Thanks, Draznar! I think my biggest hurdle right now is patience. I'm used to working so fast in animation that my instincts are always to say "That's good enough, move on", so I'm learning to slow down a bit and enjoy the process.

That's just pretty much how he runs tutorials. Not too many people sign up, but the ones that do never forget.

While I wait for my new lid gasket on my pressure pot, I thought I'd try my hand at sculpting something way too small. This thing is crazy... But oddly fun and relaxing. It's definitely hard to work fast, every move has to be super deliberate or you're screwed. Still learning.

New guy: Mega Watt (or some other such electricity-themed name. This guy was a beast and made me realize I REALLY need to learn to use Apoxy so I can work on sections at a time without smushing everything as I work on the character.
 

Oh wow, I really like the look of this one, especially the face design! I hope he's on the short list when you start cranking these guys out!

Yeah, I think he's next up in line after the mohawk mercenary. I'm STILL waiting on the missing part from my pressure pot before I can get started and it is driving me NUTS!!! I think Mega Watt is my favorite character I've made so far... probably cause he looks like a Mega Man boss.

I cast my first figure today! I'm still working out the kinks on my pressure pot, keeping it full pressure throughout the process (no leaks though), but overall, I'm happy! Gonna try and cast another one tomorrow. I did notice one strange thing though... Lots of weird little "balls" jutting out from random spots on the figure (you can see some in the close-up on the bottom). Maybe it's the result of a bad mold, or the pressure dips during casting. Pressure cure the molds, same pressure as casting.

Oh, yeah... That makes a lot of sense. So I'm assuming this mold is kind of shot then... Bummer. But I'm still learning, so I'll chalk it up to gaining experience.

The balls are just air bubbles in the mold - degassing the rubber after you've mixed it helps, but if you don't have access to a vacuum bin then careful stirring, a slow pour and pressure curing (as Imp said) will help mitigate bubbles to some degree.

I molded a new sculpt yesterday and made a couple of casts of him today and I'm really happy with how he turned out! He's a little shiny for what I want in the future, maybe I need a different kind of rubber or some mix in matte finish stuff (I dunno...) but a far better result in this one than the last character. Now I need to get back to sculpting and see what character I want to do next.

Nice one, man.  Looks like a big boy, as well, unless you have tiny girly hands.    A Mega Man boss from a 2D indie game!  

 

 

Not to presume that my suggestions mean jack shit, but how about a monster next time around?

Yeah, he's big, about the size of a SuperHero Squad or Galactic Hero figure...maybe a touch taller cause of the tall head. I've got a couple monsters in line, one that I'm sculpting now; if I like how he turns out, I'm sure he'll be next.

Yeah, I have a few monster sketches I've done that I think will be turned into sculpts. But now after making some casts, I'm starting to see that I need to make some tiny figures that I can use all my leftover rubber in so it doesn't go to waste!
