I never do this, but I've got to air this somewhere. I was contacted on IG by someone asking me if I wanted to buy a couple of MUSCLE SR's, and of course, I do. So I was asked to "name my price", so I did. It was too low, so I said "why don't you just tell me what you want for them?". Nope. Wanted me to list a different price. So I do. Tells me I'm insulting him. For christ's sake, JUST TELL ME WHAT THE F*** YOU WANT FOR THEM?!

I will never understand this approach to selling something.

Anyway, thanks for listening :)

I can kind of understand.
At the same time though, sometimes shooting super low can be insulting.
What grinds my guts, is when you have a lot listed for a price, and folks lowball you while trying to cherry pick the pricey figures from the lot.
Selling stuff has gotten weird lately.

I totally get it from the "don't be a dickhead lowballer" perspective. The guy presented these pieces to me and the convo felt kind of like he wanted me to bid low and we would meet somewhere in the middle. So I did. But instead of offering a counter, he just keeps saying "that's too low", and so I'll said "so then just tell me what you want?". Instead of answering, he just goes on and on about how rare the pieces are. So then I say "ok, this is realistically what I can actually pay", which I felt was a pretty reasonable price based on what I've paid for the other rare/uncommon stuff I have. And then he tells me that I'm insulting him.

The irony is, I was willing to pay his price, but he blocked me after telling how much he wanted  :D

What makes that even more weird/frustrating is that they reached out to you to start that chain of events in motion. Why approach someone to do business if you are not willing to assert what you want from said business from the get-go?

I hate shit like that. It's why I am so glad we require prices on sales threads. Skip the bullshit and tell us what you want.

I saw some dude doing this the other day on a local selling facebook group. Posts a box of tools and says "make an offer." Dudes start making offers and he is acting the same way, "eff that shit, are you kidding me bro!?"

Eventually he just said, "this whole set is easily worth $400, and that's on the low-end."

To which I commented and said, "So why not post an asking price of $400? Since people offering anything below it, regardless of the difference, is apparently insulting to you?" (One guy offered a little over $300.) He came back with a snarky response and then changed his ad to $400. It still sold, because it was a good deal, but it actually progressed the deal instead of having people make 50 offers he was pissed off about.

Yo, it IS insulting though, when people look at a lot, ask you to part it out, and offer you 10% of the value of the pieces they are asking for.

I get wanting to start a negotiation low, but if you already see a listed price, and you shoot super low, what kind of a response do you expect?

Although NOT listing a price at all, no explanation, and THEN acting put out?

Ugh. It's that kind of mentality that took me out of MUSCLE collecting to begin with.

I usually see it as an insult on themselves and laugh it off...they obviously think they can swindle the seller even though it is listed at a going rate. This in my opinion just makes them look completely stupid. I see how it can be insulting, but I just don't get offended by much. Angry at the stupidity is more the emotion i get!

I haven't really sold a lot of stuff, preferring usually to trade, so I guess I haven't really experienced it from that perspective. I can see how a ridiculously low ball offer could be offensive. But he approached me. And I offered over 1k.

As soon as he asked me what I would pay, I knew he was like...I don't, fishing maybe? Like I felt like he was trying to set me up so he could get all Simpsons comic book guy on me, like "um, no, actually, it is worth THIS much", and I'm just like give me a price and I'll pay it! In the end, he kind of played himself.

Haha - I've always found your pretty easy to negotiate with.  You're fair, but also stand up for yourself - when you need to.  Thank god I've never been on the receiving end of a crank Irongrandpa!!!

In regards to subject - first rule of negotiation, get the other guy to name a price.  Then go from there.  Since this guy approached you first (much like Fuzzbuster pointed out), you would have thought he would have been willing to name a price.

It could be it was all BS - and he may be approaching several forks, just trying to "get a feel" for how much stuff could go for.

Either way, it's disingenuous, and I'm sure a frustrating waste of time.  : /

I think most people understand what they have, what it's worth, and just want a fair shake on it.  In this case, with how weird it was presented to CaffeineSanta, I feel the seller knew what it was worth but wanted more.  Why else would you ask someone to name their own price, but really have a price in your head?  Just in case they came back with one higher, perhaps?

The only motivation I can think of for doing this is to hope that your potential buyer is willing to pay more than what an item is worth. If they don't bite, just move on to the next guy who might be exploitable. It's pretty gross, and greedy as eff, because it's essentially relaying that the seller is so concerned about cost of opportunity that they aren't even satisfied with posting a price that they would actually be happy with, because by doing so there's that slight chance that they exclude themselves from possibly getting a few more $ from an uninformed buyer. I've had this exact interaction with a few IG sellers, which is honestly why I don't do much buying on there. Particularly frustrating when you're actually trying to buy something for which you actually don't know what to offer. Ballpark figures are incredibly helpful in that situation.

I'm sure I miss out on some deals, as I see a lot of you guys mentioning buying from there, but it really has made me appreciate how much better it is to work through dealings on LRG.

That's pretty much my take on it at this point. The seller and I have a mutual friend that clued me in to the guy buying and reselling for a higher price than he paid, which is fine, and that would have worked had he just been up front in the first place :D

I'm actually hoping this guy will coool off and hit me up again in the future. I want the pieces he has, and the price isn't more than I'm willing to pay.

I'm curious about which SR we're talking about here. Were they SHA and BHS SR? Or the more expensive Drunk'n Master type of SR?

As far as I can tell, the SHA and BHS prices are going down because more and more are being found. I can't imagine paying more than $600 for one max.(I know many people say much less but that's my cap for those specific figures) But the other SR are pretty much one of a kind types of figures which warrant the thousands of dollars price tag.

I own both SHA and BHS, so it wasn't either of those, it's a couple of the "only ones known to exist" kinds. I paid way more than was needed for my BHS and SHA because I wanted them both regardless of price. These two would be no different, the guy just got impatient with me and blocked me before he could complete the sale :D

Instagram is the new place for the people who like to rip other people off are.

The last and only deal I tried to work out was with a guy who wouldn't stop asking me for something I posted a picture of. I told him repeatedly it wasn't on the table, and then told him what I would be interested in and what I had to offer.

After showing me various pictures of shit I wasn't interested in and continuing to show me shit I didn't care about, I just ignored him. After a few hours of no response he gets sassy, and then starts to send me pictures of things I actually had an interest in. By that point I wasn't ever going to complete a deal with him.
