So, if he's called Geronimo, that means who ever plays him shouldn't do that Ringo Starr crap, right?

Oh, and by the way. Akaiwa is actually called Gobugari in the anime... and that's Kinkotsuman's great-grandmother, not his mother.

Right. He's a "Native American" indian. Or, to make it somewhat clearer in one word, and "Injun."

What's the deal with Akaiwa? He appears quite often in the anime with Skullduggery and Rocky Slab, but the latter two seem to be criminals, and he a police officer.

And I'm quite glad we've got you around-- We would've not known that the old skeletal woman wasn't Skullduggery's mother if not for you. Thanks!

Also, what's wrong with the name "Skullduggery?" The definition of "Skullduggery" is "dishonorable proceedings; mean dishonesty or trickery: bribery, graft; 2. an instance of dishonest or deceitful behavior; trick" Seems to fit the character just as well as "Bone and Tendons Man," and I support the removal of the '________ Man' kinnikustereotype for some of the more minor and less interesting characters that don't have much to go on apart from their name.

Granted, "Rocky Slab" for Iwao might not be perfect, but what does "Iwao" mean?

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

What's the deal with Akaiwa?  He appears quite often in the anime with Skullduggery and Rocky Slab, but the latter two seem to be criminals, and he a police officer.

Detective Gobugari (or Akaiwa, as he is called in his 2 manga appearances) is a Josai police detective who likes to shoot his gun (though I don't believe he likes all of our pretty songs nor does he like to sing along). I haven't seen much of the original anime and even less of Kinkotsuman (which is unfortunate 'cuz A: I love Kinkotsuman, and B: I love his voice actor Futamata Issei), but from what I've gathered, Gobugari is always either pursuing them or escorting them to prison, and that seems to be how they keep Kinkotsuman and Iwao in the storyline after the American Tour.

My main objection to any of the name changes is... "That's not they're name". I don't see it as necessary at all to change any of their names, and I'm pretty sure I never will. My other objection (in the case of Kinkotsuman) is that it takes away from the joke reason that he and Kinnikuman are bitter enemies: Muscleman vs. Bone and Tendons Man!! They are opposites therefor arch enemies... it's a joke. I also just think Skullduggery (as well as Vance McMadd, Doc Nakano, and Mac Metaphor) sounds completely lame and stupid... but that's just me.

Granted, "Rocky Slab" for Iwao might not be perfect, but what does "Iwao" mean?

Although, of course, I more than anything want his name to stay Iwao, calling him "Rocky" or "Slab" (but not both) won't bother me as much as the others. This is because (and to answer yer question) "iwa" means "rock" and "-o" is a common name ending for men... so technically, his name is already "Rocky", just the Japanese version of it.

But I repeat... I would still rather he be called Iwao...

I'd prefer to keep the last name of "Slab." I think its a Discworld reference; Rocky's appearance of a mobile rock is identical to the Discworld Troll race, though he'd be a midget in that respect, as he's four feet high instead of twelve. Mr. Slab is a character from the Discworld.

I think "Rocky Slab" would be the same as "Terry Kenyon." First name, Last name.

Iwao has no last name in the original so why give him one? Also, "Terry Kenyon", "Kid Muscle", "Wally Tusket", and "Dik Dik Van Dik" are all (in my opinion) extremely lame and stupid names... but we were talkin' about G1 so I didn't list them earlier.

I think that we should stay with original names, not just becuase their better(Cranky Doodle Crawdaddy?),but, many characters in the movie don't appear in UM,hence,no us name. It's gonna be easier for Soop to stick with one set of names anyway.

Fair enough.

You dislike the UM names. Some people don't mind, or even like them.

Opinions are like :o . Everyone's got 'em, and everyone wants to have the best one.

Ok 1st off, Chyojin Showtime I completely understand your point of view on this and with most anime I prefer the original names/descriptions. But as far as this dub goes I think we may have to stick to the dub/UM style names for the most part.

Reason being is we're all (for the most part) English speakers making an English language dub. We are not going to have Professional Voice Actors involved here and even if we did MOST of, if not all of these characters' names would be HORRIBLY mis-pronounced("NAAH-roo-TOE!" anyone?). I speak fluent Italian, Spanish and English and even I can't pronounce half of these names correctly. I get toungue tied trying to say "Kinkotsuman and Iwao will defeat you, Suguru Kinnikuman!!"(Try saying THAT 3 times fast ^^) I think that 90% of our VA's will have the same problem.

Although, since this is OUR baby here we can change/modify whatever we want. I know the source material well enough to make 2 different scripts. One that stays 100% true to the JP release (sutable for subtitling) and one for our VA's. One that can actual be read aloud by different people w/ varying degrees of acting/speaking experience ^^. I can tell you guys now the biggest dificulty for me right now is getting the direct Japanese to English translation to actually be "reader friendly" it's gonna take even more work to get it "actor friendly".

