Monster 500

Number of figures: 10
Year released: 2013
Produced by: Creata (USA)
Distributed by: Toys R Us
Found at: Toys R Us
Package type: single packs, 3 packs
Price: $6 each at retail
Size: 2 x 2 x 1.5 inches (approximate)
Material: slightly pliable plastic glued to die-cast metal vehicles
Paint: bold and detailed
Tagline: "They're diabolically designed!"
Website: www.monster500.com

Backstory: The time: Just after the Zombie Apocalypse. The world: desolate, toxic. It’s a world Monsters now have to themselves. No humans left to scare. No reason left to hide. No purpose, except to do what they love best – to race. It’s in their blood, no matter what color that blood happens to be. Who will finish first? Who will finish dead last?

I found these to be one of the most interesting toylines of 2013 for several reasons.

First of all, the Monster 500 sculpts are top-notch.  These are really creative takes on iconic monsters and creatures.  We easily recognize them all: Zombie, vampire, werewolf, alien, bigfoot, mutant crocodile, crazy clown, Leatherface-style chainsaw killer, Frankenstein-style monster, and Jekyll & Hyde-style mad scientist. The depictions are extremely reminiscent of Ed Roth and his hot-rod characters such as Rat Fink. The figures are nicely designed, very detailed, and painted exceptionally well.

Second, the Monster 500 packaging and marketing material is superb.  Each figure comes with a standard-sized collector's card.  The card features the character's name, tagline, and brief bio.  You can tell that a lot of creativity went into the artwork and copy.  Including a collector's card is such a simple and effective gimmick.  It gives the purchaser (potential fan) a chance to receive exclusive information and artwork, and an immediate and physical means to track their collection.  I always advocate including specific character-based collector's cards with a toyline.  Making them standard-sized (2.5 by 3.5 inches) or smaller is important, so people can keep them in readily-available sleeves or pages.  In this case, the cards also have codes that can be used to access content in their tie-in App game -- another winning toy gimmick.

Overall, the packaging emulates the successful Skylanders.  Aside from the card, the code, and the game tie-in, the bubble-card packaging is nearly identical to that of the Skylanders.  Further, also like Skylanders, some of the figures are available in 3-packs.  There is no real reason for the 3-packs since all the figures in them are also available in single packs, nor is there any cost advantage to buying the 3-packs.  You could by two different 3-packs plus 4 singles, or 10 singles to end up with the full set of 10 figures.

As another nod to the Skylanders, there are rare "chaser" versions to be found.  I am a little embarrassed to admit that I just discovered this fact.  Simply put, I've never found a chaser variant by chance, there is no message on the packaging suggesting we look for the variants, and I've never before visited their website to find out about their existence.  Creating rare variants to "chase" is a very popular gimmick. Many toy companies overuse this gimmick to a level of gluttony that simply insults their consumers. I rather like Creata's take on it.  First, they went the "secret chase" route by not putting text and images all over their packaging insisting that you find all the rare versions. Second, as their website informs, each figure has one and only one chaser version. Third, most of the chase variants are truly unique involving distinct plastic instead of some silly re-paint.  These are the "chasers" produced:

Translucent Black: Lead Foot and Captain Heinous
Translucent Green: Evil Clownevil and Turbo Chainsaw Maverick
Translucent Red: Crocpot and Werewolf Blitzer
Glow-In-The Dark: Zoom Zombie and Drac Attack
Repaint plus Silver Vehicle: Flattop Frank and Dr. Jerkyl and Mr. Ride

Creata has not disclosed how many have been made of each "chaser."

Additionally, four of the ten figures were released in much larger sizes.  These toys feature buttons that activate lights and sounds. Of the four they made in this size, I was only interested in Crocpot. Here is a size comparison:

Finally, here is artwork for the Series 2 figures that will HOPEFULLY see store shelves in 2015!!![/size]

Nice review - I haven't been buying much new stuff.  Or old stuff for that matter... but man it's tough to resist these when I see them at Toys R Us.  THey look top notch all the way around, and I'm not one for Hot Rod stuff but these sculpts are superb.  If I remember correctly the paysets (Toxic Terror?) are equally well done.

Thanks for sharing!

There are two playsets available and while they look interesting, I never went for either one because they do not come with exclusive figures. I consider this a marketing flaw to have included figures yet NOT included exclusive figures (they DO come with standard figures).

One of the main reasons I wanted to do this review is because Monster 500 figures are now on clearance....

