Humanoid Figure, 2" tall, red/silver (Hasbro Air Raiders style)

Best Answer replicant01 , 30 August 2017 - 04:07 PM

Breakthrough!  Found this awesome page of a planned series 2 of Air Raiders (1988), looks like the figure I have would have been a new squad leader.  Man, now I want to see the rest of these figures!

Well done replicant01, sharp eyes & good intuition; I would not have known what those were and likely passed if I saw the auction. I acquired the resin guys on eBay too, back in 1999. All were separate auctions with the resin along with the production counterpart (so that's where my first Emperor and Baron came from. Placed a bid of $80.00 on each but won them all at the opening bid (I forget but it was cheap) as nobody seemed to be watching.

Nice score then Balok!  I was focused mainly on GI Joe auctions back then, & came out with some nice deals in those early days.  Somewhere along the way I broadened my collecting goals to include Air Raiders.  I've built up a formidable collection since then.  Before these 2 guys, my most impressive pieces were 7 sets of the mail-in figures (actually have less of the Man-o-War pilot), the mail-in Airlandia map, & a sealed in open box Man-o-War.  Also have an AR box artwork proof somewhere.  Will have to pull everything out & take pics one day.  I do have an old outdated thread in the Collection Pics subcategory here that shows the figures I had at that point, acquired a few more since then:

Yeah, I'm super sad that this line didn't become a reality either. Even if these was more on the rare side like the Manowar and Emperor; just to have a chance to own them would be fantastic. I've contemplated seeing if some sort of 3D printing could be done based off the photos but haven't had the time to research it.

And I remember that ebay listing! I didn't bid because I didn't want yet another Thunderclaw. Congrats!

I shudder to think how many cool things the seller (or his parents) threw away over the years.

You & I think alike Jack; Would love to find better quality pics of these figures & attempt to create these figures myself.  A few are obviously repaints of existing figures so those wouldn't be difficult to mold/cast.  My ultimate dream would be for another company to acquire the rights from Hasbro if they won't do anything further & pick up where they left off, maybe with a Kickstarter type event for funding.  I'd be happy with just the figures & Air Refinery, if possible.

Oh, & thanks for your disinterest in owning another Thunderclaw :D  I too wondered what else this guy may have had at one time or another as a kid.  Hell he may have had the rest of the figures from this series for all we know!

Just to keep sharing; I stumbled across an old auction from 2010 that had some neat stuff (No, I didn't win this). Some characters they obviously never got around to making and some variant designs of the Manowar and Dragonwind. The link also has some scripts and notes from the Sunbow cartoon.

https://comics.ha.co...sAuction-120115

One of those figure sketches looks to be one of the Inhumanoids characters, so I wonder if the top 2 figure sketches are from that line?  Either way the AR series 2 figure pics are too distant to make out much detail, so the figure sketches may indeed by AR related.

Is that even possible? I know Games Workshop has leased stuff to other companies to produce but has Hasbro ever done that? Oh the possibilities...

My short term plan is to do some molds of my own. I found some web videos showing how to do quick molds with Blue Stuff. I took apart the good and bad AR foot soldiers so now I can make body part molds and swop out the heads, arms, etc., paint them and make a new and different guy. I may even use some StarCom guys to get a different look since they're the same size. If I'm feeling very confident, I may sculpt my own but that small size seems daunting.

After that, I may look into the cost of 3D printing the second series guys. I can teach myself the software, it's the cost of printing that doesn't seem worth it right now.

Suuure, rub it in. ;) At the very least, he might have had the other squad members that these lieutenants(?) were in command of. Man, I hope not, to think of that waste... I assume you asked him if he had anything else and he said no?

Yeah, I was not sure about the two on the right. I wish they had posted all the pics!

By the way, what are your thoughts on the series two guys? It seems like overall there were two new soldier types and two new officer types for each side and then a whole bunch of repaints.