Also, I have NO problem going with Geronimo over Beetlebomb. Small changes like that or no biggy since its an easily pronounced English name anyway. We can vote on these sort of things. I personaly prefer Geronimo>Beetlebomb, Rikishiman>Sosumi and Akuma Shogun>Rogue Shogun. But on the same token I prefer Maria>Marisan, Skullduggery>Kinkotsuman, Slab>Iwao. In other words we'll all be happy as long as these changes are made within reason or have enough demand to back it up. :o

Off topic Rant (sort of): You dont have to LOVE the name but really, you must have fried a humor-circuit at some point if you think "Gazelle Man" is a funnier name than "Dik Dik Van Dik".

I can help with absolutely any pronounciation problems... honestly... (what's so hard about "Mari", anyway? If you can say "Mario", you can say "Mari")

And no, I haven't blown a "humor-circuit". In fact, I tend to not like things that get too serious, like dragons, cancer, and not strangeling mailboxes. And when did I say i prefered "Gazelleman" because I thought it sounded funnier? Hmmm? When, oh when, my friend? Where were you on the night of June 13th? Where was I? Are you and I in cahoots? Who's are target? What is Ricky Steamboat hiding? Where is Don Patchi taking Lum? Why dosen't Frank Zappa return my calls!!!!!???............

See... (I'd use smilies more often so people can tell when I'm joking, but I hate those damn things)

My ONLY... I repeat, ONLY objection to the name changes are... "That's not their names"! Their names were perfectly fine in the original, and that's all there is to it with me.

My only other objections to the UM dub are too many "clever" puns and jokes, additional dialogue when no one is speaking, and those horrid (in my opinion) voices that insult so many of my favorite Japanese voice actors who did a superb job as their characters in the original version (*sniff* Poor Morikawa, Okiayu, and Onosaka).

But, again, I don't actually think anybody will take what I'm saying into consideration when the dub is being made and what not. I'm just at least giving my 10 yen on the subject.

Good coz we'll need all the help we can get. Especially for the incidentals like name differences between the Anime and the Manga.

Here's one for you: Is there a guy in the anime named The Great Ukon? Or is it Great Udon? The way it's written in my translation I can't really tell witch is the REAL name of the guy. >_<

Akaiwa is actually called Gobugari in the anime... and that's Kinkotsuman's great-grandmother, not his mother.

See, that was helpful my translation says it's Kinkotsuman's Mother. I'm aware of the Manga/Anime differances on Rikishiman/Wolfman but on smaller characters like "Great Grandma" I wouldn't have the time to verify if its right or wrong so I'd leave that sort of correction to you guys. Same deal with Akaiwa/Gobugari I didnt know there was a difference.

honestly... (what's so hard about "Mari", anyway? If you can say "Mario", you can say "Mari")

Mari isn't a huge leap for a native english speaker just like Geronimo/Beetlbomb isn't. But for example Kinkotsuman or Yoshigai, both strikingly Japanese names, are whole heck of a lot tougher to pronounce in a completely english sentence than Skullduggery or Mac would be. If you can convince the actors otherwise(by helping w/ the names, etc.) go for it, I personally don't mind either way. Or rather they'll let US know which they prefer/find easier to work with once they attempt a read.

Off Topic Again:

And when did I say i prefered "Gazelleman" because I thought it sounded funnier? Hmmm? When, oh when, my friend?.......

Then you don't prefer "Gazelleman" is what your saying? Coz' your earlier posts would lead me to believe that you find (in your opinion) those UM dubbed names including Dik Dik's "extremely lame and stupid"and I guess therefore not funny/funnier than the originals. And since this is the only board where I get to use them.--> :o <--

No, no, no, that's not it at all...

As Don Patchi (whom, by the way, shares Mantarou's Japanese VA) will kindly explain to you, I prefer the name "Gazelleman" because it's his original name... not because I find it funnier in the least bit. In fact, he doesn't need a funny name, in my opinion. He's funny enough as is (what with being a valedictorian with a humongous losing streak and all). But then again, what with me not being in Jr. High anymore, jokes like "hee hee... he said 'Dik Dik'... hee hee" aren't exactly splitting my sides anymore. In no way AT ALL am I insulting anyone who finds it funny. It's just, I discovered Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman Nisei after I had already finished high school and had "graduated" to political humor and Woody Allen. Thank you for yer help Don Patchi...

Don Patchi: B... but I didn't do any...

Showtime: DIE!!

Don Patchi: WAAAH!!!

Anywho... on to other stuff...

Here's one for you: Is there a guy in the anime named The Great Ukon? Or is it Great Udon? The way it's written in my translation I can't really tell witch is the REAL name of the guy. >_<

There are a bunch of Ukon's in the anime. There is Ukon (who also appears early in the manga), Black Great Ukon, Ukon Jr., Ukonnosuke, Ukon Inspector, and Great Ukon the 2nd. Now, except for the TV special about Planet Rakka and the first Nisei movie, I haven't seen any of the Kinnikuman movies. So I don't really know anything about these guys other than the one who is also in the manga (and they might be different characters).

And that's all for now... tune in for the next wacky episode of "Annoyingly Dedicated Anime Fan" where Showtime will launch snot rockets at Ranma 1/2 fans who won't shut up about how bad a father Genma is and instead just find him funny!!

