Showcase #14: Great Deka Kinkeshi

If I had a chronological order for my collecting I would put the Great Deka KInkeshi at number five. I would rate them number three in my collection though. They are beautiful in there simplicity and display greatly (although a bit bulky it’s totally worth making the space for them).

The set consists of 31 figures (about 16cm) + The Kinnikuman Great Muscle Driver Box set w/Buffalo Man and Kinnikuman (Showcase #4) & The Kinnikuman Great Muscle Buster Box set w/Neptune Man and Kinnikuman (I will showcase that set in the future).

They were released in sets with a chronological order. You can follow the numbering with the packaging on the left hand corner (#1 to #31 respectively). They all came with an insert that had a checklist of the respective set or you could usually tell by the characters featured in the blister card.

While collecting the regular 9cm Deka I acquired my first Great Deka (Warsman) and I was hooked!

I didn’t start collecting them right away. I waited until January of this year and tried focusing almost exclusively on this line (distracted by the Mattel line hahaha). It took me about 6 months to complete the entire collection; getting 10 of them in random order was super easy for example. But once you get to the half point it becomes more difficult since certain sculpts are harder to come by.

The difficult sculpts to find: Kinnikuman, Hawkman, Ramenman, Black Hole, Pentagon, Terry Man, Akuma Shogun, The Ninja, Geronimo, Screw Kid, Kinnikuman Zebra, Rikishiman, Leoparudon, The Manriki, Mr. VTR & finally Kendaman.

The easiest to find: Warsman, Neptune Man, Sunshine, Buffalo Man & Brocken Jr., Kinnikuman Great, Kinnikuman Phoenix, Mariposa, Kinnikuman Soldier, Big Body

The factors for me include price, condition (finding them bright pink/flesh and not discolored which sometimes cannot be helped) and if they are sold loose or new (new ones can be found online).

Just like the regular 9cm Deka I acquired extras.

I have a total of 17 Great Deka doubles which I plan on painting or commissioning them to get painted (I have only managed to paint 2 of them so far).

Two good sources for me about the set was Mandarake’s REX Magazine #06 2015 and in September of 2016 UofM’s Professor Terry posted a blog about them (big props):

http://blog.uofmuscl...cle-musings-78/

If you choose to collect these go the yahoojapan route. ebay is way overpriced for these and even with the international shipping on average the Great Dekas end up being cheaper when purchased from Japan.

Also when looking at listing pictures you might find the Great Dekas look dirty or stained; I would take the risk because I found that with a proper cleaning most dirt and markings can be removed and then you end up with a steal/deal!

Happy Collecting!

The first series consists of the following 8 Great Dekas:

#1 Buffalo Man

#2 Sunshine

#3 Kinnikuman Great

#4 Kinnikuman

#5 Big The Budo

#6 Ashuraman

#7 Mongolman

#8 Neptune Man

Like I said some come up often in lots like Sunshine (I have this sculpt 3xs), Ashuraman (I also have 3 of these!) & Neptune Man (Ditto: 3xs!). Eventually I would like an entire set in their blister & also a painted collection.

The second series consists of the following 9 Great Dekas:

#9 Robin Mask

#10 Akuman Shogun

#11 Warsman

#12 Brocken Jr.

#13 Junkmna

#14 The Ninja

#15 Ramenman

#16 TerryMan

#17 Geronimo

Finding an Akuma Shogun that didn't have one of its horns cut off was hard and also for some reason this sculpt varied in prices/conditions. Warsman was always available (they could not give him away hahaha) but Terryman, Ramenman & Geronimo took me a bit to find for some reason. When I did find Terryman I found two at the same time (go figure).

The third series consists of the following 5 Great Dekas:

#18 Mariposa

#19 Kinnikuman Phoenix

#20 Kinnikuman Zebra

#21 Kinnikuman Soldier

#22 Kinnikuman Big Body

Unfortunately I don't own a loose #20 Kinnikuman Zebra (I own it New in Blister); I looked hard for it but no dice. That particular sculpt was more expensive but all the other sculpts are easy to get and find online on yahoojapan.

The fourth series consists of the following 5 Great Dekas:

#23 Pentagon

#24 Black Hole

#25 Rikishiman

#26 Kendaman

#27 Screw Kid

These particular sculpts are harder to come by and pricy. Especially Pentagon and at least for the year 2016/2017 Black Hole. But the most expensive of all the 31 Great Dekas is Kendaman.

I really lucked out finding a cheap Screw Kid in it's blister because the blister was damaged/opened (cardboard has a small tear in the back and the previous owner taped it) but am not so OCD when it comes to that stuff. Eventually I found a loose Screw Kid and this is an awesome sculpt!

Kendaman is an interesting story because I own two of them. What makes the Kendaman sculpt so expensive and rare is the condition. Because finding him complete with helmet and chain is rather difficult. Often you might find the Kendaman is missing the helmet and/or the chain is broken.

I found my first Kendaman in a lot but unfortunately he was missing his helmet but had a complete chain. Later on I found a Kendaman with a helmet but with a ripped chain LOL

So I ended up making a complete Kendaman from the two; if you find Kendaman online you will see him go on average for $150 to $200 (anything higher is way too much in my opinion).

I am torn about the idea of painting the extra Kendaman I have but since it has a ripped chain and is missing the helmet am open to the idea.

I wonder if its possible to recast a copy of the helmet in similar material so I can have the extra Kendaman complete (so if anyone here on LRG can help me out please contact me).

The fifth series consists of the following 4 Great Dekas:

#28 Leoparudon

#29 Manriki

#30 Mr. VTR

#31 Hawkman

This is the final release in the Great Deka series. I was lucky enough to get my hands on two Mr. VTR's but the Hawkman was super super difficult to find (I have yet to see him pop up online on yahoojapan). I emailed Mandarake Nakano and by pure chance they had a loose one (paid about $12 for him including shipping! so it never hurts to inquire/ask).

You know Rubberhammer I didnt even think about going a completely different route! That is a great idea. I thought about the eyeball; would love to get my hands on the eyeball from the detachable head figures. Who has one?!!!!
