We have a few people in the community 3D printing pieces. I have teamed up with a friend to CAD'd up a few toys for me to recast up in rubber.

As far as I know, Marty does it the old fashioned way. Slinging Urethane.
Hand sculpted either himself or with a partner.
He recently did have one of his Glyos designs factory produced.

Free CAD programs are more powerful and easier to learn than ever. Or...if you're less bound by scruples, you can always bittorrent cracked versions of higher-end programs. Either way, tutorials on basically every program can be found on youtube. For example, my buddy, Ben "Prometheum5" Mininberg, taught himself Creo 2.0 almost entirely via youtube tutorials.

Heh...I love how Tekkaman Blade is one of the models in the promo video for that AutoQ3D!
From what I'm told, though, most tablet-based CAD systems are hard to use. That AutoQ3D looks like a fairly weak NURBS modeler, which means it could be okay...but most mesh or "polygon" modelers like Sculptris require at least one of those Wacom tablets or something like that for super-fine precision work.

I do 3d printing. It was an essential part of prototyping BMOG, and I have started in with some MUSCLE and Battle Beast-Esq figures since full color 3d printing is starting to become viable. You can check out my Shapeways store to see a lot of what I've done.
I tend to do a lot of 'extrude modelling', where you start with a simple polygon form and pull new faces out of it, adjusting them until you get what you want. The rest is smoothing, combining and manipulating individual polys.

Thanks to my mechnical drafting classes, I have had a couple things 3d printed. would like to get my own 3d printer some day. I should post pictures of what I've printed sometime.
