Anyone else a fan of the Far Cry series? I missed the first two but played through 3 and 4 and absolutely love them. There are strong tribal themes integrated into the previous modern-era games so I'm really looking forward to seeing how they do this one now that they've gone full caveman.

Fan of 3, 4 is pretty much 3 with elephants. It wouldn't be a bad thing but it's glaringly obvious they it's almost the exact same game to me. The plots are the same, character interactions so far (I've just killed Yuma, reminds too much of the Vas fight) seem almost the same. There was no part part of 4 that screamed "I am far cry 4! I am not the same game as 3". I hate the story lines, the vocie acting for both is terible. I wanted Jason to die. All he did was whine. Ajax is a little better but his lines and voice acting are pretty bad too. I have a very complicated love/hate relationship with far cry.

yikes, sounds like it.

I see what you're saying about the similarities, but maybe that's why I enjoyed both of them so much. I think they did an excellent job in 4 filling the environment with culture and detail, even if it's similar to what they did in 3. I like it. As for the definitive difference that screamed "I am far cry 4!", I'm pretty sure that was the elephants. Obviously they're carrying that on into this next game with the mammoths, but that doesn't bother me.

I guess I generally have a more laid back approach to FPS's, I don't play them very often and usually drop a game after I've finished the single player mode. I feel like this series is really well developed and I have a lot of fun playing them, I can let hokey voice acting pass now and then ( I played through Resident Evil after all...). And I usually always hate the silent protagonist in games. I think that's normal. ;)

Same here. And 4 is basically the same game as 3. Except with a forced widescreen that rendered one-third of my 4:3 monitor useless. All of the games thus far have been seriously flawed, and yet, all of them have been compelling experiences.

Far Cry is easily one of my favorite series right now. Despite how similar 3 and 4 were I still loved going through both of them. I think the reason I love them so much is that they are FUN. It's a game with enough story to move you forward but the focus is really just going out and playing in the sandbox. So many games are designed with complex stories and a deeper gameplay system, but Far Cry lets the player forget all that and just have a good time. That's the series' greatest strength to me. Don't get me wrong, I love a well written game with more player engagement, but sometimes after a day at work I just want to run around and shoot things for a bit without thinking about it.
I fully expect Primal to be very familiar in many aspects, but I really hope they take advantage of the new setting and introduce some fresh gameplay ideas into the existing formula.

ARK: Survival Evolved has everything this game has and more, and it's half the price!

I remember you mentioning this game but I think I assumed it was an RTS for some reason. I'll have to check into it

Plus it had an extreme number of problems at launch, given that it was early access. (Still is.)

They've honestly fixed a majority of the issues and the game has a ridiculous amount of content. As it is, I've logged 270 hours into the game and they just released a bunch of new patches with probably another 50 or so hours AT LEAST. (Including baby making for the dinos. ;) )

The only serious drag is the taming times on the dinosaurs, which can be upwards of 3 IRL hours. This is easily mitigated by playing on a private server with taming speed turned up. Unless, of course, you're into that kind of thing.

Far Cry really is a harsh mistress for me, as much as I would love to hate it, I can't. I finished the achievements on Far Cry 3 and I'm 8 away from finishing 4. The play itself is terrific but the story was just meh overall, it has the frame to achieve true greatness but it just falls a little short. I feel like that's most FPS weakness though (I love Destiny but they really Bungied the story)

I'm really ashamed to admit how much I've played 3 and 4. I'm also a Filthy casual and play Xbox, didn't have the screen issue.
