I would like to know what is not allowed or frowned upon, when sculpting and casting stuff.  Obviously not others work- I know that...

I would like to do some Dantes Infernoesque demons....would I be permitted to do that?  The would not be rips of them, but just based on them.

Well, obviously you don't want to cast another artist's work without permission... And I am not even going to go near the rabbit hole that is the whole "Custom vs Bootleg" argument.

I think when it comes to sculpting your own content, the sky is the limit. I think where most guys have success, is finding an obscure character from a B movie, or a portmanteau of a theme and character to make some kind of comedic statement. If you want to do demons inspired by something else, and want to sculpt them yourself, I see no reason why anybody would have shit to say to you about it.

Thanks as always brother.  I was thinking to use just basic ideas from characters I like from some things- then completely make them my own original....kind of like basing figures off Gorgons or ancient stuff and then tricking them out to NOT resemble what I have taken the idea from.

I have many of my own original ideas, but find it very difficult to make them come out of my brain...

I'll be honest dude - I'm pretty darn sure that even if it were an issue (which I agree with Ironmask that in this case it probably won't be), Dante and his works are in public domain.  Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe even the famous illustrations that are often used in with the books are public domain at this point.  I can't remember why exactly - but I was researching this a couple of years ago specifically in regards to Dante.

So I say go for it.

Any work before 1923 is in the public domain. No one owns the Divine Comedy, so you are totally in the clear.

suhweeeeet.... Thanks man. All input about this topic very much appreciated.

I'm a fan of the circles of hell and the imagination required to come up with things like that.. No religious affiliation, haha, but all the evil people come up with is interesting to no end. For me anyway.

I read quite a lot. Quite fascinated with Lessor Key of Solomon, etc. Hence my wanting to make some demons.

-off topic but related down below-

Is anything "original" anymore anyway? Everything is taken from something else. I was involved in music for about 5 years...opened up for Cypress Hill at Bogarts, hungout with Bootsy Collins and his brother Catfish a bunch, Exhibit, blah blah blah.... It is IMPOSSIBLE for a NEW drum pattern to be made. Ever wonder why most all 70's rock has same drum patterns, or why most all "rap" music has same patterns........? Can't make an original pattern anymore. Can't make new chords on guitar. Jerry Garcia was a "noodling" master- but guess where he got that from? Django Rheinhardt from the 20's or 30's or whenever.....Nothing is original anymore to me.

Everything is played off some other thing. Even a completely original sculpt still looks like something else you have seen before. Even if it's just resembling a human. Nobody came up with the human form. They just copied what they saw.

And that's my rant after work today! Thank yall for coming....hahaha....

The book is curious indeed. Not because of the religious stuff but exactly cause of the circles and the journey. Im on circle three right now and i gotta say its not the easiest book to read, you really gotta take your time.

But perhaps it gets easier when you get out of the pit haaa!

The public domain stuff is pretty cool. Lots of other things fall into the same category including a good deal of H.P Lovecraft's work which is why cthulhu is seen in everything everywhere.

Hell yeah. I don't add a lot, so never put the two and two together with the Cthulhu. Thanks brothers.
