Here's the deal with the Rommel x Nama wunderkind. His entire body is made up of the ground meat of his opponents. He is just really the grinder as well.

What if someone submitted a figure with an outhouse for a head, and said, "well the other figure has the outhouse as his body, not just the head like mine." Folks would flip.

I think that would be about the same as all the eyeball submissions. There have been a ton of entries that are similar or have a similar concept. There were even two different Plague Doctor entries, if I recall correctly. A Plague Doctor is a pretty uncommon concept, yet two people both submitted one.

My guess is that it was entirely coincidental. With all the varied characters that guy makes, it's not really surprising that there is a meat grinder in his cast of characters.

Hm.

I'll get right on my sketch of that shit-monster with an outhouse for a head.

You know, for the sake of commonality.

I agree that the similarities were worth pointing out. Bogleech would be better off submitting a design that won't be compared to something that already exists in the indie minifig community. If a completely unknown artist came up with one design and it was an anthropomorphic meat grinder, I wouldn't buy that it was a coincidence. I'd give Bogleech the benefit of the doubt until he comments on it.

I honestly don't even care. Nama's Grinder met Takashi Shimada. That's going to be a tough act to follow, factory production or not.

Definite similarities... And I mean, a meat grinder for a character is pretty random. Coincidence? I think not.

I also told you to pull your bottom lip over your head and swallow....

Hahaha, no, I am not going to draw any shithouse characters, or anything to make any point, because I really don't care. I don't think anybody set out to rip off Nama, and I have a feeling that upon seeing the comparison, Bogs will likely go another way.

If not, I still feel pretty good about Nama's and my Grinder figure.

Thorny was the inspiration for doing Rooty, but I intentionally didnt look at the guy for a pretty long time to try not make it too similar.
I did say I wouldn't get much points for originality on the OT forums. But, is there a specific point your trying to make dude?

Oh look, the troll with nothing worthwhile to contribute returns... Hows life under the rock?

And a cactus cowboy isn't exactly random, doofus.

Is it possible to be truly original anymore? When I commission artists, I give them references from as many other sources I can find. Afterall, the reason I want a similar character in my game is because I like the concepts of the original ideas. And sometimes, when I think of something, I realize it's already been done as a minifigure too... and why is that? Because MIMP and other series are intended parody as well! People have asked me at shows why I don't have any Godzilla-like reptilian monsters released and my simple answer... buying an actual Godzilla toy would be cheaper. I digress.

My point: is anything truly original anymore? What is wrong with parody and homage?

If its done tastefully (not blatantly just ripping something off) I don't see it as a bad thing, thats why they say 'imitation is the highest form of flattery'. I don't even think Bogleech should have pulled his meat grinder character (since it was unique enough) just think yeah.. There were similarities. And I cant think of another meat grinder mini figure at all.
You make a good point about M.I.M.P Stratos, and its actually one of the things I like most about them - familiarity, I know most of the characters and their history.
All of the figures Ive done for UOVII so far are heavily inspired by other stuff. Satyrant is basically Baphomet or a Satyr (as his name would suggest), Venus Maneater is basically an alien Venus flytrap hybrid, but it looks like the thing from Little Barber Shop of Horrors too. Even Necrofungus is is a toadstool zombie... Nothing groundbreakig there. I just make what I like, thats all I really care about.

I do think there is some truly original stuff still being made, but its far and few between. Stuff like Ironhaus' Hell House is a perfect example, but even Iron has done some stuff (like blemmyea warrior) that is a homage to a famous monster. I think thats cool.

Anyways, are we still talking about toys here?

Pretty much everything as been done before... It's all about putting your own personal touch on it.

I can see where somebody would draw a comparison between the two cactus designs, as they are similar in proportion... But it's not something to fight over.

So... everybody relax.

Yeah man, I ain't denying they're similar.. I just figured a cactus is a cool idea for a minifigure.

I was just bustin' your balls a little, man.
Didn't mean anything malicious by it at all.

Your pic made me think of Thorny, and since he was sitting right here on the shelf, I snapped a pic of him.
I honestly wouldn't mind a whole "gang" of cowboy/bandito cacti.

I mean, I think to make him more lean, and shoot for a more gaucho type cowboy, would be to distance him from Thorny's design.

I kinda like the short, squat look. He looks like the sheriff of cactus-patch.
He just needs a Tonto-esque sidekick, made from a peyote cactus!

No worries dude. A comparison was bound to happen, its not a bad thing. It was really Monsternhunter who pissed me off, not you.
A gang of cowboy bandits would be fun! Theres not enough cactus minifigures around...
