For me, it was Gegege no Kitaro. I had been aware of it for a while, but it was just kind of in the back of my mind.

Recently I purchased a set of NOS Lucky Yuckies on ebay, and it kind of ignited my interest in the characters.

I've always loved folklore, and am familiar with Yokai lore, so I always knew Gegege no Kitaro would appeal to me, so I sought out the latest anime iteration, and now I'm hooked.

Now I want to read the original Manga. I need to try to find a source with English translations.

I mean, I never would have discovered Kinnikuman if it wasn't for my love of M.U.S.C.L.E.

Good point, and same.

My discovery that MUSCLE = Kinnikuman only strengthened my love. Knowing that these guys have names and backstories only made me love them more.

Gegege No Kitaro, Spiral Zone, Gormiti, Fistful of Power, etc. etc.

Way too many to list.

I love kinnikuman too and wouldn't have found my way to that without my interest in muscle and this forum. The surprise find for me was fist of the north star though. I came across kenshiro deka and fell in love with the Mad Max look.

I'm friends with one of the artists on FotNS

That's awesome. I haven't read any of the manga and to be honest have only gotten to watch the first 5 or 6 episodes of the original anime but the design of the characters is great. I wish I had more time to delve in at the moment but sheltering with kids is less of a vacation and more of a full time job.

I guess just like others, collecting Muscle introduced me to Kinnikuman. I kind of knew about it before because of Shonen Jump manga. But didn't get into reading it. Being here though got me interested in knowledge of other lines I don't collect. I love reading about rare figures and their story of how they're so rare.

That's not one of my usual areas of expertise, but I also saw, if you want the legal route, that a bunch of classic Kitaro is in-print in English in the US already.

I'd definitely prefer legal over shady. Have a link to where I can buy it?

Going back to the original question again, my recent toy identification thread sent me down a number of rabbit holes and introduced me to this weird old show called Star Fleet (original Japanese title X-Bomber). It's basically Thunderbirds in Japan, and it's bizarrely delightful. I found the first episode on dailymotion. Maybe the strangest thing about it - the theme song is performed by Brian May (from Queen) and features guitar by Eddie Van Halen.

Great question. Gegege no Kitaro got me. It was a logical step from mimp.
These guys from jojos bizzare adventure got me into the anime. Still need to complete my set some day
http://atmarkjojo.or...ives/16490.html
And this set of one piece got me into the anime. Otherwise I might have never given it a shot after that horrible 4kids intro.

Those One Piece figures are cool!

and I always wished MiMP had delved more into Japanese folklore. I always thought a Kappa was a logical choice.

You should be able to find translated Gegege no Kitaro at any reputable comic shop or bookseller, under "Kitaro".

I love those One Piece Amekore figures, and have been quietly collecting them for years.

For me, LRG turned me on to Body Wars. I actually own zero BW stuff, but am always happy whenever I see people posting their stuff.

Oh yeah, I discovered Ultraman monsters through bootleg vending toys as a kid, though even without those I'd have probably fallen in love whenever I saw its many kaiju.

And yeah, the current 2017-2020 Kitaro is honestly the best written of its many series. It just ended, but with a very hefty number of episodes to binge. It's also the first one made after the creator's passing, but I feel like it's made by people who deeply understood his vision. He actually complained about how his bosses made him tone down Kitaro's horror aspects as well as his anti-war, anti-racism messages, but 2017 Kitaro dives into both a very great deal and I think he'd be very happy :) .......though good old Rat-man/Nezumiotoko is such a bastard in this one it gets hard to believe they still hang out with him. I'm just glad they do because he keeps being funny, too.

To this day it baffles me that M.U.S.C.L.E sold as well as it did, at least briefly, but nobody decided to bring the cartoon over to give it a big boost at the time. I guess the licensing was on a shoestring budget to begin with.
