I'm brand new to the whole scene here and I'm hesitant to post any of my sculpts since it's been 20 years since I've made anything of clay and I'm pretty rusty, but I guess you gotta start somewhere. Right now I'm still learning what I like, what I dont and what I need to learn (lots). Sculpey is too flimsy and soft, so I'm gonna use Apoxy for my next sculpt and see how it goes.

I sculpted these guys last week, not perfect, but I'm happy with how they turned out. If anyone has tips, crits or whatever, fire away, I can take it.

VERY NICE!!!

I like the way you used the base of the arm to prop up what I assume is a relatively heavy figure.  Likewise with the gun on the other one.

Yep - you'd better get started on the 2nd wave!!  I think your onto something...

Welcome to the boards! It's always great to see some new talent around here.

I'm not a sculptor or artist in any way, so take everything I have to say with a grain of salt.

I'm not a huge fan of the first figure, but that's mostly because I feel like the arm propping him up is way too big/long. Otherwise you've done a pretty good job with the little details! As for the second figure, I don't think I have any complaints at all. He looks pretty good with some very nice detailing. (Although I can't tell what's going on with his left hand. I'm assuming that's a photography issue though.)

I also notice you like O shapes. Not a complaint/criticism, just something I noticed.

I look forward to seeing what else you create!

I have finished up some sketches of the Mercenaries meant to fight these Robot bad guys:

Thanks! I wanted to start with some simple robot shapes to get my feet wet, next up are monsters and mercenaries...maybe they'll be more to your liking?

Yeah, the figure was super heavy and since I'm a total amateur, I forgot to start with any sort of armature, so the arm on the ground was esential! But I also think it added to the dynamism of the pose. Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, the arm got a little long (even though it was supposed to be longer than normal), but I'm still figuring out how to translate a sketch to 3D...harder than I thought! As for that left hand, it's a 3 fingered metal claw arm. Kinda hard to notice in these pics (and maybe not sculpted great either), but hopefully I can sand out some more edges to pop it out more. And yeah, these characters are from the same "army so the o-shaped rivets are a way of making their designs congruous. (And they're easy details to add that break up the smooth/boring shapes a bit)

Thanks! Hopeully I can get some cool molds/casts out of them! I too love robots, though I've never been very good at designing large varieties of them...I need to start doing more!

I've always been a big fan of needlessly cluttered armor (Boba Fett and Dirge come to mind), it could be pretty fun to take some cues from those cool Fallout designs too. I wouldn't count it out, but I have a pretty good line of figures in the queue that I'm gearing up to sculpt (I've been making my own comics for years, and want to work through some of the characters)

I made some progress on the Male Mercenary figure tonight and (perhaps foolishly) did a partial bake so my mushy fingers dont screw anything up as I work on the head and armor details tomorrow. As per Redjarojam's suggestion, I tried to scale him down significantly, but he's still gonna be right around Trash Bag Bunch size; slightly taller than MUSCLE figures. But I like how it's turning out, and going smaller wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I just made sure to spend enough time to build a more accurate armature.

Thanks! Yeah, I really like it so far, and I hope I can stick with it, cause my evenings are usually spent in front of a computer drawing...this is just the break I need; creative, yet detached from the day/night job of drawing!

Great stuff. I like the war against the machines type idea. Hope to see more of your customs.

Thanks! I think I like the whole idea of "playsets" in my approach to new figures. I think my next will be Saturday Mornign Cartoon style scuba boy adventurer vs the monsters of the deep.

Yuss! This guy is looking good.

Working smaller not only makes your figures fit in with more toy lines but also requires less silicone/rubber to produce them! Cheaper figures helps collectors afford them!

So I finished up my first little "series" of sculpts and am not quite ready to start trying to make molds and casts yet, so I'm starting on some new ones that are maybe a little weird and undesireable by most, but I kinda like the idea... "Sh*tty Soldiers". I wanna do at least 4, and probably draw a little diorama backdrop to sell with any figures I might cast and an 8 page origin mini comic too. Lofty goals, but for now, I'm just gonna make the sculpts.

So, please to enjoy "Sh*tty Soldiers"

Now these I like.

3rd guy's tank should be a toilet.

A set of 3 or 5 will be nicer than 4.

Odd groupings display/photograph so much better than even because a single figure is the centerpiece.

(Also the central figure is probably the leader.)

You will obviously want to work on the name.  Maybe Crap Commandos or something.

Default color is the standard Army Man Green. (ala Green Green Army, etc)

Chase/variant colors are marbled (maybe a brown and yellow), GID, and of course, the rarest is gold (ala Uggly Pet Shop)

Any "soldier" toyline should have a defined nemesis -- at least in the backstory, if not in the actual toyline (ala Trash Bag Bunch, SLUG Zombies, etc)

Work on the backstory.  Who have they waged war against? Is the war justified or are they just misunderstood?

Where do they come from? How were they created? How did they attain life? What is their relationship to mankind?

Get the essence of this backstory on one paragraph -- much more important than an 8-page origin comic.

Great chance to name each character -- no shortage of poop synonyms or military posts/rankings.

Frankly, I'd shoot for two opposing armies of 9 figures each for an 18 figures set.

Two playsets or displays -- one for each faction.

Army Ants would be a good model all around.

