Hey guys

I wasn't sure where to post this but I thought I'd at least post it here where I know people I want to read it could potentially read it.

Does anyone clean their figures if they receive them from a third party and not straight from the pack?

What chemicals do people use?

For cleaning FOPS, I'd be really careful with 99% Isopropyl alcohol because I accidentally removed paint from a different toy before with that...

I use Windex to get rid of scum on some things but mainly goop from labels on video game cartridges.

I've tended to use these lens wipes to clean paperback books and it just "appears" to remove scum with damaging anything.

I 'm trying to imagine just literally bathing MIMPs or other non-painted figures in something.  Mild dish detergent?

Perhaps I'm destroying all my stuff.  I'm just imagining the plastics reacting with different chemicals and me not realizing it.

Any thoughts?

No need to mess about - I use hand wash in warm water, with a toothbrush. I've cleaned everything with that method, from rubber MIMP to hard plastic MUSCLE.

For mono minis I do a few minutes in a hot water bath with dish detergent followed by a toothbrush scrub, then a final rinse under the faucet to make sure all the soap is off. I usually do this with used figures even if they don't look dirty. You do have to be careful with stuff that's painted, though. Most of it can withstand this method, but the paint on some stuff comes off pretty easily.

The only times this doesn't work is if the rubber/plastic has discoloration or if the figures are extremely filthy. I got a MIMP lot from France once that looked like it was stored in mud for 20 years. Had to bust out a heavy duty scraper brush and toothpicks to clean those.

Im glad you didnt ask about cleaning fop.. cause the yellowish colour transform on cristal figures is permanent, wich sucks. I have lot of old FoP figs that have turned that way.

Well its not really yellowish but... well other collectors know what i mean

Yes, it looks like they lived with a chain smoker for several years, and apparently never comes off.
I always assumed that it was just the plastic degrading.

I use Orange Goop and a toothbrush.  It has a very tiny amount of pumice which helps a lot at removing grime and light paint transfer from other toys.  It will not chemically remove paint, I am talking about the abrasion from the pumice.  I find that most common soaps and detergents do not clean nearly as well and almost always leave a slight film that dries white -- despite thorough rinsing.  Plus Orange Goop smells nice.

From the manufacturer:

This heavy duty yet gentle hand cleaner contains natural citrus extracts, jojoba oil and pumice to leave your hands clean and smelling fresh! The hand cleaner removes grease, mud, plaster, paint, dirt, grime and more. This Goop hand cleaner is the eco-friendly way to keep hands clean on the job.

Awesome!  Thanks for all the replies!!

Not sure if I would risk a tooth brush unless it was very, VERY soft.

Also, I will never use Goo Gone, that stuff gives me a headache and leaves a weird greasy feel... lol

Of course don't do anything to your stuff you're not comfortable with, but for what it's worth I've scrubbed the hell out of MIMP with a hard bristle dish brush trying to get embedded dirt off, and it's never done a bit of harm to any. :)

I will definitely say I used a tooth brush on some VERY gummed up WWF giant rubber wrestlers back in the day... those were so gross... hahaha
