Well, in my book, as far as complaining about the voice acting: Go to the well, and go often.

4 Kids also butchered the One Piece cartoon. My argument is, if you think a cartoon isn't going to strike well with kids... Don't try to sell it to kids. I do think that was the issue with One Piece, but not with UM.

You're right! Over on the AX forums back in 2011, one of the topics was the 4Kids bankruptcy and just about everybody who had wrote on that specific topic pretty much had nothing good to say about 4Kids. And there was someone who said they tarnished One Piece.

And someone posted this skit

The racist ass choices made for the "wild card" Preliminary match for the chojin crown olympics.

**My bad, i hadnt read the OP, just went off the title. The show went on for at least 20 episodes after that incident.

-From what Ive heard the Nesei flunked in Japan. The show only even went as long as it did becuase of popularity over here.

Its amazing it even did considering it was up against Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. who were and still are Colossal to kids.

I know this is a dread topic and simiforum necromancy, but I thought they did a decent job of converting a hard sell into something people do still remember.  I wish they w ould release the complete series on DVD, myself, but it just doesn't have enough popularity.

The voice acting I thought was fine.  The renaming and reconcepting was fine and understandable for most characters, other than Geronimo getting renamed to Beatlebomb.  The humor was absolutely hilarious and filled with adult references.

The small plot changes like Minch's death was crappy, but also understandable.  They had to keep it in line with what Fox would allow, and there's a lot of regulations as to what can be done on a Saturday Morning television show in the United States.

All in all, I'm just disappointed it didn't get another season, or at least a nice boxed set of all the seasons.  I still havn't seen the first half of the third season, and that ain't cool.

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

Here's what I believe/think of what went wrong in the Nisei show:

1) Voice acting was fine, dialogues were fine and appropriate for children. I am a serious person that doesn't get into children's jokes much.

2) Storyline was pretty suckish…. :/ I mean the beginning was great, but where it went wrong was where Checkmate's spotlight was in the show for like 4 episodes or so, and I love checkmate myself, but I thought that it was too damn long episodes for children to keep track of. Then after that, the storyline picked up better again, then it went down and up and down, and so on.

3) Nobody knew the history and stories behind the old characters and what they were talking about when they talked about the past of their matches and relationships together. So how is everybody supposed to pick-up a new story? >:/ Like, what the heck?

4) I know it was a kid's show, but blood should've been shown in here (if they're able to show blood in Naruto that was aired on Cartoon Network and etc., why not show blood in Ultimate Muscle too?) It would've been more realistic and amusing.

5) Kid Muscle ALWAYS WINS…. -_-' He should've went down when Checkmate, Eskara/Mars, and Kevin more brutally beating him to death.

6)There was no creativity in the storyline. I see too much resemblance of stories between the Old Shows and the New Shows. I'm not saying the story lines are the alike, but how the plot is laid out is too much alike… :/

Overall:

I like the Old Shows ALOT better than the new. They should do remake of it! Like how they did it with DragonBall: Battle of the Gods or whatever it was called. I would definitely LOVE to watch it!

Plus, I remembered how popular Ultimate Muscle was back when I was about 5-10 years or so. I actually had a crush on Kid Muscle (to this day I don't like him due to the fact that he sucks and he's a crybaby) when I was a little girl, I'd draw pictures of him and etc.

They SHOULD'VE aired the old Kinnikuman shows in America back in the 80s too…. :/ That way, people would finally know what's going on and how the characters were and etc. But sadly they didn't because of Brocken Jr's association with Nazism…. :'/ That'll always be a killer to me that the old Kinnikuman was never aired back then…. not to mention, that Kinnikuman itself will never go back to its glory days here in the US… (NOOOOOOO!!!!) *sigh and shrugs* Oh well! Guess I'll still have to hunt for old Kinnikuman shows here on the Internet… :/

Naruto was shown on a different channel at a later timeslot. The blood was also initially censored.

Ultimate Muscle was a Saturday morning show in a slot where kids 10 and younger would have been watching. Even if 4Kids relaxed their really dumb censorship practices, it still wouldn't have been acceptable for there to have been blood.

you know despite them being censorship happy they let a few adult jokes fly in there dubs

heres some examples:

Pokémon: Brock: *looks at a picture of a girl* she can violate my rights anytime!

Ultimate Muscle: Terry Kenyon: how would you like a 500 pound walrus pounding at yer prostate?

there was also Kid Muscles 3 way joke but I wont write it

You also forgot 'Dik Dik Van Dik', but it's also a lot easier to slip some innuendo in the writing than having a character vomit blood everywhere.

Honestly, I thought Ultimate Muscle was great. It's hilarious, the dub doesn't take itself too seriously, and I really enjoy how they poke fun at everything. That's honestly why it did better than the Nisei anime in Japan; from the raws I've seen, it tried to play things straight and take itself semi-seriously, which really didn't hold up against other shounen anime at the time like Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto. The 4Kids dub pretty much embraced the craziness and even cranked it up a notch.

You have to also consider that the Nisei manga and Nisei anime were targeted to two totally different audiences in Japan. The manga was clearly meant for adults since it was published through Weekly Playboy and literally between pages of half-naked and naked women, while anime Nisei was pretty much stripped of anything risque and rewritten for younger children. I have a feeling that 4Kids probably would have continued to pay Toei to produce more seasons, if not for the fact that the next arc featured a character that's heavily based on Hindu mythology, and the Tag Team arc had just started. It really does suck that they changed the winner of the anime to Mantaro instead of Kevin Mask, but honestly, if they had the main character lose horribly and just ended it that way, a lot of kids would probably be upset because they wouldn't know about the manga.

That also brings me to my second point about the localization of the manga: the reason why it didn't do so well is that they tried to market it to the same audience as the anime (kids) while the source material was for a totally different age group (adults who were Kinnikuman fans as kids). You can see in the first few volumes where they're trying to tone down and edit a lot of the more adult humor and situations out, and then they sort of give up in the middle and Mantaro's boner is everywhere. It just didn't mesh well and once the anime ended, interest in the manga pretty much died out.

In the end, I think the problem is that a lot of fans of Ultimate Muscle were kids who either grew up and lost interest in anime, didn't realize that the story continued on, or just plain forgot about it. That, and I think a lot of people look at the 4Kids label and are turned off immediately - which is a shame, because this is honestly their best localization.

That said, I think Yude was actually pleasantly surprised at how popular the anime was in the states (even though they didn't get some of the censorship, like removing Meat's markings) and I thought it was a nice shout-out to the American fanbase when he had Mantaro and the others wearing the ULTIMATE MUSCLE armbands.

I agree with everything u said Wyndia although Dik Dik Van Dik was a reference to a Dik Dik which is a type of Gazelle and also a reference to Dick Van Dyke I didn't actually care for the boner jokes minus the one where Mantarou "saved" Roxanne from that one prelim game ikeman made them play
