This stuff's great! I really like the tidy/chaotic aesthetic of the sculpts. Very cool

Thanks, guys!

Ok, I'm getting the sculpting down (as far as being more comfortable, not mastering it), getting more confident...but now I am in a weird place of "Ok, so what kind of figures do I want to produce? What do I want to spend hours and hours waiting to be cast... one at a time"

Right now, the only answer I have is the MegaWatt figure I just did my first casts of. So...I think I'm "tossing" all my past sculpts and going back to the drawing board to see what I am really passionate about producing. Monsters? Robots? Superhero-looking guys? Hmm...

I've got 3 sculpts going at once. The top one is a monster that has some wood and moss armor. And the other 2 are just generic muscular bodies that I'll just figure out what to do with later.

(Does anyone know why the image uploaded otter rotates images automatically upon upload?)

Not sure why... My uploads did the same but only in one of my threads. Even rotating them before uploading wouldnt help, some little drive error it seems.

Neat sculpts and the moss armor guy sounds pretty awesome

depending on the camera images sometimes have orientation set in the meta info, assuming it has something to do with that. Did you rotate or edit it at all before uploading?

Holy shit, it's been too long! Can't believe it's almost been a year to the day since I was last active on the boards. My day job got real hectic for a while and I put aside sculpting and casting, but I'm back! I just finished my new figure and am making a mold of the 3rd figure as I work on the accompanying comic. Here's a peek at some of my new goods.

This is Shit Storm, he was a fun little guy to make, but way too solid! Used a lot of rubber on this guy. I had the most fun with his comic, since I got to make a lot of poo jokes. You can buy him here if you're interested (I may make a new post for this guy in a little bit)

And here's the new little gal that I'm super stoked on, MURDERMAID!

Glad to be back, hope to be posting regularly again (even though I just started at a new job and it's mad stressful/busy!)

YEAH!

I have about 15 Spark Plugs left (the mold is shot...doubt I'll make a new one), and I just started casting ShitStorm last week, and will start on Murdermaid this week, but still have to draw the comic.

Very cool stuff man, you have a lot of talent.

What color do you plan on casting Murdermaid in?

And on an unrelated note, I also live in Burbank!

Thanks, man! I'm not sure what color to do yet, for sure I wanna do a blue-ish Green and maybe a pink too. Definitely one ocean color. And my daughter probably wants pink. ;) Burbank buddies! (Even though I just work here now...I've moved to suburbia.

Hey all! I’ve been gone a long time (though lurking periodically), but I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things with making more figs! I got pretty crazy with work, family and other art stuff, but iver the last few months finally carved out some time to make a couple new little guys. So I thought I’d post some pics of what I’ve been up to.

Here’s a Launchpad I made as a crew gift for the DuckTales season 2 wrap party. (Don’t know why they’re posting sideways...)

Next up is this little space vampire bounty hunter guy I drew a picture of a while back that I thought would be perfect for a “toys Derek wishes existed when he was 8” exercise.

I really wanted to challenge myself to make the sculpt look like my art, something Redjar gave me grief about with my last sculpts. So I started off with a head... and decided to further challenge myself by making an articulated figure (that was achieved with moderate success)
Attached File  7430CAFD-5200-4CA1-BBDB-E2E73ABB0236.jpeg   56.87K   0 downloadsAttached File  A7E17970-81CD-4193-84D5-81BCBA1014B5.jpeg   48.84K   0 downloadsAttached File  97CF329A-395B-4BAD-9F50-F3A1F6F7130D.jpeg   52.98K   0 downloadsAttached File  F66B07BF-E185-4C3D-8AB5-F35DC1C346A9.jpeg   81.5K   0 downloads

Then I had to make this bad boy official with some bright rubber casts and packaging artwork!
Attached File  54F306CE-D534-42D7-83CB-2966D184AC01.jpeg   238.14K   0 downloadsAttached File  CF743619-7B73-497D-AD4E-C5C2D1121859.jpeg   52.14K   0 downloads

Making an articulated figure was REAL hard. I enjoyed the challenge, and wish I had been able to find some better resources for a good way to build and work with joints, but I made some molds off of some bootleg Battle Beasts, and they worked “ok”. I only say ok, because working with joints from more professional lines seemed to be “too perfect” and making a copy of a copy didn’t produce joints that worked. Thank God for shoddy knockoffs and their lackluster production! I have some ideas for how to tackle this problem for my next figures, but... we’ll see.

Now that I’ve made a couple articulated figures, I want to start messing with multi color casting of one, so that it looks like it has paint applications... sorta. Anyway, I drew this guy up and was pretty happy with him. What I WASN’T happy with was the joints I’d used on my last figures. They were cast from some bootleg Battle Beasts and not very tight/sturdy. So I went to the hardware store and bought bought some washers and pins and after applying some clay and hair bands, I was ready to try molding and casting them and they worked great! Very sturdy, very beefy.

Now to start getting my hands dirty with sculpting!!

This is what I’ve done so far this weekend. I’m actually really happy with how he’s evolved since the drawing, and how I’ve been able to tighten up some of my sculpting. He’s giving me some MOTU mini vibes and I’m 100% ok with that! Getting pretty eager to get this guy in production.

Just curious: have you thought of using Glyos joints? I'm sure you could get some cheap figs to sacrifice...and in the end, you'd have a jointed mini that was also Glyos-compatible!

If you do go the glyos route, I think I remember reading on here that some people use these torches for the peg.

https://www.hobbylob...Torches/p/24375

They are slightly bigger, so fit really well with the shrinkage from molding/casting.  Though if you're using rubber, Im not sure if that will affect the fit. Plus if you pull em out all the time I imagine the peg might tear.

Yeah, I had considered going the Glyos route, but ultimately, I make these for myself, my kids, and my friends and family's kids, so I want them to be a little more sturdy so the arms and heads don't pop off and get lost during casual play. Whether or not my current solution will accomplish those goals remains to be seen.

Those little torches are pretty cool though, I'll have to search them out and see them up close; figure out how they might work/make things easier. But for now, these plugs I made seem to be working pretty well. Maybe if people start showing more interest in my sculpts/figures it may be worth it to accommodate collector's desire for more Glyos compatibility (even I think it would be cool to mix and match with my Battle Tribes figures...if I ever open them), but for now I'm just gonna stick with what's easiest/appropriate for my current goals: learning and experimentation.

Got this little guy wrapped up and cast! I learned a lot from my last 2 figures and made some more strategically placed vents, was a lot more careful with the 2 part mold making process (finding the center line with clay and keeping it clean is the most boring part, but I persisted), and pulled the best first casts from a mold I’ve ever done! A few air bubbles I think will be easy to eliminate in the future, and some more messing around with pigments is necessary, but I’m real happy with this dude.