Lighten up, friend. Try to appreciate the inuendo and bathroom humor that this series offers a bit more. I prefer, the Dik Dik name itself more for it's comedic shock value.

Example#1 "Gazelleman":
Me: "Here's my favorite wrestler, Gazelleman!"
AnonStranger:"Ah,yes that's very nice."

Example#2 "Dik Dik Van Dik":
Me: "Here's my favorite wrestler, Dik Dik Van Dik!"
AnonStranger: "........what?"

See? Now you can tell "AnonStranger" about his being the best in the class yet a failure in the ring and they'll REALLY hear ya'. Then you get to explain to them that a dikdik is a type of antelope and that THEY have a dirty mind if they though otherwise. :p One of the golden rules of comedy: (and fishing incidently) Use your best hook, then reel 'em in.

/Back on Topic:

Okay, so there's a full on Ukon Family. Then this guys name is "Detective Ukon" the ancestor of the Great Ukon. Good, good, duely noted.

The Response, a very very short story by Idol Choujin Showtime

Non-exsistent Foreward by Don Patchi

Imaginary Bongos by Kinkotsuman and Iwao

I have absolutely no problem with unit and fart jokes. It's the fact that (hear we go again) it's NOT his real name that bothers me. It'll always bother me. Just like Kid Muscle, Terry "The Grand" Kenyon, and Wally Tusket will always bother me. Just like Joe Saeba, Jimmy Kudo, Richard Moore, Rachel Moore, Harley Hartwell, Krillin, Tien, Hercule, Korin, HFIL, Zolo, Trace (what was so bad about Ace!?), Joey Wheeler, Tea Gardner, Tristan Taylor, Jelly Jiggler, Gasser, Captain Battleship, Derek Wildstar, Nova, Mark Venture, Captain Avatar, Sandor, IQ-9, Dr. Sane, Orion, Homer Glitchman, Conroy, The Argo, Speed Racer....... Well, you get the point....

So, to summarize, though I prefer it when people make intelligent jokes and humorous situations instead of going for the cheap laugh with bathroom humor... I still laugh... when it's actually funny. But, since this name exists because of something I am very strongly against (censorship, ethnic cleansing, globalization, call it what you will), I'm just never gonna smile when I hear or read that name. That's just who I am. Sorry...

Now, if I recall, this topic is about the dub, so let's get back to talking about that. And then later, we can all go out together and kill Don Patchi... my treat...

Don Patchi: (wielding a Hattori Hanzou blade) I heard that!! DIE!!

Showtime: (wielding a single chopstick) NO, YOU DIE!!

Don Patchi: WAAAH!!!

That's all for now...

They're so....dainty-looking. XD Now I understand that they actually did reasearch in giving Gazelleman that name (I thought it was just making fun of him, though that may be part of it too. T_T)

I'm afraid I'll have to dissapoint you, but it seems that Yoshio Sawai (and to a small point, me) seems to acknowledge/like the name Jelly Jiggler for Tokoro Tennosuke as seen here in a Shinsetsu Bo-bobo title page. (Colouring courtesy of me).

But yeah, I myself usually prefer the use of original names, it sometimes based on which ones you're used to (like how I'm used to the few English names for the Adventures of TinTin (a popular Franco-Belgic Comic)), so yeah.

Well, to me what it seems he acknowledges it as is a translation for just "Tokoro" (I'm sure you did, but notice how it says Tennosuke underneath).

I can't believe you guys didn't know Dik Diks were real. XD They're so tiny and have crazy hair! My friend said they look like super sayians. (My friends cracked up when they first heard his name too. "Dik Dik Van Dik? WTH!")

*prefers the Nisei dub names as well* I mean.. Jade is so girly. Jeager's so German. It's beefy. Just like him.

Anyway, if Yudetamago or SHUIESHA had a problem with the name changes, I'm sure they'd inform 4Kids. Besides, Yudetamago seems to love really weirdnames and puns.. so I think the dub names fit.

</rant>

.. Listening to everyone's auditions is making me wanna try out. XD *so shy!*

Actually, Jade is a pretty good name for him in my opinion; girly as it may sound as a name, the jade gemstone:

- is known for its toughness (why it was used in ancient times)
- is a symbol of the good, beautiful and precious
- embodies wisdom, justice, compassion, modesty, and courage

Sounds right to me; well, maybe not the wisdom part, but maybe that comes later.... XD; *turns off gem-geek mode*

I really don't have major preference between dubs or subs in regards to names, they're both good in thier own ways. I do kinda prefer the name Wally Tusket, only because I CANNOT spell his japanese name!

C'mon Knuxie, I tried out and I HATE recording my voice! Do I have to bribe you? :D

@ Theorgg

The only problem with that is Meat himself behaves more like a child in these films. He uses the children's playground dresses like a kid and plays with other kids as though he is one of them.
We dont have to be 100% faithful on our dub though so if some one can do a great read for meat than I don't care if he sounds like young Meat or older Meat.
I'll leave that interperatation wide open.
Right now I'm working on getting some lines translated for the static cast members of both films. That way those auditioning have something to work from.

Can I play as Meat?
