A new toy i sculpted and designed myself with some help from Trutek is now in japan being prepared for authentic sofubi production so i thought it would be a good time to share it here.

The inspiration came from a few different places. The ooze-ball i designed and sculpted last year combined with the classic man in the moon face from the old silent short film Le Voyage dans la Lune(which can be seen in full on youtube since it's public domain now)and there are several other ooze-it based toys we took inspiration from as well. The actual sculpting took me several months from start to finish. I really like how the ball is double sided so it's almost like having two toys at once with one side being a fun take on the old ooze-it idea and the other side being more of a detailed classic sculpt. The size is fairly large(like a big grapefruit more or less)so production in rubber was out of the question since the amount of material alone would have made the price simply unreasonable. For anyone unfamiliar with sofubi here is a great video that explains it's history very well.

I love sofubi as a material for toys because it has such an incredible history behind it and it holds up so well over time plus there are lots of amazing artists who specialize in painting vinyl toys. Add to that the fact production is usually done by just a few people pulling one toy at a time and all by hand makes everything seem so traditional and personal which i really like. The plan is for the toy to be a pretty soft squishy vinyl rather then the usual hard stuff. Hopefully in the future there will be lots of neat colors and painted versions but the first release is an open pre-order for a full month so absolutely anyone who wants the toy can snag it without any hassle at all which was very important to us both as toy fans. I'll leave a link to my blog at the end of this post so if anyone wants even more information about the sculpting process and other neat little details they can find them there since this is long-winded enough as is. If anyone has any questions about the sculpting please feel free to ask.

Wow, that's some incredible work. There's clearly some talent on this board but I think I have to give you the blue ribbon dude. This transcends "toy" by a longshot. Wonderful concept!

Thanks guys. It's always cool when a few people here like what i've sculpted. There are always moments during the long exhausting process where i just stop and wonder what they hell i'm even trying to do. So knowing people who like the same kind of toys i do can see some merit in the final product feels really neat.

Haha a few people have asked about the eyes on the ooze side and how i came up with the shape around the centers that looks kind of like a star or an explosion or something so i figured i would share the true artistic inspiration behind the eyes...

Update!

In the next couple months give or take there will be a limited artist exclusive color of this thing up for sale. It will be the only artist exclusive color that will ever be released.

Stay tuned...

wow solid crack detail & ooze. Can't wait to see what it looks like with some color.  Also that's cool that you made it large (I am really drawn to larger pieces).
Where would we be able to order this craterface?

Me and Jkaris(the guy who owns this site)should have an artist exclusive bubblegum pink version available sometime in the next couple of months. I'll post here about it when we get the order in from japan.
