No taste to speak of. But then, this was sitting in a display case for what is probably decades, surrounded by MOSTLY ceramic/stone/crystal turtles. There were plastic ones int he case, though.

Maybe it's some kind of resin?

Looks like resin to me - that would be my first guess.

Cool sculpt! If the price were reasonable, I'd gladly buy a custom recast of this figure.

this is most likely a post ww2 bakelite export market item. back when the term "japanese" as related to goods equaled "crap". it is either early plastic or bakelite. i can't remember how to tell the difference. anyway, there was a lot of things like this back then. when the japanese were trying to sell ANYTHING to the invading "eastern barbarians" post war. there was a lot of little knick knacks like this, cheap punched steal samurai swords *shudders* (i hate that phrase, it's a katana!). there were also lots of dolls made to look like traditional geisha. that would be my best guess (asian studies minor in college for what it's worth. we talked about stuff like this in my modern japan class)

Very cool - I've been learning a lot about fake knockoff netsuke recently, and apparently this one is unique in that the holes are filled in, and thus it's not TRYING to pass itself off as a genuine work of art. It's actually honst about what it is, so it's more likly to have been sold as a knick-knack or replica rather than an overpriced netsuke.
