I’m finally going to try sculpting some minis, and was wondering what kinds of tools do you use the most.  I found this set on Amazon, which looks pretty extensive, but would it be better if I started out with a smaller set?

Also any words of wisdom or recommendations on sculpting with the intention to cast when finished would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

That's a nice looking set. Way more options than I personally use though.

I use a rubber-tipped sculpting tool I found at Hobby Lobby. I also use inexpensive dental picks I found at Ollies or Marcs (like Big Lots). And I have one or two homemade tools.

Definitely get some rubber tipped sculpting tools. They are a god send. Also, that tool set on Amazon looks like it will have alot of unnecessary tools for sculpting minis. Also alot of the tools are too large to use for the scale you'd want.  I suggest a set of dental tools like these

If you want really detailed figures this is the best set money can buy.

If your intention is simpler things like MUSCLE figures you can use basic stuff like a long clay needle and a few different shapes of blades on an x-acto knife handle.

It's really important to figure out if your own personal sculpting style is based in carving into clay or adding/shaping clay. The two methods are very different from one another. You can get nearly the same result either way but how you get there is very different.

Great!  I just ordered a couple of these sets.  Thanks for the recommendations!  I'll be sure to share pics of the little buggers.

That Amazon set isn't bad for working larger scale, and has some nice tools for small scale/detail work. The quality isn't that great though. Look for stainless steel wax carving tools if you want similar ones to work with. The other sets people have pointed out are killer!

Hello man, in my inexperience have I fabricated my tools with paper fasteners? Clips? I do not know how they are called in English, I apologize, maybe the most important knowledge is fun, let your imagination fly, if I can help you with some advice do not hesitate to ask, regards
