On a trek to Target (the nearest is an hour away), I managed to pick up a new cartoony Obi-Wan. First, I should say that I was very impressed with the packaging. With nice, clean graphics and a large photo of the character, I think this is the best single-carded Star Wars figure packaging since the vintage days.

For photos of ol' Ben, check out this gallery at GalacticHunter.com. On with the review!

LOOKS: 4 out of 5
Obi-Wan looks great! Flowing lines, a sharp sculpt, and somewhat precise paint details make this figure look nice and clean. However, his mouth has a somewhat strange shape. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be smiling or scowling. But either way, the enigma doesn't take away from the figure's looks.

ARTICULATION: 1.5 out of 5
Ben has only four swivel joints at the neck, shoulders, and waist. Additionally, with his pre-posed arms, even this limited articulation is not very useful. I've been able to get him in only two different poses. A cartoon figure like this should play well, and Ben clearly does not.

ACCESSORIES: 2 out of 5
Obi-Wan comes with a lightsaber and a stand. The stand is nifty, and the lightsaber sports some impressive details. But since some Star Wars figures come with partial playsets, these two puny accessories are not adequate.

VALUE: 2 out of 5
Ben cost $7.00 at Target. Ugh. Considering Ephant Mon cost $5, this is a rip.

COOLNESS: 4 out of 5
This wave includes the first cartoony Star Wars figures since Droids and Ewoks. And the style of the figures are really nifty. They are definitely a distinctive and impressive addition to a Star Wars display.

INITIAL OVERALL: 2.7 out of 5
These first few animated Clone Wars figures reminds me of the first wave of Justice League figures: limited articulation, few accessories, and hefty price tag. Mattel caught on quickly that the JL fans wanted articulation and cool accessories. Hopefully, Hasbro follows suit with the animated Clone Wars line.

Edit: 2/2/04
STAYING POWER: 1 out of 5
Obviously, Ben didn't get much play time. The lack of articulation made him a very dull addition to my collection. $7 down the tubes...

I recommend this toy to MOC collectors, though. The packaging is quite nice. But for my purposes, Obi-Wan is pretty much worthless.

ADJUSTED OVERALL: 2.4 out of 5

Very nice pick-up, I still haven’t seen these in stores.

I understand your frustrations but for me this will be a welcome addition to my collection.

Is he made of a sturdier plastic or is it that flimsy plastic that Hasbro seems to be using?

Does his base connect to the newer bases, or only to other Clone Wars cartoon figures?

Hm... I'm not sure what you're referring to when you talk about the "flimsy plastic that Hasbro seems to be using". Maybe that Wampa plastic? Anyway, I don't have an issue with the plastic. I think it's relatively sturdy.

The stand doesn't seem to connect to any other bases (including the other Clone Wars stands). That might not be bad, though. I think it would probably look best on its own since it's the Star Wars logo.

The figure looks great. I think the cartoon sculpt is fantastic. However, the fact that it is really just a statue and its $7.00 price tag make this an unattractive figure for me.

It’s mainly the weapons that are flimsy, but occasionally the figure seems to have the same problem. It’s mainly in the hands.

I also forgot that the stand said SW. I guess it is better that it doesn't lock into anything.

I've bought very few jedi, but ALL of their lightsabers broke- even the ones whose weapons I never touched aside from placing them in the figures' hands! Now, that's flimsy!

I'm not trying to be funny, but could they have just been the Jedi that had removable blades?

What was breaking?

The little peg that holds the lightsabers in their handles kept snapping off, sometimes from their owh weight.

I know what you mean. if I wasn't Broke and exclusively focusing on TMNT and Muppet figures I'd snap one of these up! 7 bucks seems a bit much. I would pay 6, but 7 makes me just want to think about it (I'm funny that way) But once Yoda comes out, He will definately find a place in my collection!

...and you can't stop her from doing it? Or just take them back?

Anyway, I haven't watched the Clone Wars, but doesn't seem terrible from what I've heard. Obi-Wan doesn't look bad at all, but "statues" are indeed annoying.

Now, perhaps time to look for that Yoda myself...
