For what it was I thought it was a lot of fun, a popcorn movie done well. It bothered to create some cool texture for its world, the monsters were interesting and even made had a decent explanation, and they did something different and psychological with the mecha. It also contains a man named Marshal Pentecost in it.
On the other hand, it stumbled at the end. I don't want to spoil anything, but it was hard to buy all of that working out how it did, even from that movie.

I think if maybe there had been better chemistry between actors it might have been a bit better - but man those creature designs were awesome. But yeah, I went in expecting a silly over the top popcorn flick - and got what I expected. If only I could have convinced my wife to watch it with me lol...
I think she would have enjoyed it. PLUS, she supposedly likes Del Toro's other films...
