If you didn't notice, they're using characters from their upcoming Amibo (sp?) toy-line. I think it's kind of a shitty shoe-in, but at the same time I don't find myself caring much beyond that.
My wife is already excited to buy it all, for bettter or worse.
Did you see the free DLC that is either out or coming out? It's a Mercedes or something like that.

I was just looking at these yesterday, had a Mario Kart hang out at my buds house. The Mercedes update is kinda weird, but more vehicles the better i guess.

It's my understanding the Mercedes thing was part of an ad campaign that they did in Japan... And people were fussing that they weren't getting the DLC over here so they eventually brought it over. If you can find it online on youtube there are some pretty bizarre Mercedes/Mario kart commercials.
Anyhow - it's kinda dumb... But like Eric said the more cars the better I guess.
Draz - I still haven't reLly seen much about how the toy line is going to ad on... Other than glorified skins. But the DLC packs themselves look pretty robust. I think it's smart to do a sky landers sort of toy line for Nintendo, I'm not particularly excited about it myself but it makes sense. Better be more exciting than that halfed-ass Pokemon brawl BS they did with the gamestop exclusive toys. That was super lame.
Subway - for all the talk about the DLC I haven't heard anything about any additional or more importantly original battle levels.