1-packs are $2 and 3-packs are $6!

Playsets and the larger figures are on clearance at a similar percentage, like 70%.

If anyone comes across a "chaser" figure still in their store, send it my way.   :)

For real.

Steve

I went reading up on them after reading your review... I saw that a lot of them are on clearance.  The Croc mini fig seems to go for a slight premium.

I don't really get the whole chaser thing... so they are just randomly packed that way BUT you can see what your getting?  Like the opposite of a Trash Pack or Mutant Mania where it's sealed and you don't know what you get until you open it.  These seem to have the chase figure front and center!

I saw a glow in the dark zombie one that looked cool.

Nice review. I'll be on the lookout for the two glow-in-the-dark chase figures if they ever see a release in Canada.

Would make great pieces for a Mario Kart style boardgame of some kind.

On a semi-related note, Creata, the producer of this line, recently trademarked the word "POG".

What does it mean? Place your bets.

I understand the desire to release the classic monsters in Series 1, but Series 2 has more personal favorites.  I have always liked mutant anthropomorphic animal creatures better than monsters that derive from humans.  Growing up with Battle Beasts will do that, I suppose.

My two favorites from Series 1 are Captain Heinous and Crocpot.

My favorites from Series 2 are Dr Fly By and the Creature from the Track Lagoon.  Love Car Shark and Lock Mess Maniac too.

I also really love the robot Scream Punk!

Including a killer clown, a psycho kid, and the Turbo Chainsaw Maverick really gives a thoughtfulness (and thoroughness) to this line.

I really, really hope Series 2 finally makes it.  We'll see.

I really hope we see series 2 but I doubt it - TRU employees have been telling me its canceled.

Meh.

I found Monster 500 in the UK today! I'm pretty sure they were never released here, however the die cast vehicles have made it to the clearance shop Poundworld :)

I picked up all 10, superbly detailed little toys. I suppose it's too much to hope that any of the larger toys will show up too.

I can trade the larger sound-and-light versions for the chasers!

For real though, look for those Chaser variants.  They are all available in 1-packs.  I personally can offer about $10 each in trade credit.  These are the variants to look for:

Solid Black: Lead Foot and Captain Heinous
Translucent Green: Evil Clownevil and Turbo Chainsaw Maverick
Translucent Red: Crocpot and Werewolf Blitzer
Glow-in-the-Dark: Zoom Zombie and Drac Attack
Repaint with Silver Vehicle: Flattop Frank and Dr. Jerkyl and Mr. Ride

Someone in Virginia is offering the whole set for $169.  This is the only picture provided and there is no remark as to how it was assembled.  It just seems odd, as if they were given (or won or bought) the whole set at once in a factory sealed box.  Anyway, regardless, here is the picture:

I know about the chase variants. If I found any, I certainly wouldn't be trading them away. However, my experience of clearance stock is that chase figures never ever make it that far.

Single packs at Poundworld? I'll have to have a look for the four missing from the three packs I found the other week at one of their multi price outlets (£3 a pack).

Ah, they have a multi-price place here too, they used to be called "Discount UK" I think but now it's "Poundworld Extra". I went in there but didn't think to check the £1+ section, they never usually have anything good in there.

BTW, did you see they had Zombie Zity swobblerz too? Also 12 packs of the mini Cut the Rope figures (on the same scale as Squinkies). I also saw a whole bundle of Combat of Giants: Dragons figures but I already have loads of those. Poundworld has been better than Poundland and Home Bargains lately.

Could someone please get me the Zombie Zity Zwoblerz?

I have 7/12 and I am missing 5/12.

I wrote a huge review with photos of the ones that I have here:

http://letyourtoysli...01_archive.html

I paid an arm and a leg to import the ones that I have from Germany.

I also collect the Cut-the-Rope Nommies.

Is there nothing you guys want from the US?

I'll give you a shout if I'm going to be near another branch Steve, but it'll be next week at least. I'm way out in the sticks and rotaed on this weekend. With those Zity figures at that price the biggest part of the cost will likely be getting them to you.

I found them in Poundland UK yesterday - all except Crocpot and Captain Heinous - someone suggested these might be rarer? Might have to look on Amazon or Ebay.

Website states waves 3 and 4 due in Fall 2015 so there has to be a chance right??? Maybe Halloween - fingers crossed!!

Just poking around in older posts... just reminded me how much I love this series.  One of the BEST modern toys series in recent years in my humble opinion.  GREAT all the way around.
