So I just bought almost the complete collection of Monster High dolls that launched sometime last year and just had two more waves released recently. I know these aren't technically little rubber guys, but I notice a lot of board members have interest in monsters and the like. These dolls seem fairly priced at $16.99 each. Has anyone else looked at these characters besides me? They seem like a cool concept.

Yeah, I saw these the other day. Thought they were pretty cool dolls. I wouldn't be surprised if they get to be a big hit. Kid's love monsters, and girls love dolls. I'm surprised they havn't made an animated series yet.

I remember the commercial from a while back, but couldn't figure out what they were trying to sell, as they didn't show any figures or dolls in it. And I never saw anything at the stores, but I wasn't looking for it. Then the other day I was wandering around the toy aisle an saw them on the end caps on the back shelves away from the dolls. Bad placement can actually hinder the success of a toy line, so I wasn't at all surprised that the end caps were still full.

Well the dolls are supported by some animation. It runs on a You-tube channel. I'm not sure if it is in syndication on any TV channel though.

Well my interest in Monster High is renewed with the current release of several new waves at retail. So since it's been a few months since I last asked, has anyone else found themselves buying this line yet?

I am really keen on the retro-inspired fashion these dolls sport. I don't see nearly as much eighties retro being worn in real life as these dolls have on, but then again I'm not in High School or away at College (well I'm at community college). Is there a big 80's retro thing going on right now, or is it limited to these dolls? (laughs)

I really think it would be neat to land a job in the art department for a toy such as this, or gormiti. Both these toylines seem to me to have breathed some life, mixed with originality, to the toy shelves instead of just being re-hashed garbage.

Any thoughts?

I like what you're saying about Monster High and Gormiti bringing a bit of imagination back into toys - imagination's always a good thing.

Just that neither of these lines appeal much. Monster High's like Bratz dolls with stitches and blue skin, and Gormiti has a bit of a Captain Planet whiff about it.

Still, better than all these "designer toy" things.

Not sure I see the resemblance! If Gormiti is like anything from before, it's Battle Beasts, surely?

Yeah, perhaps... Just never been all that impressed with them. Got about eight of them a few years ago and it was the mix of the ecological themes and the "X-TREME" poses that put me off. There are SOME good looking ones out there (mostly the funghi-based ones), but there's a lot of rubbish to go through to find those.

Yeah, the Captain Planet thing was a bit off, I'll admit that

I'll admit that Monster High is like Bratz in the way that they are both like Barbie, they are both fashion dolls lines. I think the Monster High dolls have proportions more similar to Anime or Manga than Bratz does, but that's splitting hairs. So long as Monster High dolls is coming out with new dolls, and the "Daughters of the Classic Horror Monsters" theme stays, it should have some drawing power. I'm digging the cheesy-ness of puns like "Drop Dead Gorgeous", "Gloom Beach", "Dawn of the Dance", and "Day at the Maul". I also dig the non-Caucasian centric characters, I mean you got a pink girl, green girl, and blue girl. That alone puts it miles ahead of Barbie, but on par with the different ethnicity's of Bratz, although fictional. I have only watched a few minutes of the cartoon for Monster High and I dig the style.

I'm sure that before long most of the originality will have dried up, and we'll just have another fashion doll line on our hands, but the fact that Mattel risked doing a mainstream "goth/horror" themed doll-line with wide release shows they figure either parents and/or their kids would dig what used to be only a "freaky" subculture.

HA!

I admit I'm not the target demographic for this series. But if I had a daughter I would probably try to get her into them.

There you got a great lot, Lethalwhip! I got only 4 by now, they are a bit expensive over here in Germany, and i wish they could be a whiff smaller, but overall it's a great line. Definitely some imaginative toys and really looking forward to the new ones that were shown at SDCC and are slated for a december release (maybe)...

I noticed these at Wal-Mart waaay back when they first came out during the modular reset at the time. I hadn't seen any media about them, so was actually kinda impressed. I usually never go for dolls, but the monster theme intrigued me. I've been keeping my eye on these from afar and have been mildly tempted to get into these. I just can't afford to start collecting something new! If they made some neat little mini-figs...I just might partake. We should start a petition, or something, eh?

Oh man, if they made Monster High C.U.T.I.E.S. style figures, my daughter would lose her grip on reality. She's already beside herself over Gogos.

Yeah... My kid was really into the larger ones when her age was still in single digits (hard to think that this brand has been around that long!), but I showed her these and she thought they were the shits.

The main complaint, was that they were all seated, and goofy looking.

MEga Bloks has small articulated versions of the Monster High dolls, at about 2 inches tall.  The packaging is coffin-shaped, with cardboard punchout on the back to open them up.  I have grabbed up a couple.  They make great "mirror universe" counterparts to the Disney princess dolls of about the same size.

Because the only way a girl can enjoy a monster toy is if it is adorable.

Ada really struggles with this because she likes the toys in the "boy" aisles, but doesn't want to actually be a boy. We are gender neutral on toys, but unfortunately the rest of society is not.

I went through the same thing with Dely. I just enforced to her, that she likes what she likes, and that is fine. It was not uncommon for her to play with her girl branded legos along with Halo figures from Megabloks.

If she marks out for Mechagodzilla, then I get her Mechagodzilla stuff. When she wants something girly, she can have it. I love that Mattel went in on making those high school super hero dolls for girls, that are a lot more action figurey than Barbies tend to be.

Still, back to the topic, I think she would have been more apt to jump on the Monster High minis, if they weren't all seated. I think the "goofy looking" complaint was an attempt on her part to bolster her opinion, as she is also really into Trash Pack... Which has always been goofy AsF.

They did have a non-blind-packed series of 3-4 inch vinyl figures in boxes for about $10 a pop. They were okay, with some oddball chase figures, link attached. I think these current minis are partially available carded, but don't quote me on that ;) s-l1600.jpg
