Well, its been around 6 months since I (or anybody else really) posted in the origianl rarity thread, so, in an attempt to rekindle interest and debate, I've decided to have a look at the rarity of MIMP series 1 neons. I'm still referring to GormTransMonsters' list as I've done previously and any opinions I give are based on eBay listings/sales, as well as transactions that appear to have been made here at LRG, so please feel free to contribute or simply shoot me down in flames. Also, I'm aware that some of the members who contributed to the original thread are no longer using LRG as much as they used to, so it will be interesting to see what new MIMP collectors/members have to say.

I've given a brief comment on most of the figures previously identified as rare or uncommon, as well as suggested my top 10 in terms of rarity.

-Series 1 Neons-

Considered rare and in no particular order:

NY Behemoth - Still considered a rare figure to find, especially without staining (mine came from a former LRG member who won it on eBay.fr)
NG Behemoth - Considered by many as more rare than NY Behemoth - scarcely seen on eBay, apart from the one that is repeatedly listed every so often by an Italian seller *possibly an Italian figure and not Matchbox
NR Cyclops - Rare in terms of it usually only showing up on eBay.fr, but is seen more often than NG Cyclops
NG Cyclops - By far the most rare of the Cyclops figures (not counting Premiums), which scarcely even shows up on eBay.fr
NY Great Beast - Rarely seen in mint/unstained condition, but this figure does appear periodically on eBay.fr as well as ebay.uk where one sold recently for over £30
NR Great Beast - Seen more often than the NY Great Beast, in fact could be regarded as uncommon rather than rare by some
NY Hydra - Very similar to NY Great Beast in terms of rarity and where it shows up. There seems to have been a fair few badly damaged/stained ones appear over the last year or so
NR Hydra - Seen a little more often than NY Hydra, but at times can be one of the more difficult to get NR figures
NY T-Rex - Still a scarcely seen figure
NR T-Rex - Possibly seen less than the NY T-Rex
NY Baba Yaga - Another very hard to find NY figure
NG Redcap - An interesting figure in that it was/is considered rare, yet several have been seen on ebay.fr and ebay.uk over the last year (I had a double at one point and struggled to sell it)
NY Werewolf - Despite still being a rare figure, dare I say that this the 'most common' of the NY high point value monsters?
NP Werewolf - This figure appears infrequently and, along with NP Hobgoblin and NP Kraken, is possibly considered on the the hardest NP figures to come by. Please note that many collectors believe NP is the easiest colour set to collect
NG Gremlin - This figure could be considered as underrated in its rarity. Extremely scarce on eBay (I can't recall seeing one in the last year) and is often stained when found
NY Roc - This is a rare bird indeed! I struggled to recall seeing one of these on eBay over the last year (or longer), but I do know that one or two have changed hand via LRG of late
NY Vampire - Another mid-level rare NY yellow figure
NY Ogre - Very rarely seen on ebay or elsewhere
NG Jotun Troll - This figure has popped up infrequently on eBay over time, usually with a high 'buy it now'. Still considered a rare figure
NG Kraken - Seen more than you'd think on ebay.fr, usually as part of large lots. At least 2 have appeared over the last 6 months
NP Kraken - Similar to NP Werewolf, but possibly seen a little less?
NY Hobgoblin - Another figure that can slip under the rarity radar. Very rarely seen out in the wild, especially in mint condition (mine came in from the same seller as my NY Behemoth)
NP Hobgoblin - This figure is one of the three most rare NP figures. Similar to those NP figures mentioned earlier it appears infrequently on ebay.uk and eBay.fr
NY Tengu - Both NY and NG Tengus are rare, to some extent similar to the NY/NG Behemoth situation. The place to find these will be eBay.fr
NG Tengu - As above, but some may consider NG Tengu harder to come by than NY
NY Bigfoot - This figure could possibly be downgraded to uncommon as it seems to show up at a similar rate to NR Bigfoot, maybe a little less
NR Griffin - A rare figure that I only recall popping up once on ebay in the last 18 months
NR Goblin - This little creature has proven a pain for several LRG members! He can be extremely hard to track down at times and has often been picked up privately rather than via eBay

