I have also seen my own previously perfect neons get stained from a long storage together in a 10 gallon bin. I don't know for sure what caused it, but the temperature where they were stored was over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (I live in Texas), so I suspect it was the heat.

That is part of what made me want to do this was to see what exactly causes the fading. If they don't fade at room temperature (and various other temperatures), then that will help answer some questions.

MetalMonkey suggested that compression might be the cause, so I am willing to try that too. This might end up a long term project.

This kind of staining isn't limited to MIMP, either—I have other types of rubber/soft plastic mini figures that have got these pink stains. One line I haven't seen it happen with is MUSCLE.

I have green MUSCLE figures which have browned a little. I think it's unlikely they got it from red MIMP, but interesting that it involves a green figure becoming discoloured again.

The questions that need answering are:

- Why do green figures (olive and neon) go brownish?

- Why do yellow figures (regular and neon) acquire red tinges?

- Why are no other colours apparently affected?

- Why does it happen with figures that aren't MIMP?

Ah, interesting. I don't think I have any green MUSCLE that I would describe as having brownish discoloration, but I have noticed the green ones can dull or darken a bit, so that they neon color isn't as bright as it once was.

In addition to green and yellow, I'm sure I also have white and peach/flesh mini figures that have the pink staining. I'll have to do some digging when I get home as now I'm curious exactly how many different colors of figures I have in my collection that have these types of stains.

I too have had a couple of green MUSCLE that have shown slight brown staining, usually right on the edge of their arms, legs or weapons. Again though, these came to me via other collectors, so I can't comment on how those particular figures were stored.

As for the MIMP colours that stain, maybe it's just a simple case that the NP pigment is too dark to be stained by the lighter 'weaker' colours like NY in particular. The stains on some of my NG figures I'd describe as being brick red almost, rather than neon red or orange. With the NY figures it's different because the colour is so light anyway, it shows the colour transfer clearly.

Speaking of NP figures, I wonder what has happened to that NP Red Cap that guy is trying to pass off as an 'employee custom'? It's obviously faded in some way, rather than the product of colour transfer I would imagine.

Has anyone noted any significant colour transfer between Mini Boglin colours that are similar to MIMP? I moved on my Boglin collection so long ago I can't possible comment.

That red cap is on sale now for $325. I think I might go for it!

I definitely have Mini Boglins that are stained in a very similar way to MIMP. I know I have yellow and green ones with the bright red/pink staining. It makes sense, since the material of MIMP and Mini Boglins seems very similar.

I actually forgot about it and got sidetracked, though I have left the red and yellow monsters touching for months in temperatures between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. I checked them this week and nothing has happened to them. So not much to report. I need to try some other stuff with them.

Edit: I am going to test Metalmonkey's theory that compression causes it. They are now stuck together between the two heaviest books I own. We'll see if anything happens.

It doesn't really help with the "why," but here's a pic of a diverse group of figures in my collection that have been cursed by the stain devil. There's a wide range of materials here, from softer rubber to hard plastic.

Yellow kinkeshi have this problem too. The more I think about it, I think it might have been where they touched the ink on the mini books in the capsules.

yep, some of those rubber dinos I've been after lately have the same issue too.

At one point I had a polar bear BB with a bright pink dot on his forehead, very similar to your gryphon there

I checked on Jotun and Red Cap today. After pulling the books apart I found a tiny bit of red fade on Jotun's arm that wasn't there before! Which means that pressure can cause the monsters to fade (like keeping them in large ziplocs and putting them on top of each other). The temperature of my house stayed in the same range during the period (70-74 fahrenheit).

I am not sure the fade shows up well in pictures, but I have added them here:

Attached File  DSCN7471.JPG   82.37K   13 downloads

Congrats to Metalmonkey for being right about compression being a cause of red fade.

Note: The fade is on the arm without the club, and is close to the sleeve. If you can't see it, I can try to get closer. It is a small amount of fade.

I wonder how long it takes for those larger/deeper stains to develop. I might try doing this with a NY and NR and see what happens.

Yeah that is a good question. This one is minimal. Maybe I should put them back in between the books for a few months and see what happens?

I may as well repost these old pics of some dodgy MIMP figures I acquired quite a few years back when I first started recollecting these, but I was only new on the boards here and didn't want people to think I was trying to pass of some super-rare employee editions..

I assume they're stained, but since the discolouration is pretty uniform it seems a bit unusual. Haven't seen any other figures quite like this.

They may be worthless, but to me they look cool and will always have a home in my collection.

Yeah I have seen quite a few purples get like that and a couple of greens. The Yellow looks odd for a faded one. Not sure what would cause that. Maybe it was orange at one point?

Coud be why. I'll take a pic of it next to some orange figures and compare it. These came in the same lot, so I'm guessing whatever it was that stained them happened to them all.

I left a broken red monster on top of a broken yellow monster in my hot garage for over a month to see if they would fade in the extreme temperature (roughly 90-100 degrees fahrenheit).

I went outside to check them today, and found zero fade. This leads me to believe that heat has little to no effect on bleeding and that fade is caused mostly by other forces, especially pressure.

I left them out there longer to see if the hot summer needs longer to actually fade. Will report back later.

something tells me it's something to do with a combo of heat and humidity. It seems like the moisture would cause the colors to leech or something. but that's just an assumption and not based on any solid science

I think for a proper control experiment, you would need to have yellow and green MIMP under pressure from other colours (including other yellows and greens), not just red.

Not a bad idea. I have a bunch of damaged ones, so I will stick some out there.
