I'd bet that it was branded on before the material of the figure was fully cooled. There were probably so few of these made that it wouldn't make sense to use a separate mold.

Sorry Fkro6784 but why you say there were so few of these??   The writings on the back of packs talks clear:

"Hidden in one of every 10.000 Matchbox Monster In My Pocket packages, is a secret monster which has a special star branded on it´s back (*) instead of the usual point value."

They just talk about ONE Secret Monster, hidden in one of every 10.000 packages

Oh, I was just going off the fact that after all these years this is the only one that has ever publicly surfaced. I'm not sure how many total packages of MIMP were produced, but even with one Star Monster in every 10,000, that doesn't seem like it would add up to that many.

What really surprises me is that fact that the ad said matchbox would send the trolls back to the winners who sent them in. Makes me think that another is bound to surface on ebay sooner or later. I think that if anyone still has them they might not be aware of their value.

Just my thought but I had been in place of Nik to make a fake I at least tried to make a straight Star...

But as we can see from the pictures it is rather skewed. This did convince me enough of its authenticity

Was just reading the original promo again...

Keep your eyes peeled!
And win a mystery grab bag of Monster In My Pocket toys!
Hidden in one of every 10,000 Matchbox Monster In My Pocket packages, is a secret monster which has a special star branded on it´s back (*) instead of the usual point value. If you capture it, send it to the address below and we´ll return it with your Mystery Grab Bag of Monster In My Pocket toys retail valued at over $50!

Has it ever occured to anyone that perhaps this text is (admittedly somewhat ambiguosly) declaring that only one star monster exists? 10,000 packages (that each include multiple figures of course) could actually be the entire production run of this specific series. I mean you'd think a 1 in 10,000 chance would lend itself a higher prize than $50, but who knows. It would make sense why Nik's is the only one that's ever surfaced (and that was only recently of course).

Of course, if we were talking 10,000 figures, that would be a pretty low production run. But 10,000 packages, each containing multiple figures, that actually sounds like a fairly realistic production run for a single series to me.

Yeah it is definitely not clear how many exist, or if this is the only one. I wonder how many total trolls are out there? Makes me want to build a Jotun army...

10000 packages for a complete worlwide production seems very poor for me. in my opinion, only the 12 packs were concerned. I imagine they were packed in box of between 10 & 24. So each shop who sold them got at least 10 packages. Only in France, there are more than 1000 shops and toyshops. Imagine if you add UK, USA, CA, Deutchland, Italy, Australia, Benelux, South africa etc...

just my opinion...

Yeah, I can't imagine 10,000 packages being the total run. The tooling for 48 different figures would cost a pretty penny that I don't see only producing 10,000 packages leaving enough room for profit.  Plus the games and cartoon tie-ins, would lead me to believe that they were hoping to establish a new mega brand, which would be hard to do with such a small run.

Im not big on mimp but been following this thread and my idea is... well as it said on burtys pic star monster was special edition and it said by sending it back to the company you get 20 free monsters. Haha! It doesnt say they would return the jotun.

Also one per 10 000 pags is not alot.. id rate it as rare as Xar from FoP under thousand jotuns in the us id say.. less in smaller countries.

Not sure how it works with other lines but i used to have these Dual master cards(think they were called that) also that had some sppecial "real looking" cards in cerial boxes, but me and my friends noticed they had mark others didnt and made the conclusion of them being fake and didnt like/use/trade em.

And one more thing i wouldnt have liked my toy having a star on its back as a kid :D

To sum it up: Little were made, some kids sent theirs away, it was thought to be worthess back in the day and perhaps some kids wouldnt have liked the star.

Just my thoughts here not a mimp expert.. hell not even a collector but just wanted to share my ideas on this.

Edit: Last one, if it wasin the last pag of a 10 000 pag order some might havent even make it to the shelfs

I've received the Jotun Troll yesterday in the afternoon and that's a wonderful piece! The star branded on its back doesn't show signs of forgery.
In general the piece seems to be in perfect shape and bright colour with no stains, ink marks, ect.
A beautiful piece! Thanks again Nik
I'll leave a positive feedback for you here on board later.

Sorry about reviving a dead horse but I believe the number was probably 10,000 produced and less than a 10% survival rating (simply because they looked the same as the other trolls).
