I have noticed that there are a large amount of artists on this site that all do very good work. I was wondering if any of you have any experience in the comics industry. I have always wanted to write comics, but have absolutely zero experience. I have read thousands of books, but never have I spoke with anybody from the industry. Maybe we could work on a small project together if you like? Let me know what's up, thanks!

I have had experience in the Indy comics industry. I've self published a few titles, did some collaboration and commission work. I used to attend a lot of different cons, but I always had a table at SPX in Bethesda Maryland each year. The last time I went was 2008. I haven't published any of my work since then and have since shifted all of my characters and stories to different media outlets like novels, kids books etc. It was always my dream to self publish my own comics, but sadly the comics industry is dying. Every year there are fewer and fewer comic shops and many publishers have gone bankrupt. The cost of printing is always increasing, and the limited channels of distribution make it very difficult to break even on your time and money investment. It seems the future of comics is digital, but I have yet to see any feasible way to go digital without suffering from piracy and being able to turn a small profit.    I would love nothing more than to restore the industry back to the glory days and get people interested in comics again. I think there is no media that comes close to the individual experience of reading an exciting story through panels and pictures. I wish you the best of luck on your project and I hope the future of the industry is better than the present.

Diamond and that distribution choke point that they've created, are a real game killer. It's not good for indy labels OR shops.

Back in 2005 there were two real comic distributors left, Diamond and FM International. I had submitted my book to both and was rejected by Diamond, but accepted by FM. Not having Diamond as a channel for the book was a downer, but I still thought it was good enough to move forward selling through FM and Cons etc. I had 3,000 copies printed and when the time came to send the books to FM for distribution, they went out of business the same month. I did eventually sell all but about 100 of the books through hard work and determination, but it took me two years to do so. Because the book had to be labeled in the Adults Only category it really limited where and how I could sell the book. Diamond is a monopoly and because they have minimums and weren't willing to let me sell through previews Adult without an expensive ad campaign there was no chance to really enter the market.

I understand exactly where you're coming from. I live in the Midwest, so I often feel like I'm the only person in the state who can still enjoy funny books. My English teacher and librarian both have told me that they don't even know how to read comics, because they get lost in the pictures.