Very cool Air Raiders info replicant01 & jack.aubrey ! Thanks for firing up the Air Raiders convo, I know many who love the figs as extra soldiers for Starcom and other playsets.
Your multiples of the mail-away sets are an incredible treasure replicant01, only acquired individual figs over time myself and never the map. Speaking of the mail-aways, have you ever noticed a color difference between your Emperor figs? My two examples seem to have different amounts of metallic filler in the plastic (pics below):

Loved that series 2 pic you posted. One group looks like they might be the Emperors Guard, and some of the subtle changes in the good guys (black armored squad leader) look great.
Just imagine if series 2 had reached stores, or at least the figures had turned up in quantities similar to series 1; this would have changed the toy landscape for quite a few. Incredibly detailed sculpts that I still marvel at with enough obscurity to allow your imagination to work out who/what these guys are; build your own worlds.

See attached pic, I say box proof, it may just be packaging artwork.  Looks to be a hi-res scan/print of the original artwork.   Very vibrant & detailed in person.  I have plans to frame it one day.  Purchased a couple years back from the same seller you posted the new Ebay auction from.

Regarding licensing, I'm not sure how that all works out.  I figured (likely incorrectly) that Hasbro may decide to sell the rights of the line to someone else.  An easier path might be to just make them identical to AR style figures & just not use the name / concept to avoid legal issues.  I know guys who use actual vintage GI Joe molds to make bootleg figures, but Hasbro doesn't seem too bothered with it, so who knows.

There are many projects I have in mind once 3D scanning \ printing technology improves quality-wise, expanding on this line being one of them.  If you do begin work on some in the meantime, keep us posted!

I did indeed check back with the seller, but he has not responded.  I figured he doesn't check his messages during inactive times on Ebay.

Series 2 breakdown (attempt) looks to have obviously a repaint of the S1 soldiers (per faction), 2 new squad captains with the third being a S2 repaint (per faction), & two new squad soldiers (per faction).  And its hard to tell from the pics but the Power Axe & GASP vehicles may each have yet another new figure; but if they followed the same formula from S1, these figures would be repainted as squad captains (likely the ones with the S1 repaint soldiers).  So I'll go with that scenario: (2) S1 repaints, (8) S2 figures, & (4) S2 repaints = 14 new figures!  That would have been amazing!  I'm still happily buying the 12 S1 figures in multiple quantities, imagine having another 14 to choose from!

Yeah it seems like all mine look identical in color unfortunately, but I did notice the variation you've shown on your blog.  Must be something with that color &/or plastic, as the '86 Serpentor figure's snake from the Joe line shares a similar color & is found in 6 different shades.  May have been a difficult color to replicate between runs.  Either way very cool variation!

Some of the new Tyrants figures looks to have taken a more robotic look to the armor, mixed with the obvious knights reference from series 1. Also to me some of the good & bad guys head gear looks smaller, so I was thinking maybe we might have seen a few with more facial sculpt than we saw in series 1.  Would have been an interesting set of figures for sure!

Wow, the proof looks great! I don't know if I've ever seen that art before. Would it be possible to get another photo without the bend/curl? I'd love to have it as my desktop. So you got it from the same seller who has the artwork up on ebay? That's cool, he must have some good contacts to get this stuff. I can't believe how fast the Command Outpost and accompanying sketches went! I wanted them so bad but I couldn't justify the money. (ie: my wife would have killed me).

Yeah, I have no idea how licensing works either. Although one example of an outside company licensing Hasbro's IP is Rom the Spaceknight though that's been related to comics rather than toys. It probably would be easier to just make 2" tall guys with similar colors and articulation and call them Space Raiders or something. Considering the drop in 3D printer prices, I wonder if we're closer than we think to something like this happening. I've been tinkering with some software to see if I could build something myself. (Maybe)

I'll let you know when I start some of my projects. I started a new blog to post some custom AR ideas that have been running around in my head. The first thing I may do though is make some new soldiers and try to match the colors of the Series 2 repaints. I don't want to paint over the old guys so I figure I can make my own and then do it! Then I may try to find plastic knights and robots to try and match the look of some of the other Series 2 guys while still basing them on some Series 1 parts.

I agree that the Power Axe and GASP seem to have at least one new officer each (Y'know, after the Dragonwind and Thunderhammer, I find the Power Axe and GASP to be the most disappointing of the series). Wow, you're right, just think how fun that would've been to collect all those different variations. And to get the Air Refinery, Defense Stations, and Battle Dashers would have been nice too.