Review GPK and Trash Pack for other ideas.

And Food Fighters.

Also Dr. Doo-Doo from Axe Cop.

And Ghoulies.

Keep up the good work, you have mad talent!

How is that any different from Shitty Soliders? All you've done is change the alliteration to C instead of S.

Yeah, 'Shitty Soldiers' is a fine a name as any.  It's not as if these are intended for the Toys-r-Us shelves, so no worries about potentially offending the kiddies or prudish sorts.

"You will obviously want to work on the name" sounds presumptuous and rather insulting to Derek's art and naming choices, imho.   These are his creations, after all.

Thanks for the replies! I was worried that these old be too "juvenile" for collectors, but it seems that they're at least funny or silly enough to be interesting.

the 3rd guy is in fact riding in a toilet with treads that are maybe too big to showcase it as such... Something to make more clear one way or another. And maybe I will stop at three for this "wave" until something new shitspiration strikes me.

As for the name, I like the whole Make your own toys idea and the fact that you can make toys that a major company would NEVER make, so I figured I may as well go all out with the name as well. Cater to the collector who wants something different, out of the box, irregular. But I take no offense to the name change suggestion, obviously. I probably won't though ;)

i definitely wanna make the figures poo colors though. Maybe the rarest ones will be marbled red and brown... The "oh shit I'm dying" chase figures ;)

As for the origin and their relationship to mankind, I've certainly thought that out, hence the idea for a comic to include with it, after all the story pitches and show pitches I've done at my job, I got it covered, but you're right that a log line and summary paragraph would be smart! And the names are coming. Commander Crap? Corporal Caca? Private Poop? Sergeant Squirts? I haven't really thought them through yet.

As for making a big line of characters, this is more of a hobby for me, my day job is pretty creatively demanding and these are just for fun for now. I just finished some robots/mercenaries and I have an idea for a small assortment (3-5) underwater scuba superhero fighting oceanic oddities... Lots of little ideas to keep it fresh, loose, and fun! That being said, I do love the idea of doing another wave at some point, but wanna keep my goals pretty loose so that sculpting and toy making doesn't become another "job" and then I'll be forced to find ANOTHER creative outlet where I don't feel pressure to make money from.

So for now, 3-5 shitty soldiers potentially packed with a mini comic and a diorama scene to set them up in front of. Crossing my fingers that I stay motivated ;) /wall of text

"oh shit I'm dying" chase variant is absolutely hilarious.

On that note, perhaps marble a couple odd figures with a little bit of yellow for a "corn" effect too!

I can't believe how enthusiastic I am about poop figures.

I was thinking of the corn/peanut angle, as well.   Maybe 'Colonel Korn', lol.

What about a drippy-looking guy with a miserable expression called something like 'Burrito Blast'?  A mad clown villain called 'Shitz n Gigglez'?

Ok, this is getting ridiculous....I'll be cooking dinner soon, for cripe's sake!   :ulp:

The perils of design by committee.

You are an excellent illustrator and I think you could be onto something bigger than three characters.  There is no reason that you cannot imagine your designs at retail -- in which case, the name will be critical.  There is no inherent virtue in thinking small, indie, or edgy.  I get that it is "just a hobby," and you have a demanding dayjob -- and that is why you delegate, outsource, etc.

Obviously you can and will do whatever you want. I have looked beyond these three sculpts, and I know that you are extremely talented as an illustrator.

Anyway, this is sincere advice, free to anyone with serious aspirations of designing a toyline.

1. Pick a retail-appropriate name.

2. If you are making "soldiers,"  then design (at least) two factions.  Define who they are fighting.  Is it piss vs shit?  shit vs food? autoshit vs deceptishit? joeshit vs venomshit? The why is not as important -- only that there is a who.  Don't show us soldier without defining the enemy.

3. Roll out 8+ figures/characters at once.  The "collect them all" drive/desire is the most successful gimmick ever.  A group of three will generate more interest when it is shown to be part of a larger intentional and defined collection.  Lego does 16 characters at once. Moose does 40 or 50 at once. If nothing else, a pre-determined collection (a "set") shows that the designer is committed to the idea, and of equal importance, it gives the collector a defined goal.

4. The strength of your idea is to have two warring factions each given a visual cue as to their alignment by color. The tie, to Classic Green Army Men is in your favor.  I would make one army that classic forest green and the other olive green, but who knows, one could be brown.  The point is, when you start making each figure a different color, you will weaken the perceived allegiance, hindering the soldier/army aspect of the project.

5. Variant/chase/colorways/repaints/etc are found in addition to the defined set. I would offer the basic soldiers in packs of 3 and have a leader from each side also available in gold along with a distinct playset or display made for each faction. Other variants of original-collection figures could become available as event exclusives, store exclusives, website exclusives, contest exclusives, promos, giveaways, etc, etc, etc. The point here is that variants are not forced into the attainment of the primary collection, but they are available as distinct extras.

6. Write the backstory in one paragraph.  Do this before a comic or any other peripheral material is created.  (Look at the packaging for Army Ants or Food Fighters, or many other toylines.)

Anyway, I know that you are a talented designer.  I just think with your kind of talent, plus a little more intentionality (and maybe long-term thinking) you could create something really exceptionally cool. That's it.  I wish you the best with whatever route you take.
