The figure has a stamp that says diemer inc and to me looks like the creature from the black lagoon. Does anybody have any info?

It is a Diener monster, with an "n." They were released by Deiner in and around 1979, and were also sold as McDonalds Happy Meal toys.

Yeah these guys are pretty hard to get hold of in the UK

Pretty common over here. I've had many over the years.
They were like the original Keshi of America.