Please let us know what the seller (eventually) says if you hear from him. Even if they're lost or gone, I'd love to know what else he remembers owning.

Sure, I'll look to scan on our scanner at work, most you may have to do afterwards is clean up around 2 minor creases, though they may not be an issue.  Should be able to get to tomorrow, early next week at the latest.  Great idea on setting as your desktop background.  That seller has had some very nice things throughout the years.  The one thing they had I wanted but could not afford was a huge number of blueprints for the set pieces of Alien3.  I was able to score 1 blueprint out of the lot :/

If I ever take a shot at sculpting new figures, I'd likely take cues from other toylines I favor.  Ironically Hasbro started going with a little more scifi/fantasy vibe on their '87 Joe figures, same year AR came out.  I can readily think of a handful of figures from the late 80s that would transition well into AR.  Now my mind is wandering, thinking of how awesome it'd be to have an AR styled Joe line...

Thank you, a scan would be very appreciated!

I looked through that seller's list of stuff and yeah, he does have some cool items. I would like that Airlandia map...but not for $1200. I'm actually surprised at the low prices on many of the toy prototypes and sketches, I thought they'd go for a lot more money.

Which figures are you thinking about? Did you happen to see the Masters of the Universe/AR customs that some guy posted on ebay a while back?

Jack, can you PM me your email address?  I have a scan available but uploading here would require me to clear some space, much easier to email it.  It's about 8MB.  The file itself is pretty clean.  If you have access to Photoshop you should be able to clean up the few crease lines, rotate the orientation & crop out the frame.  I don't have access to it myself but can probably get a friend to fix these if need be.

I may be able to get you a quality scan of the Airlandia map one day, would just have to track it down.

Those MU/AR customs were indeed fantastic; I'd planned to make some Joe scaled AR customs one day.  Still might get to it eventually.

For the head sculpt, pretty much most helmeted Joe/Cobra figures could work, the rest of the body you might have to get a little more creative.

87 Cobra Commander - entire figure

87 Royal Guard - entire figure

87 Battle Force 2000 - some of the torsos & such should work for futuristic looking outfits

88 Destro - everything but head (would make a cool Tyrant general)

88 Iron Grenadier - entire figure (head sculpt is close to some of the S1 Tyrants)

88 Toxo Viper - entire figure with helmet

88 Voltar - everything but head

88 Ferret - head

88 Nullifer - entire figure

88 Secto Viper - clear dome helmeted head - would personally love to see some clear domes used to expand on unmasked head options.  Don't know how easy that would be to reproduce though.

That's just 2 years right there, could literally spend hours coming up with AR styled figures using the entire run.  Now I'm off to go make me some Joe scaled AR customs ;)

I do have access to Photoshop, I'm actually a graphic designer/illustrator.

PM sent. Thank you!

As for custom AR joes; yeah, just the range of various Viper heads alone would mean you'd never run out of ideas there. I assume you would stick with the 80s figures and not the newer ones? Nullifier works well but his mask is too goofy for me. I think body-wise, I'd use the Cobra-La Royal Guard.

I'd like to do both o-ring & modern style.  There is a KS that took place earlier this year in modern Joe style, Hell Screamerz, which has some usable parts.  Most notably some of the bad guys have the Conquistador style helmets a couple of the Tyrant figures had.

Very cool! I always liked that about those Tyrant helmets with the Spanish Conquistador style; the sculpting on all of them is genius.

Can't place them all but I believe all of the Tyrants had what looks like head gear based off ancient armor: the Conquistadors, Knights, Vikings maybe (Hawkwind pilot), etc., while the Air Raiders had more traditional style science fiction space helmets. The Tyrants headgear was a cool contrast to the futuristic looking Air Raiders headgear.

For correct Tyrant proportions, consider using an actual Tyrant fig, thinned/shaved down with exacto-blade then apply a new sculpt layer with an epoxy putty like 'green stuff' or Aves.
Very nice avatar pic you have there!!

I stumbled across these two guys (Flak Viper maybe), they get my vote for AR conversions.

Pretty crazy that this figure seems to be production made, full plastic and stamped, not a resin prototype or sculpt. I'd love to make a mold of this.
