh robot guy: B in circle, C in circle, Y/S - NT, 24

MIDDLE ROW

- Green guy: C in circle, Y/S NT

- Little red guy: C in circle, Y/S - NT

- Little flesh guy: C in circle, Y/S - NT, B

- Blue guy: writing on back is faded so I can't even make it out. Maybe not even a kinkeshi?

- Silver guy: I thought it was a bootleg at first, but it has the Y/S - NT with a B in a circle (see second pic). Maybe a bootleg regardless?

BOTTOM ROW:

- All have markings treated the same way so I assume they're from the same set. C in circle, Y-S.N.T., P in circle

The B in a circle stands for Bandai, which means they were made by that company and is probably one of the original keshi eraser figures.  Does your silver figure feel like it has been painted at all? It really looks spray painted to me...I know that there are smaller silver gumball machine bootlegs of muscles but they wouldn't be marked correctly. AS far as the rest I think the different letter in the circle is significant, just like the B stood for Bandai. First letter of the company or country that made them. The bottom row figures sound like they are the rubber eraser style muscles that came out as well as the plastic ones.  I'm sure someone here can verify that and give it the proper name. I might be completely off base here though. I don't know nearly as much as most muscle collectors here.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I am pretty sure B is Bandai and P is Popy, and maybe C is just the copyright symbol. But beyond that I know next to nothing about the various releases.

I initially had the same thought about the silver figure. But after inspecting it really closely, I am almost sure it's silver rubber with either discoloration or a blackish wash on bits of it. I got it in a bucket full of various keshi at a convention. There didn't look to be anything else silver or bootleg-like in the bucket. I have a bunch of metallic vending bootlegs, but as you mentioned, they don't have the regular markings like this guy does.

Thanks. This has probably been discussed before but I'm wondering if there's an archive or checklist of that Popy set. I like the style of the sculpts.

Yeah, I grabbed the silver figure out of the bin right away. It was like the odd duck in a sea of normal kinkeshi colors.

Man, cut a sliver off that sucker's foot or something.  It looks like paint to me.  Or maybe it is dyed but has paint added to the surface.  Dye will seep deeper than paint, but I think you could inconspicuously cut it somehow to verify.  I am no expert, but surely someone here would know the provenance of a silver MUSCLE.  Maybe it is that bootleg line called Exogini?

Here is an Exogini pic, does it look like this?

No, mine is not straight silver like that, but has a more two-tone look. Plus I think Exogini are firmer and this guy is very rubbery.

Tried soaking and scrubbing in hot soapy water and he came out looking pretty much the same. He had a bit of flashing on the bottom of his foot so I snipped a piece of that off. Rubber definitely looks like a metallic gray, although there could be a bit of paint on it too which causes the two-tone effect. I'm not going to go any deeper than that because I don't want to damage it.

I've got a silver/bronze-ish MUSCLE that I've always believed was a vending machine booty...

And it was solid, not painted.

Bootlegs come in many varieties, many of which still bear the trade markings. In fact, it tends to be more common among the lower quality/hastily reproduced bootlegs. Obscuring or replacing any of the figure's features takes some effort, and it is not uncommon for that aspect to be ignored by a bootleg manufacturer.

This, of course, applies to bootlegs cast in any material, metallic rubber not excluded:

Attached File  IMG_0952.JPG   90.93K   2 downloads

Bearing that in mind, and noting the outward bowing of the feet, I would conclude that fkro6784's silver Akuma Shogun is probably a bootleg, and a pretty cool one at that!

As far as identifying different types of legitimate Kinkeshi, this thread where Soupie compiled some great information regarding the most common Kinkeshi types is a good place to start.

Remember, though, that official Kinkeshi releases are as varied in their size, shape, material, and so on, as bootlegs are varied in their levels of quality. There are probably just as many undocumented types of Kin figures as there are those that are well known.

Great info, fuzzbuster. Thanks!

Soupie's post is very helpful. Unfortunately, most of the links are dead now (like the Naochin site). But based on the info in the post, I can see that I've got a Chibi, a 1991 series figure, and I think the bottom 5 are from the standard Popy series. I think the green one in the middle might be from the regular/original kinkeshi set. Still unsure about the larger two on top and the blue guy.

I never realized just how many different kinkeshi sets there were.
