Showcase #33: Kinnikuman & Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump

Besides collecting LRG's I also collect vintage Weekly Shonen Jumps from Japan. Four of my favorite mangas are Saint Seiya, Kinnikuman, Sailor Moon & finally Dragonball. Three of those were published on Weekly Shonen Jump originally before making it to collected volumes in manga form.

I wanted to collect the entire published run of Saint Seiya (ran from 1986 to 1990). So the year 1990 became my cut off point for stopping/ending my collection and once I rediscovered Kinnikuman I began tracing back the issues before 1986 and thus began my journey.

I have full runs of the year 1986, 1988, 1989 & 1990 (almost finished collecting the year 1987). But for Kinnikuman I am still 5 years behind! Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada (Yudetamago) originally started Kinnikuman as a parody of Ultraman. They started with two one-shots in 1979 and the stories received such acclaim that Weekly Shonen Jump decided to run the series full time starting in issue #22 (1979).

The series ran until 1987 & this topic will be dedicated to Kinnikuman covers and important Weekly Shonen Jump issues (the ones I own); a little Kinnikuman history! So keep an eye out for updates.

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #2 (1979) 1st One-Shot Special

Childhood friends Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada (Yudetamago) originally started Kinnikuman as a parody of Ultraman. They submitted their first short story to Weekly Shonen Jump and it was published in issue #2 (December 1978 but marked 1979). The cover featured Masami Kurumada's (creator of Saint Seiya) "Ring ni Kakero".

Weekly Shonen Jump always had a stamp mark of the following calendar year for the December issues in particular overlapping to the following calendar year. Making Shonen Jump difficult to collect sometimes because finding a checklist or exact publishing dates/months online is difficult.

It was published weekly and had 52 issues (in theory) but occasionally had double issues etc so the mangas are not actually 52 per year etc.

This was for all intents and purposes the "first appearance" of Kinnikuman and the drawings although crude started it all! This issue is surprisingly not that difficult to find in the wild and its pretty economically priced (I paid less than 7 EUR for my copy).

I purchase my copies either in Japan, yahoojapan or Mandarake and since they weight between 400 to 500 grams they are extremely heavy and shipping is an issue sometimes (except at Mandarake in terms of reasonable shipping prices).

I remember having to ship some copies from Japan last year & using SAL as a shipping option which was economical (Seamail being the cheapest but longest option).

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #14 (1979) 2nd One-Shot Special

Issue #14 (March 1979) was the second one-shot published and it was critically acclaimed. Winning the Akatsuka Award from Shueisha for humor and hilarity!

By this point it was decided that Kinnikuman would become a regular series. On the last page of the story they highlight a "big announcement for issue #15 (which was the announcemnet that it be a regular series).

This issue is also a "sleeper" issue for collectors in terms of people either not really appreciating the historical significance of the Manga or not really being informed about the one-shots.

I paid 250 yen for my copy! It can be found online cheap; so just keep an eye out if you want it in your collection as it is in my opinion Kinnikuman history.

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #22 (1979) Kinnikuman Ch. 1

The first chapter in the Kinnikuman saga! Shonen Jump #22 (May 1979) had Kinnikuman on the cover (sporting a green mask).

Cover spotlights was somewhat customary when Jump debuted new titles/stories.

An awesome piece of Kinnikuman history and this particular Shonen Jump can be found in the wild (I bought mine in Japan at the Shibuya Mandarake branch for 15,000 yen).

My copy was circa $134 bucks, copies are not cheap but on yahoojapan I have seen one for about $90 bucks.

So if you keep an eye out, you might find it for a way better price than me!

In this chapter we see the Ultraman vs Kaiju of the week influences; back then Kinnikuman was in its infancy and would later develop it's storytelling as the years went along.

Ultimately I would like to collect all Weekly Shonen Jump Kinnikuman covers and a full Weekly Shonen Jump run (I have a complete 1986 run and an almost complete 1987 run already).

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #39 (1979) Kinnikuman Ch. 18

The 18th chapter in the Kinnikuman saga! Shonen Jump #39 (September 1979) had both Kinnikuman & Meat on the cover (Kinnikuman sporting a green mask and Meat in yellow).

This was the 3rd and last time Kinnikuman was spotlighted with a cover for the year 1979.

When you opened the Shonen Jump it had some color Kaiju pics! (unrelated to Kinnikuman)...Plus a really cool first page splash to open up Chapter 18:

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #52 (1985) First appearance of Seiya (from Saint Seiya)

Besides collecting the printed run of Kinnikuman, I also collect the series/manga Saint Seiya in Japanese (I only collect this from the series since the world of the toys from Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiacin the U.S) is quite big and expensive).

As we all know, one of the most popular and famous weekly publications in Japan is Weekly Shōnen Jump. Many famous manga and animes have their start here (Dragonball for example).

It was the same for Saint Seiya, my goal is to have the complete printed run of the original series (the series was published from 1986 to 1990).

This issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump #52 (December 1985) was special because it marks the first appearance of Seiya in Manga form (technically).

It was in the last two pages of the issue and it was the announcement that the series would make its debut in the next installment of Shonen Jump #1-2 1986 (each year consisted of 52 copies and they started again from number 1 at the beginning of each year).

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump #01-02 (1986) First chapter from Saint Seiya

This was my holy grail for a long time until I bought it in 2013 (before the first appearance of Kinnikuman). Before I discovered yahoojapan and visited Japan, I mostly bought things on ebay.

I found my first copy of Weekly Shōnen Jump #01/02 on ebay (I ended up paying way too much for the copy).

Then I found the entire 1986 print run on sale on yahoojapan!

This is how I got my second copy of #01-02, I had the issues shipped in 3 different boxes because of the weight and shipped by boat (that was the cheapest shipping method to Germany!)

When you open the first page, the first chapter of Saint Seiya starts in color! Weekly Shonen Jump was published with really cheap paper but every issue had some color pages (besides the cover) and posters.

So some Kinnikuman chapters had color spreads in better quality paper.

This is an awesome topic! Please showcase more of your collection! I want to learn more!

when I was in Japan, I picked up the (then current) issues of the magazine, for the weeks I was there. I believe I will continue the tradition on any subsequent trips I may make.

I also visited Otona no Jump Sakaba.
