I don't think that matchbox would return the star monster because what would stop the person from mailing it back to matchbox again using a different name and address

Well, if Matchbox didn't return them with the prizes, they lied. Here's what it says on the back of the Secret 12 pack:

Keep your eyes peeled!
And win a mystery grab bag of Monster In My Pocket toys!
Hidden in one of every 10.000 Matchbox Monster In My Pocket packages, is a secret monster which has a special star branded on it´s back (*) instead of the usual point value. If you capture it, send it to the address below and we´ll return it with your Mystery Grab Bag of Monster In My Pocket toys retail valued at over $50!

Except that the star monster was not designed to collect. It was designed to be mailed back to Matchbox/MEG in exchange for a bunch of MIMP loot. The star monster then most likely went into the trash as it served its purpose.

Goin off Franks Jotun star monster, I would say the figure is extremely collectable. I cant say the same for the neon star monster.
I mean, MIMP were designed to be collected. Why would that change for just one figure, even if it was a promotional mail-away?
The fact MEG were gonna return them to the winners supports that theory even more,

Seeing as the advertisement states that the star monster would be returned to the owner it could be possible that there are several different star designs to colour ways that could be checked off a database to prevent from remailing the same figure again for a another prize bag.
That being said, would anyone hazard a guess as to how many star monsters would be produced for a legit promotion like this?
All theories are possible it seems, it'll be very interesting when a third star monster turns up for comparison.

So guys, I found a Star Monster.

I FOUND A STAR MONSTER!

Here's the deal:  I regularly purchase MIMP lots for figures I need, and whenever I get new ones in I put all the extras in a big bag containing smaller bags separated by color, not usually paying much attention to them. I stored this monster in there at some point (not certain when or what lot exactly I got it from) without even noticing the back of it. The other day, I was going through my duplicates and comparing the condition of them with the versions in my master set, turned around one of the purple Jotun Trolls, and noticed it looked off. Upon closer inspection, there it was. A star! I couldn't believe it, and am still so excited about it.

First, I do not intend to sell this figure, so please no offers or inquiries about buying it. I am posting this just to share the news with my fellow collectors here.

Second, you will notice the star looks different than it did on the neon purple Star Monster that was sold here late last year, which I'm sure most know was the first time an example of any Star Monster was ever publicly shared. I have no idea what the reason for that is, but the two examples are considerably different. On this one, there is a circle set into the back of the figure, with a very slightly raised star inside the circle. On top of the star is a slightly-raised "20," which is quite a bit narrower and in a different sort of type than the "20" on a normal Jotun Troll. It seems like they would have had to have a unique mold for this figure, considering the very different way the star and point value are treated.

Okay, now here are photos I took of the figure, showing the star from different angles:

And here's a comparison shot of a normal purple Jotun alongside the Star Monster (they are both regular purple, just some slight variation in shade as can happen with MIMP):

I have no doubt this is a legit figure as I don't know how it would be possible for someone to fake it the way the area is treated--it's so different from the normal point value.

It was really a huge thrill to discover it, especially since I've wanted to find one ever since the first time I looked at the back of a MIMP package when I was 6 years old.

So don't forget to always check your Jotuns. These beasts are out there waiting to be found!

Ehy fkro6784! This is a terrific find!! :woot:

I'm happy that you found such a cool Star Monster, this is absolutely a legit one for what I can see by the pictures you posted..

I just saw the topic now, I've been away from the forum for a while for several reasons.

I'm happy for you man!

I've attached two High res. shots of my Star Monster for comparison as someone asked in previous pages.

As we can see by the picture even my Star Monster seems to be legit with no signs of forgery.

Probably could be interesting theory that someone has already said here on the forum , they were forced to change the mold because maybe the first was destroyed when they decided to re-cast MIMPs after the Standard colours edition in Neon colours edition.

This was a fascinating thread. I've officially been on here for a year or so and probably lurked for a year prior to that and I just wanted to say that this site is an excellent source on all things mini-figure. I first learned of LRG through Frank's site and I find it fitting that he is in possession of this fabled Star Monster. Really enjoy the hobby of collecting mini-figures and the community here; I look forward to getting to know many of you. Does anyone here have a podcast or YouTube channel about mini-figures or toys?

They must have lied...I sent one away back in '92 when I was 7. Got the monsters, but not the Jotun
