I got some spare Battle beasts and Laser beasts lying around and would like to customize them.I've seen some pretty cool Repaints on here , but couldn't find any tutorials.What kind of paint do i need?What kind of base coat?I'm new to this so any additional info is highly appreciated ,Thanks!

For this it is best to look in to the Custom part of this board.

In that area a lot of artists and amateurs from the board share their creations but you can also find a lot of tips and tricks regarding paint types etc.

So have a look around there and in case you might not find the answers your looking for, also use the search option available, you can always ask some specific questions in that part of the board as well since that´s were most of the creative minds hangout and I´m sure they´ll be more than willing to help you with all your questions.

 

Personally I´ve never painted any BB or LB myself simply because I don´t want to ruin any of them, regardless the poor condition they´re already in, so the great ones I have in my customs collection are all the result of successful commissions to fellow members/artists out here.

I have done quite a few repaints, and here are a few tips that I use:

 

For paint, I stick with water based acrylic paints. There are several different brands that I will use. Citadel and Vallejo acrylics are very high quality paints with great pigment count, however they come with a bit more of a premium price point. I also use a lot of Apple Barrel, Folk Art, Delta Ceramcoat, etc... which can be picked up for relatively low prices at Michaels, Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc...

 

I really recommend that you stay away from enamels when possible. A lot of enamels won't cure properly on PVC plastic, so you will always be left with a slightly tacky feeling. I stay with acrylics for all of my paints. They are a little bit of a softer paint, but customs really don't get handled like a normal toy anyways.

 

A big thing to remember with painting any small figure with fine details, and really anything else as well, is that you want to paint with several thin coats rather than one or two thick coats. So don't just use a paint straight from the bottle. Put the paint in another container, like a small plate, bowl or pallette, and thin the paint down with a little bit of water. You want the paint to be thinner than what it's like coming out of the bottle, but you don't want to thin it all the way down to a watery, inky consistancy (unless you are wanting to do a wash, although that's a different technique that you can learn later).

 

For the base coat, I have had mixed luck with any spray based paint specifically PVC mini figures like Battle Beasts. (Spray primers/base coats work great on stiff plastics, like wargame miniatures, models, etc...) Usually, I will prime the figure by brushing on a few thin coats of either black or dark grey acrylics. Usually I let this dry completely for a day to make sure that it completely cures, then from there I can begin painting with whatever colors I like.

Great info thanks alot! Im going to pick some up citadel or Vallejo and Give it a try.