Considered Uncommon and in no particular order:

NG Coatlicue - This figure is available more than people may think, both on ebay.fr and ebay.uk
NR Jotun Troll - Similiar in some ways to NG Coatlicue, this figure has appeared more and more over the last year or so
NR Karnak - A difficult one in that this figure has popped up infrequently at times, then disappeared completely for months on end (to my personal frustration ha!)
NR Bigfoot
NP Baba Yaga
NY Griffin - Despite being in the uncommon section, this figure is actually very rarely seen either on eBay or doing the rounds here at LRG (mine was found at a car boot sale, in mint condition and given to me for free)
NP The Monster
NG Manticore - This figure, similiar to NG Red Cap and NG Kraken has appeard several times over the last year both on ebay and here at LRG. In fact, there were a couple of members with doubles of this guy at one point
NP Manticore - Possibly could be downgraded to common?
NP Coatlicue - Possibly seen less than NG Coatlicue?
NY The Monster

Premiums in no particular order: *Note - We now have a better understanding as to why these particular Premiums are so rare

-Pink Cyclops
-Pink Jotun Troll
-Pine Green Hydra
-Cyan Cyclops
-Orange T.Rex

My perceived top 10 in terms of rarity, in descending order, based on what I've seen/heard over the last year:

1. NG Behemoth/NY Behemoth
2. NG Cyclops
3. NY Ogre
4. NY Hobgoblin
5. NG Gremlin
6. NG Tengu
7. NY Roc
8. NR Griffin
9. NY Hydra
10. NY Great Beast

Hey Burty,

Just noticed NY and NP Windigo aren't mensioned in any of those lists you made. I take it they're quite common then?

I'd say they're seen too frequently to be in the 'uncommon' category. In fact, the original list Fede made had those particular figures listed as 'common', hence why I left them off the list above. There are several figures I feel could change category one way or the other.

Correct.

Re: neon purple figures, I have owned 3 NP werewolf and 0 NP Kraken, so there is no question in my mind that the latter is less common.

So this goes someway to answering the question I posed in the first post regarding NP Kraken. Are you of the mindset that NP Hobgoblin is less rare than NP Kraken? I think we could say with some degree of certainty that the top 3 NP rares are NP Kraken, NP Hobgoblin and NP Werewolf - maybe even in that order.

Well I've been collecting NP figures for a while now & never seen a NP Kraken or Hobgoblin (and they are the only 2 I need)

I've only ever seen one NP Kraken on ebay, this was on ebay.fr. I've been fortunate to have two Hobgoblins both bought on ebay.uk with BIN.

In my experience I've never seen a NG gremlin on ebay ever.

I've only seen two NP Krakens on eBay (+ a Sonrics) and I was fortunate enough to bag one of them thanks to a fellow LRG member. Other than those mentioned earlier, the rest of the NP figures always show up over time.

As for NG Gremlin, I'm like you Chris in that I've never seen one on eBay, hence why he's #5 on my top 10 list. Mine came to me via a private sale, along with NG Tengu if I recall correctly.

I'm actually surprised at how hard a time I'm having finding an NR Karnak of late. NR Griffin understandable, but NR Karnak I thought if have by now.

I don't know about NP Werewolf, like I said I have had 3, but in addition to Kraken and Hobgoblin, I'm still missing Baba Yaga, Vampire and Roc in this colour. So to me, those three are less common.

But I don't know if that's because they actually are less common, or that there's plenty out there and nobody will trade with me because I refuse to pay inflated prices

Damn! heres me thinking I had an exceptionally rare figure in my collection of sealed mimps. However it's still special to me which is all that matters.  ^_^

The question now is of course, where did the rest of the uncommon series 1 neons originate from? I'm guessing they came from these single packs. Attached File  s1_1i.jpg   32.9K   8 downloads

Can anyone else back me up on this?

Ha! Chris and I were only talking this morning via PM about refusing to pay inflated prices for the last few figures we need. Part of the fun is trying to get a deal on a figure(s) rather than paying an extortionate price just to claim that you have it.
Also, it seems that good old Roc is a bit of a pain in the arse to get in most neon colours apart from NR. I'll keep an eye out for an NP one for you.

The vast majority of the rare/uncommon neon figures were only available in France and then made their way here via eBay purchases. I'm presuming (maybe wrongly) that they were in single packs or French secret 12 packs (I don't recall seeing a 12 pack with French writing though). Every single rare/uncommon figures I've purchased privately originated from an eBay.fr purchase. The only odd exception to this was the NY Griffin I was given free at a car boot - it was the only MIMP on her stall and she said she'd never been to France and didn't have an eBay account, nor did her daughter.

The thing about these neons is that on eBay France, they seem downright common! And even an orange T Rex went on eBay France for buttons recently (is this a French premium, by any chance?).

Well the 2 single packs I remember getting during my early re-collecting days on ebay way back in March 2005 were from Italy. So the single packs are actually Italian, not French.

Truth be told, they didn't even contain anything uncommon at all (NP Karnak and a NY Kraken). And not only was everything written in Italian, the figures didn't even come with their corresponding trading cards either! If I recall correctly, Karnak had a Windigo card and Kraken had a Goblin card.

There's an NP Roc in this (slightly tatty looking) lot here: http://www.ebay.co.u...&_qi=RTM1489537
It also has two NP Manticores in it, which is quite funny considering NP Manticore is still under the 'uncommon' section.

Yeah, seen it, paying a tenner for a single commonish figure I need is obviously a non-starter, which I'm sure is a familiar issue that many have faced.

I don't think NP Manticore is uncommon at all.

Upon rechecking, I didn't see NR Great Beast or NR Hydra in your list. These two are quite hard to find.

Added those now  Maybe it could be said that NR Hydra is seen less so than NR Great Beast. In fact, there's been members here, including myself, who've had multiples of NR Great Beast at one time. I've put them both under the rare section rather than uncommon at this stage though.

On the topic of rarity, I just came across this blast from the past on eBay.de - I wonder if we'll ever see one of these guys turn up and if so, will it be on a Jotun Troll? http://www.ebay.de/i...=item19e40b2ac6

For those MIMP collectors who are close to completing their S1 neon set, it would be interesting to know which of the below figures you still need in order to shed further light on which neon figures are indeed the most rare. It could also give fellow collectors a chance to see the figures they need to keep an eye out for all listed in one place, in order to help each other people complete their sets

1. NG Behemoth/NY Behemoth
2. NG Cyclops
3. NY Ogre
4. NY Hobgoblin
5. NG Gremlin
6. NG Tengu
7. NY Roc
8. NR Griffin
9. NY Hydra
10. NY Great Beast

I've collected MIMP for around four years now & I just need NY Great Beast, Hobgoblin & NG Cyclops for a complete neons set.
I've really lost the desire to pay silly sums to get what & I want & that combined with other collectors having seemingly endless piles of money to burn through has ground my MIMP collecting to a halt for quite some time.
I've pretty much got to the stage where anything I want or need is pretty rare & expensive & it's really taken the fun out of the hobby, for me.

I hear what you're saying and agree to an extent. You've done well to only need those 3 figures if indeed you haven't paid a high amount for the rest. The most I paid for a single figure across series 1 & 2 was £25 (on one occasion), which when combined with the fact that I've had some absolute bargains along the way is okay with me. I agree in that the expense of a figure(s) can take some of the fun out of the hobby, but when it comes to rarity, well that adds to the excitement of the hobby for me.

If I remember correctly, my NY Ogre came as part of a group deal which included some of the figures in this old pic below. Due to it being a group purchase I can't be certain what I paid for each particular figure, but I'm sure that due to NY Ogre being hard to come by I'd imagine it would be £15+ at this stage. There's another member on here, who, when I last heard from him several months ago via PM, only needed NY Ogre for a full set, so this could influence the price if one popped up on eBay.
